Mid-January 1512 Mary walked down the hallway, lips pressed tightly together, jaw set. She had just caught word of a rather unpleasant rumour. Normally, such a thing wouldn't bother her. Since a very young age, when she had resided in France, Mary had been subject to many, many rumours, most of which being extremely unflattering. Why, it had been one of those rumours that had been her downfall, and the reason she had been sent back to England in the first place. A rumour. A silly, pathetic rumour. Like the one she had just heard. People were talking about her and John Shilston. As well as her cousin, Mary Howard, and her affair with the knight. If that hadn't been enough to laugh at already, that John was bedding two Howard girls, bur of course, it wasn't. It hadn't been Mary Howard's name that had been dragged though the mud once more. It hadn't been Mary Howard who had caused Anne Shilston such grief that she miscarried a child. That was more distress than she had ever caused before with her various affairs. More stress than Mary knew how to handle. If the speculation was true - she had overheard it from several of the maids after all - it wouldn't be long before John removed her from his life, and moved on to someone else. That though, really wasn't what was bothering the eldest Boleyn girl. She could easily find another bed to insert herself into. That had never been a problem before, and Mary knew that it would cease to be a problem in the future. No, she could deal with that easily enough. The guilt, however, that would forever loom over her head, would be too much. How many other marriages had she wrecked? She had lost count years ago how many affairs she had taken part of. God knows how many bed's had belonged to married men, and how many of those marriages had ended because of her. Mary needed a distraction. She would welcome anything with open arms, anything to help her forget about John Shilston and his wife, anything to... Wham! It was like hitting a brick wall. Mary stumbled backward several paces, her head whirling. What in God's name had she run into? How could something what solid just come out of nowhere? After several seconds, Mary was able to clear her thoughts, and come to the realization that it wasn't a question of what she had collided with, but of whom. It was a man. A very, very handsome man. Mary had never seen him about court before, so she assumed he must have just arrived. Well, then. She swept into a low curtsy, and looked up at him though her eyelashes. "I apologize greatly, milord," milord seemed like a good assumption, seeing as though she was unaware his social rank, "how careless I am, in running into you. Are you hurt?" ooc- not the best post ever, but it has started! |

William strode alongside an attendant of his as he made his way along through Hampton Court Palace. He had only just returned from the de Burgh manor after having visited, primarily, young Elizabeth de Burgh while he had been looking for none other than the Baron himself. Luckily, William got along with the entire de Burgh family and the Baroness had been nothing but accommodating the entire duration of his stay and he had thoroughly appreciated the hospitality. But now he was right back at the one place that he actually didn't appreciate having to be. He was back at Court and it damn near drove him insane. He could think of a dozen or more places, easily accessible, that his sword arm would have been far more productive in. He was tired of the pageantry, but apparently, it was a necessary part of being who and what he had become. It didn't mean he had to like it by any means of the word, but he certainly had to appear as if he were perfectly comfortable, lest he be picked clean by the vultures that swooped down at any given moment. The attendant had been quiet a long time, taking note of the mood that Sir William Kingston seemed to be in, but he finally spoke up. "Sir William, I trust your visit with the Baron and Baroness de Burgh was pleasant?" The attendant ventured. William snapped back to the present and turned his head to address the man as he carried on. "It was. Make note that I need to pen a letter to the Baron and Baroness to thank them for their family's hospitality." He said simply. The attendant nodded. "Will that be all, Sir?" The attendant asked. William glanced at him again and then nodded. "That'll be all. Just prepare my room. I'm sure I have more than a few things to tend to after my leave." He commented. The attendant bustled off in the next moment. Just as William turned back to face the direction he was walking in, he ran into something significantly smaller than him. Not so much something as someone. Instinctively, his arms went out to steady the girl he had run into, a frown coming over his features for all of a moment before he wiped it clean and took a step back from her. She immediately swept down into a curtsy. "I apologize greatly, milord," William shook his head. "I'm as much at fault for that as you are, My Lady." He said genuinely. "how careless I am, in running into you. Are you hurt?" He gave a rich chuckle at that question. "I should be asking that of you, Fair Lady," he said with a shake of his head. "I'm far more worried over your well being than my own at the moment." He finished. He placed a hand on his abdomen and gave a slight bow before casting her a smile that immediately transformed his rugged features from dark and brooding to much more friendly and inviting. "Sir William Kingston and it is a pleasure to have run into you, My Lady. I can only hope that you'll forgive me for having let it happen." He said, unable to shake the quirky smile, given the situation, from his lips. |

Although the day hadn't started out well for Mary, somehow, by running into this man, it was slowly progressing. She straightened from her curtsy, and surveyed him further. His features were dark, and he was much older than the majority of the men she enjoyed having in her company, but he was extremely handsome, and Mary wasn't one to wave away opportunities like this. She flashed her companion a smile as he insisted it was just as much his fault they had collided as it was hers. "Oh no," she exclaimed. "I am very much so at fault. Should I have been watching where I was going, rather than being so oblivious, this would have never happened. Although," Mary lowered her voice a margin, "I am quite glad it did." Mary smiled again, glancing up at the man's face, listen to him talk. He was concerned for her well being. Mary couldn't help the flush that rose up her neck and onto her cheeks. He sounded so genuine, and the look of concern on his face couldn't be fake. And he had called her fair. There was no chance she was going to leave this chance alone, not after it had been ever so conveniently laid out for her. Who said she wasn't ambitious? "I thank you for your concern, milord. I am quite fine, and I hope that you are as well." It wasn't as though this were the first man who had called her fair. No, during her time at both the English and French courts, there had been countless young men who had sought her out, bought her things, and invited her into their bedchambers. Few, however, had been genuinely sincere. That was what separated this man from the others. That was, until he bowed, and introduced himself as Sir William Kingston. Mary had already heard of him. Him and his recent engagement to Lettice Knollys. Engagements were rarely something that stopped Mary. However, with her recent experience with John Shilston and his wife and her miscarriage, something was screaming for her to stop and not get mixed up in yet another marriage. Her common sense though, had long since left her, and Mary found herself curtsying again, and introducing herself. "It is a pleasure, Sir William. If it pleases you, I am the Lady Mary Boleyn. I thank you, genuinely, Sir, for you apology, which I would only ever dream of accepting. Perhaps, though, you would consider escorting me back to my chambers, in hopes to make sure I not run into anything else." |

Kingston had to admit that the woman before him was quite beautiful, but it took a lot more than charming feminine wiles to force him from his unerring path. She was polite, if not a little insistent, over the situation, but he graciously accepted her apology as he hoped she accepted his. If one of them hadn't made a move towards forgiveness they, no doubt, would have been going back and forth, exchanging their apologies, for the next several minutes. But then she tacked something on to the end of her apology that made one of his brows twitch in question before he smoothed out his facial features. She was glad she had run into him? What a peculiar statement. "I thank you for your concern, milord. I am quite fine, and I hope that you are as well." Kingston nodded. "No harm done here." He said with a sheepish smile. "Though I suppose the fact that the impact must have been akin to running into a wall considering my height and stature and your more dainty repose." He admitted, in no way ashamed of his own size and not insulting her in the least. Kingston wasn't a fool. He knew well enough that he was significantly larger than most all of the men he had encountered to date. It suited him just fine. He had, after all, seen lesser soldiers balk and shy away from him on the battle field. She introduced herself to him and he raised a brow at her name. Mary Boleyn. He had heard a great number of things about the Boleyn family and had even watched a few of them from afar. Interesting that he should encounter one of the family members in such a way, but he didn't comment on that for the time being. "Perhaps, though, you would consider escorting me back to my chambers, in hopes to make sure I not run into anything else." William eyed her for a moment. This sounded suspiciously like a trap and yet, his honor wouldn't allow him to deny a lady's request. He paused a moment before nodding and offering her his arm. "Very well. If it'll make the Lady more at ease, it'd be an honor to escort her." He commented. |

This knight, this Sir William Kingston, seemed the part of a perfect gentleman. He apologized, and she had done the same, although perhaps she'd been a little too insisting. Should he not already know of her reputation about court, the forwardness of her apology would seem out of place for him. It was quite possible that she had been too bold, too early. She simply nodded when he spoke of his stature. It was true, what he said. William was much taller than most men at court. In fact, he had a similar stature to that of the king. One that certainly got you noticed. That in mind, Mary's gaze swept over him a second time, taking in his features. He was so handsome, and for a minute, the sting of John Shilston seemed to fade. Especially when he agreed to escort her back to her chambers. Smiling, Mary took the knight's arm as he offered it to her. She'd been right. A true gentleman. True gentlemen seemed to be growing all the more rare, and now that she'd found one, Mary really didn't want to give him up. "I thank you, Sir William. It does in fact, put my mind at ease. More than you would understand." It had been so long since Mary had felt the way she did on Sir William's arm. Security had never really been a constant feeling in the many affairs she had. Even with William Carey. He had never been fond of her adulterous ways, and she always feared that it would spur him to back out of the betrothal. Then where would she be? Walking with Sir William made her feel so secure, and so safe that she decided there and then, she wasn't going to give something like that up, regardless of his personal opinions. "Have you been at court long, Sir William?" ((That was a tad short, but I think it conveys everything it needs to. xD)) |

William felt her eyes on him a moment and he wondered if he hadn't misread this entire encounter. He did his best, for the most part, to keep himself out of the gossip circulating around court, but it was difficult sometimes, especially when a lot of the Courtiers were just looking for a reason to include you in their gossip. As a new Knight, new to court and the ways of word, most often thought that William was naive and even stupid on some fronts, but the man was anything but. He may have turned a blind eye to comments circulating and chosen to steer clear of the gossiping ladies and scheming gentlemen, but he was, by no means, stupid. She seemed pleased when he agreed to escort her and offered her his arm. He may have grown up in a small sheep farming area, but that didn't mean that he hadn't been raised with impeccable manners. In fact, when one grew up in a common family, they strove to teach their children the way of the Ladies and Lords as, more often than not, they believed that acting thusly would bring them closer to the salvation of God. After all, the King was chosen as a servant of God himself, was he not? The King answered to no one but God. William Kingston had, indeed, been raised with manners. If he had nothing else to thank his family for, he could thank them for that small favor. "I thank you, Sir William. It does in fact, put my mind at ease. More than you would understand." William wasn't sure if he was simply reading more into the situation than he should have been or if she really did mean for that to come across in quite the way it was. He let it be for the time being however. After all, he was a much larger man than she was a woman and quite capable of bodily removing himself from her presence of he felt he had been slighted in the least. "Have you been at court long, Sir William?" She had been silent for a long while and, as such, her words shook him out of a quiet revelry. He glanced at her, giving the question thought for a moment. "I've been knighted by His Majesty for a while not, but have only just recently come to court. My duties have otherwise kept me away from partaking in the more leisurous pleasures of Court lifestyle." He admitted. "I've only truly been at court a month or two now." |

Mary felt his eyes on her a minute, and that familiar flush rose up to her cheeks. No. No she couldn't. Not when her affair with John Shilston had already caused such stir about court with so many rumours. If anything, now was the time to be discrete. Sir William was so terribly handsome, and it was tempting to further her knowledge of him. However, that simply wasn't how Mary did things. She had a reputation, yes, and she did enjoy the company of men, but rarely did she instigate any affair herself. Shameless flirting was no crime, and it was what had set the majority of her affairs in motion, but never did Mary initiate any physical contact. Sir Kingston had offered her his arm, and she had taken it, simple as that. It would remain simple up until the time when they would have to part ways as he left her in her chambers. Up until that point, shameless flirting would hurt absolutely nothing. She listened to him speak of how he had come to court. So he had not been there long. Good, her reputation would have not yet preceded her. Mary's reputation was not something she was proud of. Not in the least. She had been cast off many times because of it, and had cost her the love of her betrothed, and her family. Thankfully, for once, it would not ruin what she hoped would further into something of a friendship with William Kingston. "I see," she commented. "Well I'm glad you have come to court. Though somewhat scandal filled it can often be, I am sure you will come to find it a quite pleasurable place to be." Mary paused for a second, thinking back to what he had said. Obviously, there had been something keeping him for court in the past. Why else would a man like Sir Kingston, of obvious good fortune and appearance, seclude himself away from an experience that most of the country would give anything for? "I myself have been at court serving the Princess Mary. However, I was at the French court before that. I suppose you can say that much of my life has been spent with that of courtiers and the queen's ladies. But tell me, Sir William," how strange it was, that he have that same name as he betrothed, "what has kept you, from court so long?" |
