It had been a year since Anne’s husband had caught her with a man, but John had dealt them both before anything could happen. But nothing had changed since then, Anne still flirted and John still had his mistresses. They still hated one another, but there was nothing that a quick sex session couldn’t fix. After that night, Anne realised how much anger could be used to make sex…better. Not that it needed to with a lover like John Shilston. Anne actually was reaping in the rewards with him seeing other women, it was like practise with him and then he could show his dear wife, upset with her or not, just what he could do with those skills. There was still tension between them no whenever John did find his way back to his wife, five years and Anne was still not with child. It was the only duty she was meant to bring to this marriage and she was failing. That night she had accused him being the problem, because what she had said was true…not one of his mistresses (as far as she could tell) was pregnant, so surely it wasn’t completely all her fault?

So she had taken this year to think…she remembered that as a young maiden when her husband showed her for the first time what pleasure was, she hadn’t wanted children so that she could selfishly sin with her husband in every which way he wanted her. But in time she began to learn that her husband wasn’t as nice as she once thought and the only thing that would make her happy in this marriage was if she were to have a child, even just one. For that to happen, she would have to confess her sins and find God and maybe, just maybe she would be rewarded with children, because God she wanted them. For now, she had to make do with what she had a husband who seemed to have a need to taste whatever was between a woman’s legs…and he had to taste them all. She had lived with this for years (though it had taken her a little while to realise it), and besides it meant he was busy while she attempted to find God. But the more she began to change and flirt less, the more she began to fall madly in love with her husband, despite his sinful ways. And it made it hard for her to ignore that he did not love her back…and paid little attention to her.

While he kept her silent with his fists and disappointed looks, she took a step back and became the obedient little wife she should have been the moment they married. She continued to ignore his mistresses, however much she wished he could give them up, maybe he needed to change and confess his sins along with her. But that would never happen, so Anne would just have to pray on his behalf. It was difficult though with the friends she kept, the very same friends who had dared her to feel up a young William Spencer so they could confirm a rumour. And now that the truth was out, it wouldn’t be surprising if the rumour spread with more vigour, at least amongst the ladies; it probably made Dorchester’s womanising easier with the ladies gossiping about him.

Anne was with these said friends now, until her delightful husband came to find him. What did he just say, she was needed to babysit Francis Bryan’s sister so they could go out drinking? What was wrong with the wine and ale at court? Anne didn’t need to ask questions, she relented and nodded. Surprised though that he would give her a quick kiss on the lips when she knew very well where he was going, he was just thirsty for a tavern’s ale, but the women they had to offer as well. And before Anne knew it, despite the teasing words from her friends about being some child carer, John’s friend Francis Bryan appeared with his little sister in tow. It wouldn’t matter if Anne tried to object, because the men were gone before she could say another word.

She sighed softly and gave Elizabeth a small smile. “Elizabeth…these are my friends…Mistress Martha Valentine and her sister Mistress Alice, and Mistress Rachel Cooper and Mistress Jane Macleod.” She nodded to each of her friends as she introduced them, a blond who was leader of the group, her younger sister a brunette, Rachel with dark locks and Jane another blond who looked up to Martha like an obedient little slave. “And this is Sir Francis Bryan’s sister…Elizabeth.” Once the pleasantries were over, Jane giggled and suggested. “We were just talking about what Anne did to the Lord Dorchester, William Spencer, have you heard of him…or at least have you heard of the rumour?” Anne’s eyes went wide and covered Jane’s mouth, whispering sternly. “No Jane, she doesn’t need to know…” Uneasy now, Anne’s eyes slid Elizabeth’s way, smiling nervously. “Maybe you would like to turn in, it’s getting late, I could take you?” The last thing Anne wanted was her friends corrupting the young maiden, after all the work John and Francis did to keep her as pure as she was, which is why, Anne was doing the babysitting while the men played.

It had not been long since Elizabeth Bryan had made her first appearance at court. She had turned twelve a few months ago, and with her mother and father both busy with serving the King, it was much easier to keep an eye on the young girl there then back at her father home. Francis had been put in charge of watching out for his younger sister, a duty that he'd happily taken on. Of course at the time he hadn't realized that it would severely limit the time he had to do whatever he wished. Eventually Francis grew bored of babysitting his younger sister and needed a bit of a break away from her wide eyed, innocent looks that seemed rather endless. The older man also seemed to get tired of her endless questions, as she was still ignorant of how things in Court seemed to work. It was how Anne Shilston, wife of John Shilston ended up getting stuck watching Elizabeth at a disturbingly increasing pace. Elizabeth wasn't quite sure who had suggested the arrangement in the first place. On one hand it could have been John Shilston, bored of hanging around a friend who seemed tethered to a child and unable to go out and do manly things, or Francis himself as he didn't seem on friendly terms with a good amount of women at court.

In the end it didn't really matter though, as she still ended up in Anne's company when she and Francis could be having fun on their own. She didn't understand why Francis had to go off with John or his other friends and leave her here with another man's wife. Wasn't she fun enough on her own? Was it because she wasn't any good at playing cards in the least and preferred to work on her embroidery or learn dance steps? Honestly she wanted to know where Francis ran off to all the time. She'd heard some interesting slips from him, but none of them had made any sense to her. She'd heard talk about a brothel - but she had no idea what that meant. She'd never heard the word before, prior to Francis whispering it to one of his friends. There was also something mentioned about a fig and she couldn't for the life of her figure out why Francis had been talking like it was the most delicious thing in the world. Obviously there was something that she was not aware of, and she had every intention of finding out from the Lady Shilston tonight.

However it seemed her plans were thrown off though, at the small gathering of ladies that surrounded Anne. A small frown curved Elizabeth's lips, and she shifted a bit nervously to take a seat right by Anne, as if frightened by the other ladies. Truthfully they did frighten her a bit, as she had never met them before and they were looking at her in an odd manner. Still at the introductions, Elizabeth did as she was taught giving a little curtsey and saying how nice it was to meet them before returning to her perch besides Anne. Elizabeth was quite certain that perhaps these other ladies would be more willing to answer her questions, as they seemed rather keen on gossip. That's what they were doing...right? Intrigued by what Jane had said, she turned her inquisitive eyes on the two, head tilting slightly. "But Lady Anne I want to know! No one will tell me anything!" A small pout decorated her face, as she looked at the two trying to figure out what they were trying to keep from her.

Anne sighed. Why again did she have to babysit a naïve twelve year old? Was she better off with John and Francis than sitting here listening to her perverted friends? Why did Anne even have these friends? Anne sighed again and stared at the young girl beside her, maybe it was best they left, because surely the longer they stayed with Anne’s friends, pure innocent Elizabeth was going to learn things Francis, John and Anne had taken years to keep from her in mere seconds.

Anne frowned a little. “That’s because you don’t need to know, now come with me Lady Elizabeth.” Anne’s friends though had other plans, they weren’t letting Anne spoil their fun. “Oh come on, Anne, don’t be so mean.” Alice. “Don’t you remember when you were that age? Rachel, and Jane. “Yes, you knew everything didn’t you…didn’t she?” Martha grinned and nodded, leaning in close to Elizabeth, though making sure the other girls could hear. “Not only did she know, but she did. Married at such a young age, only fourteen she was and then she walks right up to the Lord Dorchester to find out just exactly how big he is, and my he was big.” Martha of course knew, because shortly after Anne found out how well endowed that man…that boy had been, Martha had played on his liking for blonds and lifted her skirts for him once he followed her like a dog following a bitch on heat.

Now Anne was embarrassed as well as frustrated and angry. She wrapped an arm around Elizabeth’s lower back and pulled her along. Anne had been drunk on her eighteenth birthday and to ‘celebrate’, her friends had managed to convince her to feel up the fourteen year old William Spencer. He didn’t look his age though, he had grown out, tall as any man, making him appear to be closer to Anne’s age. It mattered not though; Anne wouldn’t have done it if she hadn’t been peer-pressured. Their excuse for selecting her had been because she was the only one married at that point. Anne was just glad John hadn’t seen it; she shuddered at the thought of how her birthday could have ended.

And just to make this night worse, as Anne turned to lead Elizabeth away from her troublesome friends, Anne bumped into a man. She blinked and looked up, about ready to lay down her life in apology, only to realise that she knew this man and she grinned. “Brother! Sorry, I didn’t see you, were you looking for me?” She paused and then noticed the fair-haired maiden beside her. “You remember the Lady Elizabeth Bryan don’t you, Francis’ sister?” She didn’t really know if Charles knew Francis, but it might jog his memory.

Charles made a point of checking in on his sister here and there. Five years after she had been married to John Shilston, he still wasn't quite certain as to what her disposition where the man was concerned was. Charles knew he spent a goodly amount of time away from his sister and with His Majesty, Prince Henry Tudor instead. They had become strong friends, even at the young Prince's age. Quite honestly, there could be little else expected of Charles. He had been given his lot in life and he gladly accepted it.

He was just on his way to greet his sisters, when he caught the sound of hushed feminine voices. Charles made his way towards the sound and soon thereafter had to catch his sister as she all but ran into him on her way out of a room of giggling Ladies who were now peering at him and eying him as if he were the newest source of entertainment. He wasn't overly fond of the expressions on their faces and turned his attention to his sister immediately... and the young girl that was at her side. “Brother! Sorry, I didn’t see you, were you looking for me?” Charles offered the barest of smiles. "Just coming to check in on my Dearest Sister." He commented.

Quite honestly, he didn't pay the young girl much mind until Anne introduced her. He supposed she was pretty enough, or at least would be in her time. “You remember the Lady Elizabeth Bryan don’t you, Francis’ sister?” Charles arched a brow at that and decided it was best to humor the child. She was Francis Bryan's younger sister... interesting. He offered the young girl a courtly bow for good measure. "Lady Elizabeth Bryan... it is good to finally meet you." He commented. He'd heard of the girl in the past, but not a great deal. "I trust my sister is entertaining you well, My Lady?" He asked with a smile directed at Anne who had to be positively adoring being stuck with the young girl.

Elizabeth continued to frown, though the frown now seemed directed at Lady Shilston. Why was it that no one wanted to tell her anything? It wasn't like she was a child anymore - at least not for the most part. She wasn't married, so perhaps she wasn't a woman either. Francis told her she wasn't a child, and obviously if he thought so, other people would as well? Unless he was just telling her that to make her feel better. She frowned deeper, a bit disturbed that no one would let her know anything because they thought she couldn't handle it. She would find out eventually, one way or another! The frown slid from her lips, and a curious look replaced it as the ladies began speaking in hushed tones, drawing Elizabeth in to listen to their words. The hushed tones immediately perked her interest, as it suggested that they didn't want to be over heard.

As the ladies spoke, Elizabeth found herself growing more and more confused. Why would Anne have to walk up to find out how big the Lord Dorchester was? Surely she could see from a relative distance that the young man was very tall? Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion, and her grey eyes shifted to look at Anne, hoping that she would shed some light on the whole situation. Instead Anne wrapped an arm around her, and steered her away from the ladies. She pouted a small bit, considering the women had been eager to inform her of whatever she wanted to know. She still didn't understand why the lord's height was anything of interest. There were many tall men in the court, what was so special about that? She looked up at Anne, about to ask her just that when they were disturbed once again.

Even though Elizabeth heard Lady Anne say brother, Elizabeth was quite quick to shift behind Anne instead of standing right besides her. She wasn't overly fond of meeting new people, as she still felt entirely like a fish out of water. Francis had also warned her that not everyone at court was friendly, and she needed to be careful. He told her to stick close to either himself, John, or lady Shilston and no one else. She didn't understand the warning, but knew better then to disobey her brother especially when he had given her an order. Still, Elizabeth peeked out from around Anne's side, and peered inquisitively up at Charles for a few moments. When he acknowledged her, the young girl turned bright red and ducked behind his sister once more, obviously too shy to even really reply to him.

After a few moments she did realize she was being rude, and peeked out once more, this time from around Anne's other side and gave a little bow of her head. At Charles question she seemed to be shaken a bit from her resolve not to speak and she peered up at Anne for a moment before returning her gray eyes to the older man in front of them. "Yes...though she tells me nothing." She refocused her eyes on Anne, looking like the definition of the word innocent before speaking once more. "Is a brothel somewhere Francis and Sir Shilston go? What is it? Francis would not tell me after he accidentally said it in front of me."

Anne thought she was finally rid of her friends, but she had thought wrong. With Martha’s elbow nudging her young follower, Jane, Jane piped up, just loud enough for Anne, Elizabeth and the sudden appearance of Charles Brandon. “She touched him under the table to see how big his leg was! And boy is he big!” Anne winced, not just for such words being told about her, but for said words to be said about her where her brother could hear. She had done her best to try and hide her flirting ways from him, but it wasn’t working with the friends she keeps. Her friends now went into a fit of giggles, but paused when they realised that handsome brother of hers had appeared and probably heard it all, which of course sent them into another fit of giggles again. Anne sometimes wondered whether they were friends with her purely for the fact who her brother was, well he was just the Prince’s friend, but he was handsome. Surely, her friends, like all ladies at court wanted to eat him up alive.

Well no, the young maiden beside…no, behind her didn’t. She was too concerned hiding from the strange man. Anne smiled softly, a nurturing mother she surely was, which is probably why the fact that she was still childless after five years of marriage upset her. She smiled up at her brother, yes he was busy playing best friend to a royal, but in the few moments he was with her she knew he loved her, which is more that she could say for her husband, she doubted her husband would ever love her. “More like save me from my idiotic friends.” She hoped that suggestion proved as an explanation as well, hoping that he saw their words as lies.

Afraid that he would want to scold her, she quickly turned her attention to Elizabeth. “Elizabeth, do not be shy, this here is my brother, Charles. He is rather nice, I promise you.” Yes, for a price when nice turned to charming and he swept every other girl off their feet just by one look their way. How Anne survived her brother’s charms she did not know, it did not matter that he couldn’t take Anne to his bed, his charm could still work on his sister if he wanted it too. She was still a woman after all, a woman with a husband who did not appreciate her.

And then Anne froze. Wasn’t it bad enough that her friends were making it awkward for her and now Elizabeth had to ask something such as that! Anne sighed and shook her head; glancing at Charles for a brief nervous moment, she returned her attention to Elizabeth and smiled. “It is just a place where men go for drinking and…games. Not a place for women…for us.” Well women were there, but they were of the paying kind, and Anne did her best not to look perturbed by it that her husband was there and not here with her.

“She touched him under the table to see how big his leg was! And boy is he big!” Charles coughed into his hand to make an attempt at covering his shock over the words. That was far more information than he ever had wanted in regards to his sister. “More like save me from my idiotic friends.” Charles arched a brow at that and looked past her at her friends who were already beginning to circle like large cats, waiting for the kill. He could easily see how it was that she needed saving from her friends. Charles wasn't so sure that he wasn't about to need saving from her friends as well.

“Elizabeth, do not be shy, this here is my brother, Charles. He is rather nice, I promise you.” Charles watched the young girl a moment, but didn't wish to make her feel uncomfortable and turned his eyes to his sister once more. He asked if his sister was entertaining her well enough and the response made him look to his sister once more in question. It was the words that came from the girl's mouth next that had him very nearly choking, but highly amused by the girl and her question nonetheless.

He turned his attention to his sister yet again who began answering. “It is just a place where men go for drinking and…games. Not a place for women…for us.” And then it occurred to Charles that his own sister's husband spent an apparent goodly amount of time in such a place. Charles could hardly say anything about the fact that her husband attended such places, but he couldn't deny the fact that it was angering to know that his sister was so unhappy in these regards. He had to wonder if it wasn't for lack of trying to win her husband's affections that his sister wound up shunned by him or what the issue at hand was.

Charles wanted desperately to believe that his sister was leading a fulfilled life, rather than a miserable one, but it was difficult. Quite truthfully, Charles had never truly like John Shilston, but he knew that the man had money. Far more than Charles himself had without the greater blessings of the King and Prince and his own generosity. He knew that he couldn't afford to go offending the man on a dire level, for he would surely get burned. Charles was a number of things and those things did touch on recklessness, and yet... he wasn't utterly stupid. He hadn't remained at the Prince's side all this time for his stupidity.

Elizabeth gained a little courage from Anne's words, and slowly stepped out from behind the older woman. It still didn't help much more then that though, as the young girl still seemed to refuse to look at the young man for very long, and instead kept looking at her feet and shifting closer to Anne every few moments. She was uncomfortable generally being the focus of a conversation, or the focus of anything to be completely honest. It didn't help either, that she found the older man quite handsome, and did not want to embarrass herself by saying something foolish, or something she should already know. It was bad enough she had so many questions to ask, and seemingly no one would answer them. It made her feel foolish, and rather embarrassed when other people knew these things and she didn't. She supposed some knowledge might be gained with age, but she doubted that all of it was gained that way. Some knowledge was gained through experience, and everything else was taught and thus repeated. Which was why she didn't understand why everything needed to be kept away from her - wouldn't she find out eventually anyways?

"Games? What sort of games?" She asked, rather curious as apparently there was games going on, ones that she was not allowed to attend. Obviously if she was not allowed to attend, there must be something of interest occurring at these games, if she was not allowed to partake. Either something extremely fun, or something illegal or sinful. With Francis she wasn't quite sure that he didn't find amusement out of doing things that were deemed illegal and sinful, regardless of the consequences. Still, he was her brother so she would give him the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps he was off to play cards? Though if he was, she was terribly jealous that he was not playing with her, as she did wish she was a better player then she was. "What is the point of going out to drink if they can drink at home and play games at home?" This was beginning to make as much sense as the comments about Lord Dorchester.

Remembering her issue with that, she peered up at Charles for a few moments, as if contemplating asking him why this was. She glanced up briefly at Anne, ruling out asking her. She never really answered her, and if she did she was incredibly vague and Elizabeth never understood what was meant in the first place. Thus the young girl left Anne's side and joined Charles at his side, her small hand reaching out to take his much larger one as she moved to look up at him. "Why would Anne need to touch the lord Dorchester to know how tall he was? Couldn't she simply tell how tall he was from seeing him?" She tilted her head at him, eyes wide and curious. "Anne seems to have good vision so she should have been able to see he's rather tall. I don't understand."

Anne was tired of all of this. Why did she have to stay behind and babysit? Perhaps, John was punishing her for not yet giving him a child. Married for five years and they still had no children to speak of. But was it really her fault? They had fought about it many times, and Anne blamed him for it, because none of his mistresses seemed to be fat with his bastard. But was he actually careful when it came to his mistresses? It was unlikely, for why would he pass up the opportunity to prove that it was all Anne’s fault as to why they had no child. She hadn’t even had a failed pregnancy yet, but was losing a child worse than not being able to reproduce at all?

And now with all of these silly questions Lizzie asked her, she was getting a headache, oh Francis and John owed her big time! Anne shook her head. She contemplated the idea of leaving Elizabeth behind and going for a walk to clear her head. Or perhaps she could meditate and pray to God in the chapel to help clear her head. She stared at Elizabeth with her brother and she wanted to snap at her. Wouldn’t Francis and John like that if they heard Anne had brought the young girl to tears. Well it was their fault for leading the life they did!

Anne tugged at Elizabeth gently, attempting to lead her away from all this madness. “Come Elizabeth, we are leaving, now.” She gave her brother a small apologetic smile and a nod, as she attempted to pull the young girl away from him. Maybe then he would be able to escape her friends who seemed highly interested in the Prince’s friend. But whether Elizabeth would oblige her was another matter, if the young girl fought her, then perhaps Anne would leave her, or even snap at her as she should. Such insolence wouldn’t be tolerated with the naïve girl.
