The year 1493 held promise for the family of Devereux, the security of an heir growing safely in the womb of the 8th Baron Ferrers of Chartley, John Devereux’s wife, Cecille Bourchier, or rather, Cecille Devereux. The two had been married young and naive and already had their little Walter running about the skirts of his tormented nursemaids, but the boy was hazardous to sickness at such a young age and although it might shatter their hearts to lose the plump child who seemed as if so full of life, it was a concept and a danger that could not be ignored. However, as the months drew on and Cecille was compelled into labor, the household was brought into confusion as a healthy Devereux daughter was born. Most would have merely shrugged their shoulders in a nonchalant manner with the excuse of John and Cecille Devereux being young and still within the range of bearing children, and that there were many political benefits of bearing a daughter. Unfortunately, the year that seemed as if blossoming of promise twisted into a deformed threat of malevolence. After the birth of their daughter, a girl whom was named Rebecca, it appeared that the Baroness Ferrers of Chartley would be stricken with the difficulties of her daughter’s birth and as the night drew into the early hours of the morning, Cecille Devereux surrendered her life to the Holy Father. The blow, of course, had been – in its own sense- fatal to Rebecca’s father. The man whom had been known for his kindness and for his dedication toward his family faded from existence and instead left a bitter and violent remnant of himself to walk, speak, and act on his behalf.

Because of this, Rebecca Devereux grew to be almost estranged under the scrutiny of her father. She was, of course, the thing that had wrenched the life away from his beloved Cecille, and would always remain responsible for that, even when concealed underneath the innocence of youth. Walter, John’s first child and son, would forever be the light of the Baron Ferrers of Chartley’s life; for as far as the Baron was concerned, his daughter was of no use to him, and he sought naught to recognize her as consequential. Despite his self proclaimed distaste, John Devereux dubbed himself generous, and did not forget his daughter, but instead her to be educated … more so for his own benefit than for hers. Her education was nothing of great length, and instead dwelled in the aspect of a woman’s necessities, consisting of a wide array of subjects but curbed to what was suitable and that would prove her an adequate addition once within her own household. Rebecca, of course, grew up with the ambition for the very affections she seemed as if starved of. And in result, her dedication and perseverance mirrored that of her late Lady Mother, and the Lady Devereux grew to excel in her studies. As she learned and grew, Rebecca proved to be a child that was the epitome of everything her father thought she was not. Good, kind, gentle, and ever so obedient. It was not until the year of 1506 that the more inconspicuous traits that proved her father correct decided to push through the surface and land upon her exterior and alter her into an almost entirely different person.

With Rebecca’s previous perspective curtained underneath her obliviousness and her naivety, the Lady Devereux slowly formed within her own mind that the death of her mother was not a thing of her own fault, rather of her father’s: due to his own participation in Cecille’s conceiving. What Rebecca saw, was a man whom found himself guilty, and instead of accepting a fact so blatantly obvious and that Cecille’s death was the mutual fault of many events that led her to her fate, instead he had blamed the only single other he could, and in result had brought a great injustice toward his daughter. It was then, at the age of twelve, that Lady Devereux brewed great feelings of hate toward her parent, and her thoughts were ever shaded in the essence of the very malevolence that overshadowed the year of her birth. Rebecca’s judgment could not at all be deterred, and very soon after the acceptance she so sought from her father reverted into that of rebellion against her parent, and eventually was the very thing that consumed her thoughts. Lady Devereux made a silent vow to herself to, one day bring forth great regret to the Baron Ferrers of Chartley, and to beckon forth a pride that was almost identical to that bestowed upon her dear, dear brother.

Although, in the azure eyes of Rebecca, Walter was always regarded in a conflicted view; a view that seemed as if brimming of both love and envy. It wasn’t until the ripe age of fourteen, that the two began to grow closer together. It had started simply enough with the exchanges of information; Walter with his theories and Rebecca with her own knowledge of certain behavior conveyed by the young women of court. It was a matter that bound the two of them together in bonds unburdened by the shifting affections of their notorious father whom spent most of his time within the Court of Hampton. Fortunately for Rebecca, as her opinion of her father changed and Walter’s affections grew for his younger sibling, her brother grew to understand her logic, and his opinion followed thereafter.

During her years of adolescence, years that were rather known for their impressionable nature, Rebecca grew possessive over her brother, and as Walter introduced her to his extensive handful of friends and acquaintances, the Lady Devereux took habit of growing similar affections over the other men whom shed their attentions upon her. Although such a habit was only ever temporarily, and was usually short winded before her own irrationality discarded her interest and Rebecca sought entertainment elsewhere.

Over time, the personalities of Walter and Rebecca Devereux grew to be rather malicious. Due to Walter’s own ambitions and his influence upon his sister, Rebecca’s hope to grow higher followed in suit with her elder brother. The Lady Devereux was not deluded, despite the hate that grew in her heart, Rebecca was quite aware that her place was below that of a man. For a woman was but a woman, and would forever be in subjection to that of God and those whom were chosen to be privileged of his creation. But that did not cease all action toward her brother’s elevation, and was she not being obedient in the sense of her loyalty toward Walter? The benefit of such was for her own rise to flow along with it, and to bring forth that very regret her father deserved, and that she had vowed to put in place. Rebecca’s tongue grew sharper, her nature stubborn, and her heart far less forgiving. She was a woman vile, but a woman whom knew her place and it was not difficult, of course, to grow a façade of something demure, soft, and ever friendly. To fool those who observed her, and to earn the hearts of men who might aid Walter’s rise in power.

Considering her as an adult, at the eager age of sixteen, Rebecca Devereux accompanied her brother and father to the King’s Court. In accordance with John Devereux’s thinking, his daughter was a woman to be married off, and although she had provided very little benefit and was only a reminder of the foul thing whom had taken his dear Cecille, the Baron Ferrers of Chartley sought only to bind her in a union and to be rid of her. Although Walter saw great misfortune in such a thing, there was also the benefit of political gain, and Rebecca, of course, was not at all short of willing to aid her brother in his search for higher power. For would there not be her own advantages in such a thing?

Despite the prospect, the Lady Devereux’s eagerness seemed to come forth short, and in the most fortunate of senses, Rebecca’s marital union became as if a discarded afterthought as a woman named Elizabeth Langham came forth into the life of John Devereux. A comely woman whom knew her place and bore a kind heart, and who was as every bit as timid as a child should have been. To whisk away the bitter heart of Rebecca’s father seemed as if an effortless activity and the Lady Devereux was reminded as to how pathetic her father was in comparison with her brother. Rebecca was no one to question his union, and although her rejection of the woman was evident in her own heart, the new marriage proved to be of great distraction to the Baron, and his resentment for his daughter seemed forgotten.

In the years that followed the birth of John and Elizabeth Devereux’s new son, Rebecca’s newly recovered freedom brought forth great advantage to her older brother whom seemed as if busting at the seams with his plans. Surely Walter, with his sister who seemed so willing to support his venture for power and whom bore the ability, if carefully guarded by his hand, to achieve it, was a force unbeatable. It was only a matter of time before the opportunity he so desperately sought for was within an arm’s length, and finally Rebecca would be proven correct.
