As Elizabeth stood in front of the mirror, she fretted. Not at her appearance, for once--for in the three-month-long leave she had taken from court, she had been so preoccupied with other things as to almost forget her insecurities of herself entirely. She had filled out since her initial illness after her husband's death, and now had a decent amount of flesh where once there had been too little. She wore a new gown, of cream and white, and was proud of the stitching she had done with it. No, it was not her appearance which made her nervous.

If only she had waited another day to return! She had hoped for a quiet evening, to unpack, and to visit her sister and friends. But all were gathered at the little ball. She felt she could hear the music and laughter through her open window. But she soothed herself as she placed her French hood on her head. A ball would do her good. She needed company, after so many weeks with none but a few servants, always pitying, always consoling.

Leaving her servants to unpack for her, she made her way toward the Great Hall. Near the open doors, she paused, drawing in a breath. In her hands she held a parcel wrapped in paper and tied with ribbon. It was thick and heavy, not as heavy as something wooden, but perhaps dense cloth. She made her way into the Hall, moving to the side as a pair of over-zealous dancers whirled near her. Making her way around the back of the crowd, she began to search for the familiar face of William Parr.
