Forty-six years ago I was born in Hever Castle in Kent, to a wealthy knight whose family fortune from mercery had bought him a daughter of the Earl of Ormonde. My paternal grandfather was a wise and exalted man, was Lord Mayor of London. He secured my father his marriage which amassed our vast fortune in gold, as my mother was the co-heiress of her father; although unable to pass the title, the lands and money of her half passed ultimately to me. My father was knighted by Richard III and in due course he rose in the esteem of Henry VII, being charged with the task of light the coastal beacons to warn of attack. Before long he served as High Sheriff of Kent, and then of Norfolk and Suffolk as well.

I was raised in the spirit of these two men; two men who each contributed greatly to the rise of our family. I was yet destined to push further, and push further I did. My father made certain I was well-educated as a man who was destined to serve the King. I was exhaustively taught languages and useful skills of politics, diplomacy, and law so that not only would I come from noble stock as the grandson of an earl and a rich knight, but would prove useful. A combination I was sure to capitalize on with the aide of my father.

My father arranged my marriage to the daughter of the 2nd Duke of Norfolk, and that was my first act to raise my family yet higher. By my loins, my children would nephews and nieces of the first peer of the Kingdom, a position which could only lift them into the perfect situation as my father lifted me.

Before long I was knighted like my father and forefathers before me, and I began adding accomplishments and experience to endear myself to His Majesty. I accompanied Princess Margaret for her marriage to King James. I became Ambassador to the Low Countries and then to the Low Countries and France, taking with my my daughters and also my son, for a time, although the boy was mostly kept to his studies by force and better off under firmer guidance in England.

I educated my daughters well, exposing them to foreign courts in my duties in Austria and then in France, knowing well that their budding beauty and abilities and womanly knowledge would secure them good husbands.

As I rose in usefulness in the foreign sphere, my brother-in-law rose in power in England, and with our combined wit and money, it seemed there would never be much contest. My eldest daughter I used to try and endear myself to the young heir of France, encouraging her in her flirtations, but it was ultimately my Anne who seemed to captivate without relinquishing her womanly virtues. How could I not use every avenue to get information to benefit my King back home?

With George drunk of wealth and fortune, my Anne became my jewel. I knew that she would be the one to charm men into saying things which I could then use. She could be a weapon more powerful than anything of Norfolk's. Seduction instead of spying.

I have lived my life concerned with one thing and one thing only: the elevation of my family. There can be no firm loyalties other than that. The ends justify the means, I could not agree more. I betrothed Mary off to Sir William Carey, one of His Majesty's young sporting companions and a nephew of old Wilmington. Another old family. Her virtue was in question and considering, it was a good match to not place all eggs in one basket: a notion passed down from when our family was in the mercery business.

George was married off to one of the richest available women, and it was a good use for him, for as much money as he gambled of ours. Our wealth amassed to a great amount and while the coming of the French might have plucked wind from other sails, it bothers me not. It might be in my interests to favour the French over the Spanish for the time that I spent there. If one is sour in an early defeat, then one is destined to always lose. Boleyns do not lose. Not at any cost. Not in any fashion. Adapt. Move forward. Please the King. Move the chess pieces.

My rook which can surprise in any game is Anne. I look out at the world and court and see nothing but ripe opportunity. There is no other truth than I will prevail. In the end, I will prevail, and I will take that happily to my grave thinking that perhaps my great grandchildren will not just be the lines of a duke but still greater yet.
