    > Marrying a woman that will nag him into insanity.
    - - - - Overall Personality,
Walter Devereux is a perplexing man at best. If asked where you might find Walter, you might first say the stables or the yards, saddling up his horse or practicing with his musket, bow or sword. Then you might think about the question for a moment and second guess yourself, remembering that you'd seen him in the library the other day, quietly skimming a book on humanist ideals. It was a strange sight; if he hadn't flicked a page at precisely the right moment, you might have missed him entirely. This juxtaposition describes Walter at his best - a man of war and a man of literature. He enjoys reading almost as much as he enjoys standing on the precipice of a battlefield. A balance of brain and muscle, he quietly asserts himself as a formidable opponent to those that take notice of him.

Seldom few do. Walter is very quiet; though not afraid to speak up when he feels it appropriate, he moves with a confidence and steadiness that keeps him from making an unnecessary motion, thus drawing more attention to himself. This walk has developed from his handling of the sword. Somewhat of an introvert, he rarely says anything beyond what is necessary or what he's thinking. He's friendly, but doesn't speak much and when he does, it's in a quiet, even tone that's usually thought of as soothing. Unlike other military men, he does not insist on maintaining a harsh exterior. His voice rarely rises above an acceptable level, save when he is on the battlefield communicating with others.

Though friendly and occasionally chivalrous, Walter politely keeps others at a distance. He's one of those people you can talk to for hours and have a pleasant time with but never learn anything about. A private individual, he also keeps people away for practical purposes. He has dedicated his life to fighting for the King and for England. He knows very well the risks that come with such an occupation, and he does not wish to leave those who might mourn for him. He communicates very well with horses and dogs, two of his favorite animals; those are his true friends. When very few people are watching, he likes to talk to small children as well. Largely alone save for a sister that he dotes upon, Walter makes friends at court but keeps a personal distance between himself and others that usually goes unnoticed.

Though he is most comfortable with a sword in his hand or riding a horse, Walter devotes the proper time to Mass and prayer. A religious man, he worships just as quietly as he exists as court. He wholeheartedly believes in God and the Catholic Church and is dedicated to his faith. He also takes a great interest in the humanist ideals despite his take on war. Sometimes he can be spotted in the library flicking through the latest work from Erasmus. Before he retires to bed, he likes to read whatever piece of literature is sitting in his room. Not many people associate him with books and learning, but it is clear when he talks that he is a man of some knowledge.

His loyalty to the King and to his own morals is quite remarkable. He recognizes the worth of alliances but is willing to switch them if it appears he is not doing the right thing. His one blind spot is the King - he will take any and every command from His Majesty or his commanders and follow it. To him, disobeying the King's orders is one of the most serious sins. Seldom does he go beyond orders or challenge his superiors, though he does loathe those that hold their position without any real military skill. He hopes to work his way up the ranks, but in the meantime, he is content to serve on the battlefield. He enjoys being in the thick of things.

Though a military life is often chaotic, Walter enjoys peace and quiet. He likes his alone time - he often finds it in the chapel or in the library. Sometimes he'll ride out by himself and stay out for a few hours. It helps to clear his mind. Though he doesn't know quite what to call it, Walter meditates quite often, separating himself from his surroundings and reconnecting with himself. It helps him to avoid any trauma that might have come from his experiences on the battlefield.

When it comes to women, Walter has not found the time or desire to go wife hunting, despite encouragement from his sister. The truth is, he is a little bit nervous. Ever the cautious one, he wants to make a good decision when he marries, picking a good family to marry into and a good wife that will not make him regret his decision. He considers marriage a very big decision, one that he does not wish to consider right now. It is not necessarily a large commitment for him; he doesn't think he'd hesitate to involve himself in an affair if he wished. It is just a decision.

As for the women he sees now... if Walter desires the physical company of a woman, he quietly slips out of the palace and rides to the nearest brothel to spend a night with a woman who's paid for her trade. He wants to avoid a large scandal and takes great pains to not be noticed on the nights he does go out, which aren't terribly frequently. He has not had an affair with a proper woman at court thus far.

  • - - - - Family Members,
    > Sir Richard Devereux [father; deceased]
    > Dorothy Hastings [mother]
    > Elizabeth Deveruex [sister]
    - - - - Overall History,
The Devereux family is of Norman descent. An old family, they first arrived in England after the Norman conquest in 1066, settling in Lyonshall and Bodenham, Herefordshire. Walter is the eldest and only son of Sir Richard Devereux and Dorothy Hastings. His paternal grandfather, the 9th Baron Ferrers of Cartley, was created Viscount Hereford in 1480. It is from him that Walter has inherited his current titles. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Manners, 1st Earl of Rutland, 13th Baron de Ros of Helmsley and Anne Woodville. His parents had one other daughter before his father succumbed to the sweating sickness when Walter was 13. He has not forgotten his father.

Walter's dedication to the King and to his military duties was fostered by his grandfather and father, both of whom took an active role in raising the boy. After his father's death, Walter's grandfather's role in his life increased. It soon became clear that Walter had a passion for warfare and he was quickly trained to use muskets and bows. Though the sword's use in warfare is fading, Walter seemed particularly fascinated by the swordsmen he watched, and now he practices it more as a hobby than as something he might use practically in the future. He also learned more of strategy and began to read many books on the matter.

Additionally, his guardians stressed the importance of morals to him. He has a strong sense of ethics and keeps to them as often as possible. He also has an interest in humanist ideals, though his own views on war conflicts with some of them. Raised Catholic, Walter still believes in obeying God and going to Mass frequently. He trusts in God to get him through each day and believes that God has given him the strength and skills he has.

From a young age, he recognized that he would be going off to battle as soon as he was able, and he welcomed the opportunity to travel to France with His Majesty's troops to fight in 1512. He did well during the battles he participated in and received thanks from His Majesty in return for his service. Content with the king's praise, Walter has returned to life at court where he appears when necessary and remains mysteriously absent during all other points. His grandfather's recent death hit him hard; he would rather have his grandfather than the titles that were given to him after the man's death. This thought he keeps to himself. The only person that might suspect how he feels is his sister, whom he has kept away from court thus far until he finds a man worthy of marrying her. Walter's standards for that man are very high. His poor sister may never marry.

  • - - - - Roleplay Sample,
    Code:

The chill of winter had long since descended on London, and Catherine frequently took to her chambers in an effort to ward off some of the bitter cold that seeped under the windows and crept along isolated corridors. Her household knew to keep the fires burning and well stocked, and the blankets that covered her at night were thick and good. The English winters were long and dreary. It was during the cold season that Catherine's spirits began to fall. Too often the cold reminded her of the days following Arturo's death at Ludlow Castle and the bitter taste that had lingered on her tongue.

Her skirts rustled over the floors as she moved through the gallery at Hampton Court, her eyes looking inward instead of at the stunning paintings on the walls. She had been in the gallery many different times to marvel at the portraits. Now she felt as if she could close her eyes and point to each individual one. For too long she had been in England without husband or purpose. The similarity of each day that passed was enough to push her to the brink of madness. In an attempt to get out of her chambers and find something that would lift her spirits, she had come to the gallery. Instead of finding a breath of fresh air, she found herself in a place so familiar that she could know it like the back of her hand.

At least it was soon to be Christmas. Catherine enjoyed the Catholic holidays, though they were celebrated differently here than in Spain. The traditions and customs of the courts did not matter as much as the religious significance did. Soon Christ would be born again, God's greatest gift to humanity. Catherine paused in front of a painting, eyes moving over the scene before her without really seeing the magnificent colors. Not for the first time, she wondered what God had planned for her. Uneasy, she thought of the French presence at the English court. She did not want them here as much as they did not want her or her family's influence here. Would that she were queen so she could truly express how she felt! They would not have dared come otherwise. The king's mind had been polluted by the influence of his cardinal and her father's actions. There was nothing she could do.

Her stomach was clenched uncomfortably as she moved to the next portrait, thinking of what might come. The ladies that accompanied here were surely bored. They had seen these paintings as often as she had, and more than one did not share her appreciation for art. They had little choice but to follow their mistress, and she had little choice but to wait and wander these familiar halls. Catherine paused at the next painting, eyes not seeing anything but a dim film of gray. Perhaps it was best if she retired to her rooms again. Mouth pressed in a thin line of impatience and melancholy, she started down the hall again in an attempt to look at the art on display. She would hold on a little longer.
