I am Lady Elizabeth Bryan. Perhaps you've heard of me. My older brother has made quite a name for himself here at court, and with wine constantly loosening his tongue, conversation has surely turned to me every once and a while. Francis and I are very close, you see. My dear brother and I grew up together and spent nearly every waking moment together while we were young. No one else understands me quite like Francis does, as it should be between two siblings. Our love for each other is very strong, and any time we spend apart has only served to strengthen it.

We've had our disputes, of course. He slept with one of my dearest friends when we were younger, and that didn't sit well with me. He spent days begging my forgiveness afterward, when he wasn't cursing my stubbornness or the ill fortune that set upon him after I walked in on the pair of them. I do not forgive easily, though I am slow to rise up in real anger. Francis and I tease each other and bicker as siblings do. My tongue is sharp - so is his wit. I will tolerate teasing, but I will not tolerate insults under any circumstances. Francis claims my ability to hold a grudge is both my greatest strength and the thing he dislikes most about me. If I did not love him as my brother, I do not think I would have spoken to him after I found him lying between my dear Mary's legs.

Do I posses the sinful nature of my darling brother? Ah, if I answered that too quickly, you would lose interest in me, and I cannot have that. Let us put things this way - I was not angry with my brother because he slept with a woman he was not married to. Rather, I wished to protect Mary's innocence. She was always such a sweet, pious little thing. I myself am Roman Catholic, though I am more like my brother and less like dear sweet Mary was before she tumbled into his bed. Am I ashamed of myself? No, I cannot be, though I must keep my relationships quieter than my brother keeps his. After all, I am a woman in a court of men and while I may banter with them, I know that I am always subject to them, unless I can tempt them into my way of thinking. I only have eighteen years, but I have learned this - if you learn what a man really wants, you can have him eating out of your hand. I grew up at court, and I have watched, listened and learned by example.

My parents, Sir Thomas and Lady Margaret Bryan, both hold offices in the royal household. My mother in particular holds an important task - she is the Lady Governess to the King's daughter - but my brother's position will bring us all good fortune. He is one of the King's best friends and sits as a member of the Privy Chamber. More importantly, he keeps the king in good humor and because of him, I too am a member of the king's inner social circle. I am no stranger to the lavish masques and dances and have performed in many of them - now that I am a young woman, my performance has been more carefully observed by the men of the court. The look in their eyes is a source of my constant amusement.

My brother is many things - a diplomat, a soldier, a sailor, a cipherer, a man of letters and a poet. But his true calling lies in knowing what makes people happy and giving them what they want in order to earn favor and get what you want in return. He may bounce from side to side in a debate, but he always stays with the king's opinion. This is an important lesson. I know it well. If I am to make a good match for myself, I must tempt and twist and hope that Francis does the same. As a man in the king's favor, he is already in a comfortable position for life. He can be a rake and get away with it. I cannot. Every move must be purposeful. Once I have my malleable master, I shall do as I please.

  • - - - - Roleplay Sample, Celebrations before the season of Lent were customary here and elsewhere; a chance to take in the pleasures of the world before releasing them for a month. Catherine looked forward to the mediation and reflection Lent brought. The silencing of social celebrations brought with it a peace and a chance to become more one with God. It was among her favorite times of the year - naturally, she enjoyed Christmas as well, but Lent carried a special weight in the Catholic calendar. Easter was among the most sacred and beautiful days of the year. She only missed celebrating it in Spain. Faint memories flashed across her eyes of her in a beautiful church with her parents and siblings sometime when she was very young, before they were all married to different parts of Europe. It had originally been her destiny to become Queen of England, thus making the alliance between Spain and England permanent. Now it seemed God had other plans for her.

The plans tonight included attending the Carnevale celebration put on by the Queen and her ladies. From what she'd heard of the Italian celebrations, Catherine wasn't entirely sure what to expect. They sounded very... wild. She and her ladies had dressed in their traditional attire, festive, but still a conservative English. It was strange to think of herself as an Englishwoman now, even after the time she spent in the country. In her heart, she would always long for Spain and the happiness she knew there. England was a lonely, rainy place. Spain held sunshine and warmth. Every night she prayed to God that He might make His plan for her known soon. She had mourned Arthur for years and while she still loved her departed husband, in her heart she felt the years pass. She wished to be useful and fulfill her duties as a woman. She wished to give a man children and honor Spain, and now England. Here at this court she did nothing but watch and listen and hope.

The smell of frankincense and camphor had hit her nose even before she entered the great hall. It made her nose crinkle. That was nothing compared to the sight that met her eyes when the Queen herself entered. Her Majesty and her ladies were scantily clad, and it made Catherine's stomach turn over to look at them. She understood the desire to look pleasing to the eye, but she did not endorse the state of undress most were in now. She and her own ladies were covered tonight; perhaps that would make them less appealing to the masses gathered here, but it was better this than gallivanting around. Her own virtue had been called into question before. She would not give others more reason to suspect that she was not as pure as the day she'd been born. Neither should her ladies draw unwanted attention to themselves. Catherine was strict in that she would have no person in her household, man or woman, be a poor reflection of herself and Spain. She might have to consider herself an Englishwoman now, but she would always be a princess of Spain.

With a wave of her hand, she gestured for a glass of wine to be brought. Some courtiers seemed to live for the drink and the fuzzy head that came with it, but she only wished for wine to steady her nerves. The incense in the air made her feel lightheaded. Perhaps she would not stay long, though she wished to enjoy a little bit of music and dancing before the season of Lent. Catherine might not approve of the dress of the people around her, but she did enjoy the arts. The music held a hint of the similar style performed by those influenced by the Moors before they were driven out of Spain by Ferdinand and Isabella. It was too exotic to be that of the English Court, but Catherine did not find it entirely displeasing. If only the men and women around her would conduct themselves more properly. Ah, well. There might as well be some enjoyment before Lent - though no one would ever find Catherine dressed in some of the outfits that ladies were wearing tonight. Her eyes lingered on the dancers, particularly one handsome young man before she forced herself to glance away. As pious as she was, she could not deny her own loneliness.
