February 1512 The cold and crisp air was refreshing from the dark and warm embrace of Hampton Court. The snow and frost glittered like jewels as Anne Boleyn walked the grounds alone. Her fur mantle that she wore over her gown of dark blue kept her most warm, as well as the gable hood that matched the mantle. Her footsteps crunched the brittle snow, and when she exhaled, light plumes of vapor escaped her mouth and nose. Henry was married. He had been for quite some time now. Anne's lips tightened as she thought on it. She was forbidden to see him again, and she had thought after some time, the fact would be easier. It was not. She had tried to dull the pain by looking to other prospects -- Earls, sons of Earls, Marquesses perhaps -- They proved a good diversion, if nothing else. Anne Boleyn was not stupid. One did not marry for love, they married for wealth and position. It was foolish of her to ever think she could have Henry Percy's heart and his marriage bed. What a juvenile thing to do. And so she turned towards the future that could bring her -- a title and a wealthy man who she didn't care for in marriage, but she could give him sons and she could live. She could live without Henry Percy, as much as she didn't believe it to be so. |
