Late January 1512 Charles Howard was not happy and when he was not happy, he could be found among books with a furious need to read every volume in sight. He was currently seated on a chair in the library, books thickly covering the table next to him and a few on the floor near his feet. He had grabbed a stack of them and meant to put them all on the table; he had failed since the awkward tower had fallen. So dark was his mood that he didn't care, despite always caring for organization. He was a hater of clutter, but that didn't matter right now. What mattered right now was that the woman his uncle meant for him was a heretic. It didn't matter how learned she was reported to be. Even if she was pardoned by the King himself, how was one to say that she still didn't hold it within her heart? She was Essex's sister, though, so he suspected this might have something to do with it. Essex and his other sister were in the Tower as well for the same crime, also pardoned. Charles didn't understand how she could be an addition to the family with her family disilluisoned heretics. Angrily, he turned the page of his book and slumped back in his seat. A woman like that, why would he want her? He was certain there were other more learned women of the court that he could marry instead. Certainly his uncle had other prospects? Once he was done here, he would immediately go to him. In fact, he would go to him right this moment, but as he stood, something caught his eye. A lady in the library. His favorite. |

Katherine walked into the library and sighed with relief as she rubbed her temples. The noise and chatter that was an everyday occurrence in Her Majesty's Apartment had given her a bit of a head ache. Which was why she actually relieved when she reached the silence of this particular chamber. If she were to really consider her actions, she'd see that she was hiding. And she was. Ever since she had been so unceremoniously thrown into the tower with an accusation of Heresy hanging over her head, Katherine knew that, although pardoned by the King himself, she'd become an even bigger pariah at court. Despite the fact that she had lied trough her teeth while being interrogated by the Duke of Norfolk, Cardinal Wolsey and even the His Majesty. And they believed her, they had to otherwise she'd still be in the Tower awaiting the same fate as Anne Askew. Instead, she was let go and Her Majesty had taken her back into her household like the prodigal daughter that she was. Which was, rather disturbing. She would've expected at least some form of punishment. Just not the one that she had been given. Because not long after she had left the Tower and was reinstated to her duties she'd gotten wind of the news that the Duke of Norfolk had big plans where she was concerned. Marriage plans. He apparently wanted to marry her off to one of his nephews. It sounded quite absurd to Katherine, especially in the light of everything that happened recently. Why would a man for whom Power was everything would want her associated with his family was actually a little beyond her. Not that Katherine had much say in the matter. As far as she knew, with how close her brother and the Duke have been, despite everything, she'd be married before she'd had the chance to blink. The jumbled mass of thoughts turned itself around in her head as Katherine walked among the rows and rows of books. Some of them were dear friends, some the source of most of her troubles, but she loved all of them equally. She stopped in front of one particular shelf, reaching for a well known volume of Plato's Republic, when a noise coming from nearby startled her a little. She turned and looked at the young man, who was quite obviously scrutinizing her. "I'm sorry, my lord. I didn't mean to disturb you." ooc: Please excuse this obvious postage failure. It will get better. I promise. |

"I'm not disturbed, good lady." Charles replied, hoping his voice sounded as polished as he wished for it too. His uncle had a way of talking that he wished to emulate, but it would take more study to do so. Everything that he said seemed to carry weight and really matter, even if it had no true bearing on the world. Charles wished to be like that more than anything, even if he was a younger son and really of no consequence. If his words were weighty, wouldn't he then be of consequence? He certainly thought - and hoped for it. Suddenly realizing the lovely (though decidedly older than he) woman was still standing there, he bowed gracefully to her. "I am Lord Charles Howard." he told her, deciding thoughts on his heretical wife-to-be could be saved for later. Above all, he respected learned women. He knew most men would think of them meddling in men's affairs, but as he had thought time and time again, he would not care for love or sex if his wife could hold a decent conversation with him. In fact, the more he thought about his heretical near-wife, he decided that perhaps it wouldn't be bad if he couldn't convince his uncle otherwise. "And you are ...?" |
