December 1511

Though marriage was prevalent in young Charles Howard's mind, he still followed the siren call of knowledge and this was why he was currently in the library, perusing the rows and rows of abundant literature. There had to be something, he thought, that he would find scinctillating. It would have to prove distracting or else he would move on to the next. He needed something that he could whilst he waited to meet the woman his uncle had chosen for him.

Truthfully, he was rather anxious about the whole affair and hoped he wouldn't want to run the other way when he wanted to do his uncle's bidding. He feared this woman would not be someone he would want and, despite his loyal and reverence for his uncle, he might find he had a rebellious streak like his cousin, George Boleyn. Somehow he doubted it, but the concern was still there in the back of his mind.

Turning down another aisle of the grand library, he reached out and plucked a book off the shelf. It was quite old-looking and dusty, as if no one had touched it for years. He took it over to a chair nearby, sitting down in it, and opened it. The pages were yellowed and the script hard to read. He made a face of distaste, rising, and replaced the book on the shelf. That wouldn't do.

He kept his hand on the books, running his fingers along the bindings. It was amazing - and a little overwhelming - to see so much knowledge in one place. In all likelihood, he would be spending a great deal of his leisure time here. He felt at home in a place such as this and secretly, he hoped his wife to be would be learned or willing to learn. Even if they didn't connect well enough in the bedroom, at least they would have something to converse about.

Yes, Charles Howard liked intelligent women.

vérité sans peur
Sneaking away from her duties, which at this point in the day was chatting and sewing, was a relief. Catherine was a social sort, enjoying the company of others, yet she did not quite like getting her ear talked off about nonsensical matters. A trip to the library was what she needed to freshen her mind from discussion on gowns and other frivolous, womanly topics of conversation. As she walked down the hallways she wondered what book she would surreptitiously steal for her own perusal, coming up empty. No matter. She was here. She could take all the time she needed to go through the many volumes of literature. Her Majesty truly didn't need her presence.

Catherine immediately went for a familiar row of books, where she had earlier picked up works by Christine de Pisan, not even noticing that there was another soul loitering about nearby, going through books on his own. Pulling out a leather-bound volume, she paused, noticing the presence of someone else. An unfamiliar man. She was vaguely surprised, knowing as she did that the library wasn't exactly the place to be at court. The library was no great hall for dancing and flirting, it was quiet and often empty. That was what she liked most about it.

But not today.

"My lord," she spoke tentatively, glancing him up and down, wondering who he was. There was something about him that was familiar--and then it hit her. He was Charles Howard, one of the Duke of Norfolk's many relations. It seemed there were so many of them, all brought to court to snap up power and position like crumbs underneath the great patriarch's table. "Ah, Sir Charles." Catherine flashed him a small yet polite smile, a little hollow, with only a hint of warmth to it; she had not the easy charm of some women, and she wasn't about to start. "I am surprised to find you here. The library is not where I would expect to find anyone else. Have you found anything worth your interest?"

Conversation was not what she had been looking for, but perhaps they could speak of intelligent things, thus at least clearing Catherine's brain for some interesting, scintillating talk, not the sort she got as a lady of the Queen of England.

Catherine is in 2 threads.
