Late February 1512

It was a series of unfortunate instances because Mary Percy did not believe in fate. She had once said that fate did not dictate one's life and it seemed fate had disliked that. She spent the better month of the month, agonizing over Edward's betrothed who seemed so kind, and the previous week she found she was not pregnant like she thought. It was as if someone was playing a cruel game with her, dangling everything she wanted in front of her before it was yanked away forever.

She was doing her best not to feel sad as being sad didn't get one anywhere. This was a lesson she learnt in her self-imposed seclusion. So she pulled herself from bed that morning, again glad not to wake up next to her husband who was far away at court, and dressed with the help of her ladies before heading down to breakfast.

Out of the corner of her eye, she thought she saw Thomas, but was disappointed upon seeing her eyes had played tricks on it; it was only a tall servant. In this month, her brother-in-law was something of a comfort though she wouldn't dare admit it to him. She was certain to be rewarded with a cocky smile and a Of course I'm making you happy. It wasn't that she didn't like his smile or his ego; quite the contrary, it was part of the reason she liked him.

Despite these thoughts, she went on a search for him, quite determined to ask him to accompany her on a ride. Since she discovered she was not with child the previous week, she now felt ready to get onto the saddle again and ride for hours. She was even considering asking the servants to prepare a lunch that she could take with her. Of course, she wouldn't go if Thomas declined, and would take the lunch outside, even though it was still quite cold. But Mary felt the promise of spring, deciding she would take the hold of her life again.

Fate had its turn.
