"In the name of the Father, the son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen." He clasped his hands and stared up at the cross. Thomas did his fair share of celebrating and making his presence known at the Christmastide events, as his station as adviser to the king dictated. Now that he had some time to spare, he chose to spend it in reflection and prayer. "Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among mothers and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and in the hour of our death, Amen."

He continued to stare at the cross. In this time of the birth of our Savior, I ask you, Lord, for people to remember what we are truly celebrating. I offer my prayers to those during this time, that they are blessed during this time. Most of all, I pray for You, Almighty God, to defend and watch over the King's Majesty. For he has been chosen by you to watch over and defend this great country of England. May he stand strong in the face of the adversities and trials he shall face. Amen.

Then, and only then, did he allow himself up off his knees and into the relative comfort the pew behind him provided. Candles and torches were on the walls around the perimeter of the church, cutting through the darkness and giving the interior a soft, almost ethereal glow. Besides his home on the river Chelsea, this was the one place that gave him peace and comfort when he had to be at home and away from his family. So many things to think about, and to praise God for: the Earl of Wilmington had wed, Harry had escaped certain death at the hands of one who wished to do him harm, and his children were in good health. What more was there to ask?

"God is good," he said, aloud, and a small smile played at his lips.

Religion was not Cecily's area of knowledge. Her father spoke very highly of this man named Jesus. As a child, even an infant, her father told her bible stories that he heard in church. She believed in heaven and hell. She believed there was a place souls could go. But she never fully understood prayer and God in all of his holy light because she could not read. The bible was another book. Another bundle of paper with symbols that laughed at her.

But she was in a religious mood today...a hopeful mood although her life felt hopeless. Her fathers debt with Miles Umbridge the spiteful baron was still swelling at the seams. Her time at the castle helped but she was looking at working here a whole lot longer. With the note from her father crumbled in her hand, she sat a couple of pews behind Thomas as he prayed. She watched him with interest at his focused and serene expression. The man was very in tune and it made her stare. Her long red hair fell out of her emerald green cloaks hood and over her shoulders. She dressed in her nice brown gown for the chapel but her cloak covered her. As Thomas stood up she did too. «Does he ever answer back?» she straight out asked. Praying was new to her. She went to church only a few times in her life. She lived n the country and only prayed at night. It was a prayer she made up anew every night almost for fun. If God was prayed to by everyone all the time she thouht he would apperciate her spicing it up some.

But Thomas looked like he had a relationship with God. Maybe he had more luck getting the holy mans attention.

He didn't even notice the young woman that had come into the church, so focused was he on his prayer and his thoughts. It was fortunate, however, that he heard the woman's question. "Does he answer back?" Thomas looked at her, with wonderment written on his face. "God answers us and speaks to all of us, though not always in the way we expect."

It amazed him, still, how many people did not understand the comfort the Lord could provide, or the power of prayer. "The small, still voice you hear, that is the Holy Spirit speaking to you, empowering you, telling you in which direction you are supposed to go." Thomas gave her a small smile. "I am Sir Thomas More. Who might you be, and what is the reason you come here today, besides finding comfort in prayer?"

His reply disappointed her, but still his words were pretty. It was a much more poetic answer than she though she was going to receive. But it did confuse her. What little voice? Like her own inside her head. Her eldest brother had always told her that it was instinct, that voice that sometimes wasn't even a voice but a urge. He told her this to help her fish better, but she applied it to all her tasks.

But that voice was her own, she knew that because she would follow it and she always ended up getting screwed.

She put on a smile though, very good at hiding her emotions. It was something she had to be an expert at around certain spoiled individuals she has to deal with in the castle. "Cecily, sir." she said to him almost mechanically and did her normal servant bow. It was a sentence and a motion that she had done a thousand times a day.

"Homesick. was all she said as an answer to his second question. She did not want to speak about her fathers letter or her problems. Thomas More looked like a peaceful man, a settled man. Who was she to disturb his peace?

"What you said, did you get that from the bible?" she asked him curiously. His words sounded like it was something she could hear from the bible.
