Sir Arthur Lambert had been charged in secret by Cardinal Wolsey, who nobody knew was Arthur's father, to keep an eye on Edward Seymour. The man obviously wanted to make sure that Seymour was still one of his allies. Seymour had been, but one never knew when that would end. Enemies were cunning and unrelenting. Arthur was loyal to the cause of protecting his and his father's interests, because they were one and the same. Arthur would have nothing without His Eminence, and he values his intelligence and diligence as a son (or he had grown to). Following a meal in the Great Hall, everyone was making conversation, rising to dance, or to speak in corners, or to play cards. Arthur, who had been waiting for an opportunity, noticed that Mistress Jane Seymour, sister to the Duke, was not surrounded by company. He was a friend of the King, and it allowed him to come up to most without fear of some sort of rejection. It made his pursuits so much easier. He walked up to the seated woman and gave a bow. "Sir Arthur Lambert," he introduced. "Might I join you? I do not believe we have been formally introduced." Arthur gave her a charming smile which was friendly and not suggestive or lascivious. |

Jane Seymour was rarely approached by men, mainly because most men who wished to approach a woman were after something. It was widely known that she would not compromise herself just to make a man happy for one night or even a whole month. She was no man's mistress, though she occasionally partook in courtly flirtation. That was rare, though, so there were very few who did so. She didn't mind, actually preferring it that way. If men weren't around her, her brother couldn't start to think she was compromising herself. However, if the time ever came that she did compromise herself, no one would ever know. She wouldn't breathe a word and would make certain the man did not either. That was why she would never consider lifting her skirts unless it was for a man of principle. She may have flirted with the idea of doing so for Charles Brandon just to slap the Howards in the face, but she had not seen him in a while and assumed he'd gone onto another, believing nothing would happen. She couldn't blame him. These things were what made her blink in surprise when a man, who introduced himself promptly, approached her. She thought he looked familiar, but wasn't sure. She certainly hadn't known his name before, but she did now and so she smiled at him. "You may." she said easily. "I am Mistress Jane Seymour." |

Arthur smiled, trying to give it a hesitant quality. He did not want her to feel that he was an aggressive and over-sure man there to only ascertain the likelihood of bedding her. Arthur knew how to make it seem that he was intrigued by a woman in a gentle way instead of a gruntingly masculine way. "Mistress Seymour, a pleasure," he replied with a nod, sliding gracefully to seat himself on the corner from her. "I must say you are a difficult woman to make the acquaintance of without making a spectacle." Of course he wanted to seem like the sort that did not egocentrically seek the limelight of foolishness. He wanted to seem to have some discretion. One never knew what the truth was with Arthur Lambert, but nobody knew that slight fact. "I am quite fortunate to catch you mostly alone amid a flurry of people enjoying themselves." His large, dark eyes looked around as if surveying the merry-making with amusement. He sat fairly straight, holding a noble air, but not a haughty one, probably something which labeled him as not being of noble birth. He was just a knight. Well, he was the son of the most powerful man who nearly ran the kingdom, but that was besides the point. "How are you enjoying yourself? Ready for us to be upon the season of sacrifice and lent?" He quirked an eyebrow at her as he smiled and took a sip from his drink. |

Jane studied him as soon as he sat next to her. There was nothing that immediately put her off and that was quite a feat. She was naturally wary of everyone, knowing men and women alike often approached her in hopes of getting in good - or ruining - her elder brother. She didn't what this one wanted just by looking at him; it was rare that she got it right off, but she would be careful. As he was a Duke, there was always a danger of someone trying to get close to his family members. She didn't know if it happened to Elizabeth or Thomas, but it had certainly happened to her. However, she would reserve judgement of Arthur. "Fortunate you say?" Jane smiled, keeping her voice as soft and demure as ever. "Whyever would that be? Were you hoping to do so?" That wasn't exactly suspicious. Perhaps he had just thought her interesting and seized the opportunity to speak to her. That would be a first. No one judged her as interesting as far as she knew. When they looked at her, they saw the soft-spoken, demure and dutiful sister of the Duke of Somerset. Not exactly a bad thing, but as she was coming to realize, it was not a good thing either. However, the Queen seemed to recognize she was more than what she put forward. Jane turned her attention to her plate, lifting a food item she wasn't paying attention to and eating it. "I am always ready for anything God or the King wishes to happen or be." she replied. "As for enjoying myself, I suppose I am enjoying myself well. Eating dinner is not exactly exciting, but it is a nice thing if the food is well-prepared." |
