CHARLES BRANDON

CHARACTER PICTURE HERE

* An armoured arm rests against a streaming flank.
The bold horseflesh he has to thank.
His chain-gloved hand caresses the mane.
He rests his sword, releases pain
And looks into that other world
Which opens when he stares
Into the amber orb of his mount's eye.
Do not give up, it seems to say,
I will bear you until the world's end and beyond.
You, my steed, you know my need.
You nuzzle me while here I bleed.
Without, from wounds in battles fought.
Within, as love's losses are hard taught.

Character history:
Who could imagine , in the warm summer night of the year 1491, when the old knight Sir William Brandon called his four orphaned grandsons near his death bed to tell them his last wishes , that his second grandson, Charles Brandon would become, one day, the King’s friend? And who even thought then that Henry VIII, the second son of the first Tudor King of England, would become King, when everybody thought that Arthur was the one to succeed to the throne ? History has many unexpected turns and old the Almighty God knows what someone’s life will turn into.
Charles Brandon was the son of Sir William Brandon and Elizabeth Bruyn. His life was tumultuous and full of adventures, leaving behind not just a few wives, but also many mistresses. Charles has risen to wealth and prosperity due to two facts: first – his father, Sir William Brandon, who stayed loyal to Henry VII and joined, followed by his younger brother Thomas, the Duke of Buckingham’s rebellion against the usurper Duke of Gloucester . He has died at Bosworth Field, being killed by Richard III himself, the man who usurped the throne in 1483. Second – he successfully retained Henry Tudor VIII’s affections for his lifetime.
His childhood was not as easy as it apparently seems. His mother Elizabeth died in childbirth when Charles was a child. Soon after that, his grandfather died, in 1491. The orphaned boy and his brothers moved to the court, where the King Henry VII took Sir William Brandon’s loyalty to him in consideration and decided to keep the boys at court. His Majesty had two sons , Arthur and Henry, who soon became the boys’ playmates. A few years later, Arthur married and the court moved to Ludlow Castle. It was a decisive moment for Charles, for he had to decide between leaving London with the court of Prince Arthur or remain with Henry, Arthur’s younger brother. The decision was not easy to be taken because both Henry and Arthur were his good friends and, by staying with one, he had to be away from the other. But, in the end, the young Charles did not follow the court, but stayed in London as companion to his childhood friend.
Unlike Henry’s older brother, who was delicate , Charles was robust, healthy and enjoyed many sports. This was a good thing, because he could be the young Duke of York’s companion in the most part of his time. So the two young boys became close friends .When Henry became the King of England, Charles started rising to privileges and his life changed. In a few years, he became the Duke of Suffolk. Once Henry became King, he could trust just in a few people. Due to his natural loyalty and the friendship between them, Charles was one of those Henry trusted in .
Charles met the beautiful and charming young lady Catherine Howard, daughter of Edmund Howard and Joyce Howard. The two married and had a beautiful beginning. When the war against France and Scotland started, Charles had to leave and follow the King and the army, serving His Majesty and the country in hard times. A war was far from being an enjoyable thing, for beyond the political interests and matters, there were many lives that have been sacrificed. Many soldiers that left their wives and children at home found their end on the battlefield. Both France and Scotland were not easy at all to handle, but thanks God, the war ended with England’s victory.
Charles is , first of all, a loyal friend of His Majesty the King of England. The dawn of his life has not been sunny, but the Almighty God gave him much fortune. When everything seemed lost, God extended his hand over him and blessed him with a lifetime and precious friendship then with beautiful, prosperous favors. Charles learned quickly and became, from the orphaned boy, a strong and charming man with many virtues – courage, an athletic body, battle skills and a passion for jousts, hunts, swords and archery. Though, as any man, he has his own faults. Maybe the lack of motherly love turned him into a man with passions for women. Also, he likes to gamble, sometimes he spend nights with friends in taverns , drinking and rambling. He has a slight tendency to become arrogant and unprincipled.

    RP SAMPLE:
Early in the morning Charles was sitting on a chair in his room, by the open window that allowed him to see the whole magnificent landscape of the royal courts of Whitehall Palace. A warm breeze of spring was fluttering his curly brown hair giving him a pleasurable sensation of freshness.

The winter was gone and the spring could be felt not only in the wonderful perfume of blossoming trees and spring flowers, but also in the sound of the twittering birds that brought more charm to the landscape the Duke was watching lost in thought, his chin rested in his palm.

A few days ago, he had to leave his mansion in Suffolk and return to the court, where his lifetime friend Henry VIII was. His third wife, Duchess Catherine had to stay home with children .Their son, Henry , was only five years. The Duke chose to call him after his best friend , as honor to His Majesty. Then, another reason why he chose this name for his son was the memory of his first son , the child his beloved third wife has given birth to in the year 1523. The King named little Henry Earl of Lincoln in 1525, when he was two years old. Unfortunately, the Almighty God has decided to take the boy in Heaven on first March 1534.

Two years ago, the Duchess has given birth to another boy and Catherine decided to call him Charles, after her husband. The two boys were the pearls of the Duke’s eyes, but he loved his whole family. The eldest daughter of Charles was lady Anne Brandon, married to Edward Grey . As he thought of her, Charles let out a deep sigh. This girl has given him many headaches and would cause him to get old and gray earlier than he expected. She had a scandalous life, living openly with her lover Randal Haworth, then left her husband , who already has taken a mistress who gave him four children.

Since 1531, Charles has passed through hell and shame due to this former daughter of his. Many times, he asked for Cromwell’s help to punish and discipline her, so the Secretary had to send her many times to the Tower, but to no avail. Her marriage was irreparably altered and Anne continued to live with her lover.

As these thoughts, Charles rubbed his temples and let out a deep sigh. Last days, he has received a letter from Edward Grey, telling him that he was going to ask the King to punish Anne for adultery. Due to this news, Charles didn’t sleep too well last night. Nightmares invaded his brains, causing him headaches.

Lady Mary Brandon, the second eldest daughter of the Duke, by his second wife Anne Browne. She married Thomas Stanley and, thanks God, she was an obedient child, unlike her elder sister Anne. When lady Jane Seymour was the Queen of England, Mary served her as lady in waiting. Two years ago though, she and her husband had a quarrel and Thomas Stanley decided to complain to Cromwell about her misbehavior. Cromwell was already accustomed to her elder sister’s misbehavior, but he was wise and asked Charles about Mary. It took a few months to Charles to solve the conflict between Mary and her husband, but he kept her away from punishment and the Tower.

Then, his second child by his third wife Mary Tudor was lady Frances Grey, niece of King Henry VIII and Queen Margaret of Scotland, who gave birth to lady Jane Grey in 1536. She was close to the Queen Catherine of Aragon and childhood friend of her cousin Mary Tudor. Loving and being loyal to her cousin, she never accepted the annulment of Henry’s marriage to Queen Catherine and Anne Boleyn as Queen of England or legitimate wife of the King

Charles had to admit that Frances was the most energetic and ambitious child of his. With her uncle’s permission, she married Henry Grey in 1533 and gave birth to three daughters after her first two children died young. Strong woman, she inherited her father’s taste for wealth and political influence. Having high expectations from her daughters, she gave them an education to the same standards as her cousins, the two daughters of King Henry. So high standards that in the end the three daughters of hers had more luxurious lives than Elizabeth and Mary.

In the end, younger Frances’ sister was Eleanor, who married Henry Clifford in 1533 , with the approval of her uncle. She, like Frances, has been a supporter of Queen Catherine and her cousin lady Mary. Two months ago, Eleanor and her husband visited Charles and Catherine and announced them that she was finally pregnant. This made Charles be happy and proud of her daughter, who, like the other sisters of hers, were obedient and didn’t disappoint him , unlike his former daughter Anne.

He could sadly notice that the King was not too happy those days. Something was bothering him ,something His Majesty didn’t tell him about. At least ,not yet. Many times, the Duke and the King shared many thoughts and stories, telling each other what worried them or what made them happy. Those days though, something was changed in Henry and he was missing so much the old days when he and his friend were talking.

A servant entered his chamber and announced him that the King summoned him and other Ministers to join him in the Privy Council. The King wanted to talk to them. As he heard the news, he stood up quickly and changed his clothes then went to the King’s office, where the other men were already waiting for him.

Thanks for applying at FKAC, Ally!

With your writing sample we don't think you would fit in here at FKAC, so sadly we are rejecting the character of Charles Brandon.

Thanks!
