late December 1511 Ursula Pole had limited knowledge in dealing with her peers. Her childhood friends had been her younger brothers, and only interacted with women her own age once she arrived at court. Due to her minimal interaction with the same gender, Ursula was wrought with nerves at the idea of Katherine and Anne Parr coming to her room for a quiet supper away from the banquets of court. Not only were they her fellow ladies-in-waiting, but they were also the sisters of William Parr, the man she happened to love. Ursula had felt obliged to invite them over to get to know them. After a night with William, in which he talked about his sisters, Ursula thought it a good idea to send an invitation to her rooms for dinner. By now they knew of William's affections for her, whether it be love or not, and she wanted to get to know them. She had heard so much about them, from their intelligence to their wit. One could easily tell that William was very fond of his sisters. She envied that closeness. She had no close family at court, and at times she felt lonely. She would watch the Howards, Boleyns, Seymours and Parrs with jealous eyes, desperate to have a steady shoulder to lean on. Instead she had to fend off numerous women who excluded her from their circles. It was no secret that Ursula was not as liked as she would hope among the ladies. She had no problem getting along with and attracting men. She had had many suitors over the years due to her wealth and youth. However, when it came to making actual friends Ursula was at a loss. She had a few friends, but not many, and always managed to annoy someone with her strong opinions and supposed naivety. Her most recent confrontation with a lady ended with her terrified and her opponent, Anne Boleyn, walking away with a smug smile on her face. Since then, Ursula had been more careful about who she talked to, and the things she said to them. Ursula arranged the candles on the table, which caused a warm glow to be cast about the room. The room was small, but extravagantly decorated. Everything from the pure gold candle sticks to the fine perfumes and oils that lined her desk. She wanted everything to appear perfect, right down to her appearance. For the dinner she selected a simple red gown, which complimented the russet tones in her dark hair. Her hair was pulled back neatly in a bun that rested on the nape of her neck. She turned away from the table to face her mirror. In the glass she could only see a young woman who appeared innocent and friendly, just as she expected. She did not want to intimidate the Parr sisters, so she thought it best to put on a sweet facade for the night. Ursula could be a perfect hostess when she wanted to be. Years of education in the womanly arts had prepared her for this. While she could not cook- not that she needed to- she could prepare a wonderful get together. Though tonight, she kept her little party simple. There was merely a table set up in the middle of her room, along with three sets of plates and silverware. There was meats set upon the plates, ripe with heat, the steam rising from their surface. Ursula smiled at her neat display, content with the elegant simplicity of it. She was no scholar, as Will said Katherine and Anne were, but she could be a perfect, doting wife. She would be the wife he deserved, as opposed to the wretch he was stuck with. She returned back to her mirror checking her reflection once more before taking a seat at the round table. She hoped they would not be late, Ursula despised tardiness. |

Katherine was wary, to say the least, as she approached Ursula Pole's chamber with a few minutes to spare of the time that had been indicated in the message she'd received. Despite, or maybe because of the fact that Ursula was one of many Ladies - In Waiting they might have spoken maybe a handful of times. Katherine was, of course, aware of her brother's intent to marry this girl as soon as the matter of Anne Boruchier would somehow be dealt with. Now that she was thinking about it, she realized that maybe this was why she was so wary. Because, after everything that her sister in law had put William through, Katherine would most likely be suspicious of any girl that her brother would've grown close too. But that didn't change the fact that Katherine actually felt a strange...almost kinship with the other girl mixed with maybe a tiny bit of jealousy. She had a feeling that if her father hadn't died, her mother wouldn't be so busy making sure that their family stayed afloat and would probably insist that Katherine would put as much, if not more, heart into learning household management like she did the other areas of her education. Just from looking around the room, she could see just how much effort had been put into this evening. Everything looked perfect. And maybe that was the problem. After all, perfect was usually too much to ask for. They had a good lesson in that. However, this wasn't a time for dwelling on the past but rather thinking of the future. "Lady Pole, thank you for this invitation." She said. |
