Quod verum tutum: All things are safe. --Motto of the House of Courtenay

In spite of my titles (officially, I am the Marquis of Exeter and the Earl of Devon. Of course, the titles are inheirited, but I don't feel that it is that important to get into at the moment. All in due time...all in due time.), I am just Henry to my friends and family. I was born in the year 1489 to Sir William Courtenay and the Princess Catherine of York. So, this makes me have a blood claim to the throne through the House of York. Not that I ever want the throne; I see what my cousin must do for our country and praise God that he was chosen instead of someone like me. I am not one for being too overly involved in politics. I wasn't when I was young, and I am still not to this day. Though His Majesty has done much for me and has granted me great favor, I don't like to shed blood, figuratively, over titles and land. I have title enough, and perhaps this is why I feel I don't need to curry any more favor.

My family was in favor at court because Henry VII was my uncle, and my mother's sister, Queen Elizabeth, was my aunt. We, and when I speak of we I speak of my younger sister and me, were kept away from court, and for good reason. Politics was the reason my father was put into the Tower of London. I never really knew the reason, I just remember that it was due to some kind of attainder, and what my mother told me: The favor of a king is favor that is here one day, and gone the next. My mother was strict, as most mothers often are, and made sure my sister and me were thoroughly educated with the best of tutors. She also made sure we had time to simply be children and play, and I remember holding Margaret in thrall with favored tales of chivalry and the knights of old rescuing the lady fair. I hope, and still hold hope, that one day I shall have my own lady fair.

When I was a young teenager, around thirteen or fourteen, I was sent to court and further educated along with my cousins. I became great friends with Prince Henry. How, I don't know. I was educated in the usual fashion...I was taught to ride, handle a sword, and at the insistence of my mother, continued to be educated in the arts (poetry, music, song, and dance). I also know Latin, Greek, and French. I am teased that I am more like a woman in that regard, mainly being taught in the arts, but when it came to the insistence of my mother, I cannot and still cannot say no.

The ladies in my life have been, and always will be important. Not only do I dote on my mother, I also dote on my younger sister, Margaret, or ma petite fleur, as I call her. It does not take much for me to do their bidding. In fact, when my mother wrote to me and asked for me to find my sister a position here, I could not say no. She was a lady of the late queen, and as of late, the betrothed of my dear friend, Lord Wilmington. We met when we were young, as he stayed at our estate, and we hit it off immediately. I honestly knew what I was doing when I helped to...urge them together, but my sister deserves true love, and I can see that Wilmington makes her happy...whenever my sister is happy, I am happy.

In regards to me, well...my mother is insistent upon me marrying, as I so should, so my titles and lands may be secured via my firstborn son. But since I hold several important titles, I feel like I have the right to be choosy. Besides, I don't want any woman to feel like she has to marry me, and I don't want to marry a woman because of my titles. I want mutual love and respect between us. I, well...I tend to fall in love rather easily. Unfortunately, I tend to fall out of love rather easily, for it seems all women are the same. Though I know God has someone in mind for me, and I am not going to marry until she materializes. For now, I am content with my place here at court, and with my life.
