Born in France, this man has always been French at heart. He loved the country, the people, the style, the food, but most of all he loved the language. It didn’t matter if someone was cursing you or in a rage, the language would and always will be a beautiful language. Poetry, especially was Philibert’s favourite, put a beautiful language and a beautiful style of writing together and it was Heaven, surely a woman would be aroused just at the sound of it. Though Philibert was never such a man to waste his language on whores; he had a strict father and studied hard. He was a man of God and a Nun was the only woman he could find comfort in. If sex wasn’t a sin, the whole of the convent would be his lovers. His mother died birthing him and so he was the only child for his father, until of course his father went and remarried. Philibert ignored whatever half siblings were brought forth from that whore, she was always under the influence of wine and Philibert suspected none of his younger siblings were related to him.

He spent much of his first twenty years surrounded by his religion. He prayed to his God often and at one point wanted to become a priest himself. He was turned down though, and told to go take a good little wife who would give him children. A wife was the last thing he wanted. God was his Father as the Mother Mary was his mother; he could not turn his back on them. So instead he followed his feet. His feet took him to the French court and a whole new world opened up for him. A lover of God and poetry, he found the soldiers curiously interesting. He studied them and the rest of the courtiers as if they were the actors in a play and he was there to review them.

He started having spy like tendencies, quiet (which was easy for him if took a vow of silence in the name of God), demeaning, always watching, always listening. He tried to learn all that court allowed him to learn. Politics, war…especially war. Why such a Catholic man could love a thing such as war was hard to believe…well he didn’t love war, but the tactics, the training. How could France win a war if some of their soldiers were lazy? A silly notion yes, but to Philibert’s eyes, they were. He wanted to learn with them, train them even, to become an uncontrollable force. Because truly a man faithful to his God knew obedience, he taught those who would follow him, advised them in God’s teachings and made them better men. He was ruthless and strict like his father was to him, no, he was not a drunken fool like his father had been because he hated Philibert for the loss of his wife, but that is what compelled Philibert to be a greater man. Philibert had never believed his mother’s death was his fault, he believed his father wasn’t a stronger man to care for her. It was her poetry books that he read and in remembrance of her he followed God and prayed to the Mother Mary to keep his mother safe.

His lucky break came when a certain Henry Tudor came to French shores. Civil war was raging within the lands of England and this bemused Philibert, especially when Henry himself wanted Philibert’s aid in taking over the English throne. With his own followers in tow and after months of gathering forces to aid them, Philibert stepped onto English soil for the first time. He fast became to hate England, their English was disgusting, as disgusting as the filth on the bottom of his boots as he marched onwards with the massive force behind Henry Tudor. Henry was so impressed by Philibert and his men that when they prevailed and that diadem was placed on Henry’s crown, Philibert was then known as the 1st Earl of Bath and was soon knighted. It was an award well earned, for Philibert was badly injured in battle and barely made it out alive. He had the normal scars that came with battle, but now he would forever walk with a limp. It worried Philibert, not, he was more concerned that with this Earldom he would have to stay in England longer than he would have liked.

Some might have called him careless, but Philibert always hated his family, more importantly his half-siblings. The only ‘half-brother’ who had travelled with him to England had already been killed by Philibert’s own hand, some may have called it mercy for there was no coming back from said injuries, but Philibert had taken pleasure in ending his life, worthless it had been. He cared not that his father was upset with him for letting the boy die, for he was the oldest son of that that whore who was his Step-mother. Naturally, the moment they heard Philibert was now an Earl, they wrote to him asking for money, with three half-sisters and a young half-brother, money was scarce. Philibert cut them off though, he had never seen them as family and far as he was concerned, they were all dead to him. His father died from illness soon after that, but he cared not. Straight to Hell that man had gone, he was sure of it.

Philibert did stay in England for a couple of years, continuing to support the new King of England, and getting used to running his own estates from Somerset and Dorset. During those years he became fond of hawking, and even the piano. A beautiful instrument it was, just like his beloved poetry and French language. Though, if anyone implied that such things were too feminine for a man of war, they would be dead by morning (depending on who they were), thus proving them otherwise. Irony it was that they were no longer alive to learn from their mistake.

His home country called to him though and he missed it terribly. So, he returned to France and he stayed there much of his life until he was an old man. There of course had been a few visits to England if the King had need of him; most of these though were the King attempting to insist his friend to take a wife. The last time Philibert had visited England was the day of the King’s funeral. Now there was no need of him, he might have stayed to assist Henry’s heirs in becoming a good King as their father was, but the new court bored him. In jest, Henry had made Philibert promise to find a wife when he was gone, because surely there needed to be more men such as them? But what if Henry hadn’t been jesting, Philibert knew Henry was disappointed that Philibert had no son to carry on his name. “Do not waste it, my friend, do not waste it.”

Philibert carried those words for years to come. He went back to his watching, but he disliked many of the French women on offer. And then the Boleyns arrived. They reminded him that English women were different than the French, he had half the mind to steal one of the Boleyn sisters as his wife, but he watched as the French court corrupted them. And of course he would have to deal with Norfolk, Norfolk’s kin had been against Henry, and though the current Duke had nothing to do with it, Philibert wasn’t fond of the man in the least. And so it was decided that perhaps he would have to return to England and find a young maiden who couldn’t be corrupted so easily. One French woman though had come to mind as a potential wife, she was young and sweet and a Spencer. It was a good bloodline, and they at least understood the love for his beloved country. The young Elizabeth was taken from him though, travelled to England she did to be with her brother, this disappointed him, for now he had no choice but to travel to the dreaded country.

He hated what Henry’s heir was doing to the country and to think he had the gall to invade France! War had postponed Philibert’s plans to return to England, and he could do nothing about it. He was furious with the boy, spitting on those who supported his father in gaining the throne he now sat on. Philibert would have much liked to take the boy and give him a whipping. But the boy was the King of England now and there would have been consequences, and so not to lose his head or his lands, Philibert did what he did best, sat back and watched. When France lost, Philibert was furious, he would have liked to cut all ties from England for good, but then there was a matter of an alliance. Now was the right time to travel to England to support France’s heir, perhaps Louie even thought Philibert could protect the boy, with the connections he had. But Philibert was there for his own reasons. It had been a while since he had last visited his estates. Perhaps now he could strike a deal with Wilmington for his sister’s hand in marriage, or perhaps there would be another special lady who would catch Philibert’s eye. Time was running out for him now, 50 years he had been of the living and it was time to keep to his promise to a friend. So, Philibert de Chandee, the Earl of Bath had arrived on English shores to find a wife.
