December, 1511 When Luke was five years old, his older brothers cornered him and Mattie held him down while Roger tickled him until he wet himself. They let him go immediately after, but there were a few moments that lasted longer than they had any right to last, when he knew what was coming and ached with impending humiliation, not to mention the pain of holding it in when he really, really needed to go. Luke felt that way as he stepped into the confessional. He knew there was no reason to it. God was everywhere, knew everything, so making confession ought not be any more difficult than knowing what he had done. It ought to be easier, if anything! Luke was truly sorry for what he had done and had faith that God would forgive him, through one of His representatives on Earth. Nonetheless, he had the sort of feeling that might make a lesser man’s hands shake, but for all his failings Luke had at least some small amount of self-control. He took a deep breath. If he had not deemed it utterly blasphemous, he would have thought a quick prayer for the strength to get through this. Why did he feel this way? Luke liked hearing confession because he truly believed when people left the confessional he had helped them come closer to God. He had never sent someone away, never told anyone they were beyond redemption, so why was he so afraid that would happen to him? Besides, many people, most people made mistakes, it did not make them monsters. Even the saints, in their time on Earth, erred sometimes. “Forgive me...” Luke paused. He had spoken too softly, too nervous to speak properly. He licked the roof of his mouth so his tongue would stop sticking. “Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been six days since my last confession.” And in those six days, Luke felt he had bruised his soul like... well, it was difficult to think of a comparison that did not involve his brothers. |
