Dante Giulio

-- When not in church wears a simple brown cassock. If it be cold or rainy he wears a black Farraiolo over it. When in church, he wears a white alb, over which he wears an Amice and a green stole. A black biretta tops his head. The alb is tied at the waist with a brown cincture. --

Manipulation - Dante is excellent at reading people. He knows extremely well, how to push people into going the way he wants them to. Prince or Pauper, only the most observant, intuitive and strong minded people can keep from being swayed by his skillful manipulation. As priest, and confessor in a place of trust, he has an added advantage…
Deceit- To manipulate on has to lie. But then… Dante’s whole life is a lie. He works as a priest, weaving a careful tapestry of morality and religion. One of the pope’s most zealous followers, one would never suspect him of being the power hungry womanizer that he is.
Charisma - With deceit and manipulation comes a charming personality. After all, to have the most influence one must be liked. Women find him to be virile, strong and manly, while men find him to be of admirable character; one they can admire.
Gambling - He likes to gamble and take risks. Calculated risks. Father Dante, is not above sacrificing a relationship, position or façade to achieve his goals.
Ruthlessness - Does this man really have feelings? Perhaps the world will never know. Dante sure doesn’t. He’s lived a life of deceit for so long he doesn’t even know who he truly is. He does know what he want’s though… And will stop at nothing to get it. It is this disregard for all but the goal which makes him such a formidable opponent.
Knowledge - He’s a priest. Not only does he read books in his spare time (Which brings him knowledge on many subjects), but he keeps a journal… A Journal of Confessions…
- - - - Weaknesses,
Women - Just because he loves ‘em and leaves ‘em doesn’t mean a few of them don’t leave their mark. There is always that chance that one time-just once- he might actually, truly, fall in love.
Gambling - Risk is risk. Being willing to risk everything isn’t necessarily as wonderful as it sounds. There are lots of horrible ends… carelessness breeds folly.
Power - Dante has an unquenchable thirst for power. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and the Father is no exception. Given enough time and rope there is a very good possibility he might just hang himself.
Pride - Being as wonderful as everyone thinks he is, he is bound to be proud. Father Giulio has more than his fair share of the deadly sin.
Passion - Father Dante has a terrible temper. His is not the violent kind. His is the slow, boiling, vengeful wrath which simmers and simmers until it strikes like fateful lightning.
- - - - Dreams, Aspires to one day achieve the most powerful position in all the Christian world: The Papacy. The thought of near omnipotent power just put him the throws of ecstasy. If he can’t get that, then he would like to make a coup and take the throne. - - - - Fears, Well, there is always that fear of being found out. Father Dante also fears excommunication, and being charged with heresy. Also fears insignificance, and obscurity. Regrets that he is more like his father than he would care to admit.
- - - - Overall Personality,
At first encounter, Dante Giulio is a charming and reserved young man. He does not talk much, though he has a quick smile and an eagerness to please. Always considerate, he seems to know exactly what to say and do in any given situation. You could say, dealing with people was his strong point. The soul of discretion, one can tell him anything.
Laidback and easy going, he makes a good impression with the women. He knows how to take charge, and isn’t afraid to pursue the object of his affections. Women seem to flock around him in droves. Men too come to him, because they find that he can be trusted to accomplish tasks and lead his flock. They admire him for his integrity and strength of character, seeking to become more godly in their own walk, that they may lead their women and children aright.
A very nice man indeed.
Below this wonderful exterior lies a being with all the wonder and attraction of a snake. The sad truth, despite his position of social trust and moral responsibility is that Father Dante Cappi Giulio is a very, very immoral man. Many a good woman has been deceived by his sweet lies. So much for that vow of chastity.
Power hungry, he seeks to claim the throne or the papacy. Blackmail, murder, arson, and the all powerful accusation of heresy are but a few of the tools he has at his disposal. As a priest and confessor, he keeps a journal of all the goodies his unsuspecting victims lay at his feet. These divulgences he uses like cards in poker, slowly, quietly….mercilessly bringing his victims to their knees.
Arrogant and vengeful, Dante’s enemies remain blissfully unaware of their impending doom until it‘s too late. With a wrath that simmers until it boils over, the priest’s manipulative persona enables him to strike with crippling swiftness.
Deceitful and Manipulative, our beloved priest will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Most of his manipulations are so subtle that they seem to come entirely from other people. He is almost never considered the source. When he is it often because he was accidentally at the wrong place at the wrong time, and some pinhead mistook what he said. The most common response to any accusation in his direction is “Who? Him? Don’t be ridiculous!”
Aside from his winning ways and delightful personality, our good father has a fondness for class and sophistication. If it weren’t that he took a vow of poverty his humble home would be full of the latest fashions from Paris, in both furniture and clothing. He delights in court music. Due to being priest and confessor to the lovely Francesca de Medici, he gets to go as often as he likes.
He really does like court. The only reason he puts up with the stuffy, self-righteousness of the church is to gain the pope’s good wishes. He detests all the restrictions placed upon him by the church and longingly awaits days of greater power and freedom.
- - - - - Family Members,
Father: Adolpho Giulio. A humble Farmer, who died of alchohol poisoning. Mother: Caterina Giulio. A nun in a local convent. Sister: Ersilia Giulio. A devout and upright nun in a small local convent in Italy. The only one who has ever had a truly taming influence on the wild and reckless Dante. Five years his senior.
- - - - Overall History,
Dante grew up on a small farm in Italy. His father was an abusive alchoholic. When he was not drinking, beating his wife, or manipulating his family, he was gambling. Adolpho Giulio nearly lost the farm. As it was his family spent their lives in wreched poverty, barely able to afford food. Caterina had to take up work as a housemaid, so Ersilia and Dante were left to themselves. Together, they worked what they could of the farm. Kind neighbors pitched in when they could.
Caterina tried her best to instill in her children a love of God and an adherence to morality. Despite her husband’s behavior, she strove hard to keep the house peaceful, and to point out the good qualities her husband possessed. She taught her kids the rosary and took them to mass every Sunday.
Ersilia absorbed well, her mother’s morals and, aspiring to be a devout and holy woman took God as her bride at the tender age of 17; joining the local convent as a Sister. Dante, on the other hand was too bitter and resentful to desire his mother’s morality. He resented his father for his contempt and cruelty. He despised his mother for what he perceived as her weakness. He felt his sister too was weak. Brainwashed into forgetting about him and keeping her responsibilities.
He really resented Ersilia’s taking of the vows. Not only had she been his one comfort and companion, but she had helped vastly with the responsibility at home. With her gone, Dante’s bitterness just became worse. His heart twisted inside him and shriveled up. After his father died, his mother too, left for the convent and Dante Cappi Giulio was left to fend for himself at the age of 18. What could he do? He did not want to be a farmer scraping about in the dirt and muck for a living. He knew no other trade. But there was the church. How he hated the church; taking from him all he had. And yet, to be of the church was to have power. Power, status, meaning. Escape. And so he too joined the church, giving up his possessions and taking his vows.
…Becoming one with that which he hated most.
If one is going to do a job, one ought to do it well. Especially if one is going ot move up in the world. Dante swiftly became the most devout, God-fearing priest in the church. His higher-ups started recommending him and by the time he was twenty he had been promoted four times, each time to a better parish.
So it was in his twenty first year that he was taken under the wing of Cardinal Giovanni de Medici, who saw in him much promise. There he served in Rome, and was introduced to the Cardinal's brother Giulio de Medici, and her ladyship Francesca de Medici, the Cardinal's daughter. For a year and a half, he served in Rome, caring for his parish with all the love, devotion, and attention he could give it; serving alongside Brother Giulio.
Then the plague struck.
It was here, that Dante's commitment and passion for the Lord truly shone as it never had before. Dante spent many sleepless nights, and stressful days visiting with the sick and ministering to them. He rolled up his sleeves, and helped the doctors, learning from them what he could. --Doctors being in short supply, his help was greatly appreciated.-- He held mass, and last rites for the sick. It was said that his parish had the least rotting carcasses and the most saved souls.
The townsfolk weren't the only ones touched by the plague. Even the Holy Church felt it's terrible grasp. Among those lost to the dark pestilence was Francesca's confessor, Raphael Colombo.
During his short time in Rome, Dante had made good friends with both Francesca and Giulio. Not only had he earned their respect, he had their trust. As Cardinal Giovanni's protege he got to attend important meetings, offer the occassional (if rare) bit of advice, and take up slack which others were unable to attend to.
So when Raphael died, both his friends were clamoring at the Cardinal to have him as the replacement.
"But he is so trustworthy!"
"...so dedicated!"
"Oh please father! I wouldn't feel safe confessing my wrongs to anyone else!"
And being the kind hearted father that he was, theCardinal agreed.
And so it was, that Dante became the personal confessor and priest to her ladyship and future Queen of England. He is wholly loyal to her, seeking to use her as a pawn to acheive the papacy. Especially, now, that Cardinal Giovanni is now Pope Leo X and his good friend Gulio is Cardinal Clement. Either by succession or ...chance... he too shall become pope. Right now, little stands in his way but the rank of Cardinal.
- - - - - Roleplay Sample,
It was a beautiful sunny day. A moderate breeze was blowing. Birds could be heard in the far off, singing God's praisies. Flowers bobbed their heads in merry greeting. Anyone would have stopped to take in the beautiful scenery. Not Father Giulio. Dante's footsteps padded down the dirt road towards one of the houses in his parish, the hemof his cassock swishing against his ankles. He did not so much as notice the breeze which ruffled his short brown hair and stroked his face.
No. The good father was too intent on his goal. Today he was on urgent business. One of his sheep was sick, and he had been called on to pray over the infirm and anoint them with holy oil. His long legs stopped infront of the door way as he knocked. There was a moment of silence. A rustling at the door, and then an old woman with kindly wrinkles and friendly blue eyes was peeping her head out of the door.
"Come in! Come in, good father!" She beamed, opening wide the door.
"The Lord bless all in this house." And Father Giulio crossed himself.
One glance around the interior showed how bad the situation was. The place was in complete disarray. Old clothes strewn here, old dishes strewn there. Somewhere a faint moan could be heard.
"I'm so glad you came. Her fever's been pretty bad.." She shuffled her way through the mess to a curtain in the room beyond. There, with the covers up to her neck, lay Elizabeth Stafford. Her black hair was strewn across the pillow in sweaty disarray. Eyes glazed with fever, face flushed, she stared blankly at the ceiling. Only when Dante's face towered over her weakened frame and flooded her vision did she turn her head to greet them.
"...Father..." she muttered, a smile smoothing her worn features. It was a very warm smile. Friendly, and something else. Was it love?
"Hush, now." The priest's baritone uttered soothingly as Elizabeth's mother set about smoothing her patient's brow and fussing in anxious concern; plumping pillows and arranging bedcovers. She was such a frail looking thing. Soft and tender, there in the bed. So vulnerable. So innocent. Only eighteen. Dante found himself wondering what was under the bedclothes.
But that was for later.
Father Giulio knelt down by his patient's bed, folding his hands in prayer.
"Holy Father,
We come before you this day, humbly seeking your healing for your ailing child. Grant her peace and rest. Heal her body. Thy will be done, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen."
He rose, crossing himself. And then he reached into his pocket and took out the vial of sacred oil. Gently he rubbed a bit of oil on her forehead, with his strong thumb.
She had such nice soft skin.
As he lifted his hand away, Elizabeth's expression took on a sweet smile. She closed her eyes, shifted her position to get comfortable, and then for the first time in two days slept easily.
Mrs. Stafford was delighted. "I just knew you could make her better!"
Father Giulio just smiled. He nudged his chin at heaven. Mrs. Stafford blushed with shame. "Of course, of course. Forgive me." The priest smiled again, a gentle smile, full of grace and humor. "-Won't you stay for dinner?"
"Thank you kindly ma'am" He smiled, " but I'm afraid I have quite a few more calls to make today." That baritone was full of regret. He did so like her vegetable stew.
