* He'd a French cocked-hat on his forehead, a bunch of lace at his chin,
A coat of the claret velvet, and breeches of brown doe-skin;
They fitted with never a wrinkle: his boots were up to the thigh!
And he rode with a jewelled twinkle,
His pistol butts a-twinkle,
His rapier hilt a-twinkle, under the jewelled sky. .

Henry Courtenay, the Earl of Devon and now Marquis of Exeter, has always been closely linked to the royal house of Tudor and Plantagenet, so close that his father was incarcerated on suspected correspondence with the House of York. It was then that he lost this chances at succession of the Earldom of Devon.

Born into a life of luxury and nobility, being the grandson of Edward IV of England, Henry Courtenay had never been at the forefront of politics. His grandfather, a supporter of the Tudors in the War of the Roses, gained royal favour and vast lands in Devonshire. His father, William Courtenay, was also beloved by King Henry VII in the lifetime of his wife’s sister, Queen Elizabeth Plantagenet. William took for his wife Princess Catherine of York, the daughter of Elizabeth Woodville and Edward IV. However, his fortunes took a turn for the worse when the King grew worried of his close blood relations to the throne and incarcerated him for some trumped up charges regarding the House of York. William died there, not having see his children or wife again.

Henry was raised with his mother, a kind, devout woman who told him to leave politics to the older men and focus on his love for music, poetry and conversation. Under her skill and love, Henry blossomed into a learned young man with a penchant for writing verses and composing music for his sonnets. He grew up in a storybook, living in a castle with his darling sister and (for a while) his younger brother, listening to the olde tales of Arthur and the Knights, Saint George and the Dragon among others.

That’s why he never found out why his father one day suddenly disappeared. He didn’t understand at his young age. He was only ten at the time. His mother kept all of the unpleasantness out of the castle, a magical enchantment that Henry remembers fondly, as if no force of evil could ever penetrate the stony walls. So he spent his days there in idle fun, learning from his tutors, (tutors that were under the same school of thought as those of his cousins Princes Arthur and Henry). They were not allowed to teach him of the outside world, his childhood preserved by a mother that was perhaps over protective of her children. She had survived the war of the Roses, she was determined her children never see the same. Henry didn’t learn that his inheritance was jeopardized until after his father had passed on. At that point, his mother started calling him little Devon while he was prepared to go to court and thank the good King that his title was restored to him. Little Devon indeed, he was ill-prepared, in the sheltered life of childish delights, for the court ahead of him. At the tender age of fifteen, he was thrown into the court with little ceremony, a traitor’s son who was lucky, the unwanted cousin of the two Princes.

Unconventional in many ways, the Earl of Devon still believes in silly ideas like true love and chivalry. He prefers composing poems to currying favour with the King, and because he is the Earl himself, he knew he could choose his bride. He would choose her for beauty rather than position any day. He was genuinely excited about stories of love, with no artifice involved in making it seem effortless. Henry was a rare breed at court, protected by maternal love and the luck of his good birth.

Yet there it was, and he was at court nonetheless. The younger Prince Henry had always loved Princess Catherine, Henry’s mother, and so he was able to become a part of the his household. Put with the Princes, he grew up as a great friend of Henry VIII, swearing his utmost loyalty to him in both games and in seriousness. They would often play King and Knight together, and the young Earl would always profess to be the loyal knight. Always smiling, he has a naturally good nature and a kind heart. He loved deeply and truly, always with sentiment. It worried his mother that Henry seemed to fall in and out of love with surprising ease, each moment taking him deeper in passion that was dangerous and seductive. Yet it was a fleeting moment, and soon, Henry would grow tired of his affections and move on.

Although his love was quick, it was by no means easy. No one truly knows what it takes to earn the affections of the Earl of Devon. They would only watch him write sonnets, sing songs to his beloved, and wonder when his affections will cease and he will turn towards someone else. Yet, despite his amorous affairs, Henry was a knight first and foremost, a noble who administered his land, a man with a brain between his ears. At the ripe age of seventeen, he proved himself on a naval campaign against France as the second in command. His political life began then, and he was woken up to the world outside his storybook castle and the idle summer nights in Devonshire.

When King Henry ascended the throne, Henry Courtenay’s fortunes took a turn for the better. He was created Marquis of Exeter and Constable of Windsor Castle. The King urged him to take a frontline role in politics. Learning from his years at court, he was nonetheless still the young ingénue when it came to cutthroat negotiations. More controlled by his mother than he could care to admit, he was urged to see the good in all, not a very effective strategy in politics. However, his kindly and naïve nature brought him success nonetheless, as the courts of the Continent took to the young Marquis with the honest and sometimes blunt tongue.

After a short diplomatic stint in Venice, he was summoned back by the King and his mother to find a wife among the English ladies. Arriving back, he found himself a privy councillor and a gentleman of the privy chamber at the same time. Now, at his mother’s urgings, he searches for a wife to uphold his newfound respectable position. He has vowed that he will not marry if not for love, and that there will be no chains to shackle him to a woman he does not desire.
