December, 1511

There was no stopping him now. Lately Cecil's life had revolved around the treasonous plotting with Buckingham. It was December, and Christmas season was hanging around court, making the air sticky with smells of mulled wine, eagerly attempting to muddle Cecil's mind and keep it off the ridiculous task of attempting to put together an army to conquer the King of England.

Of course, this was Cecil we were talking about. All the joy and mulled wines of the Christmas season could not sway his mind from its one goal: to place Buckingham on the throne of England, so that he might become an all-powerful duke, right-hand man to the King. What he had always wanted.

And so it was only to keep up appearances and perhaps scope out potential allies that he found himself dressing in his finest of Christmas-inspired outfits and strolled toward the festivities that were being held in honour of the Christmas season. Cecil looked every bit the fashionable and gorgeous man in an outfit of strong red and green, matching feathers poking from his perfectly aligned hat. He was, by far, the most over-dressed, yet most charmingly dressed, man at the party and of that he could only be proud. He much loved being the fashion wizard he was and it showed as he strutted into the hall, wearing his garb with pride.

His eyes scanned the hall of dancing people. He would have gladly taken a cup of mulled wine, did he not think himself too busy looking for something advantageous to his situation.

Of course, with keen, greedy, hawk-eyes like his it did not take him long to spot the sister of his new ally John Shilston. Cecil, still uncertain and for ever paranoid about alliances in matters this grave, decided to approach the lady known as Grace Shilston and bow to her. "My Lady," he said. "I am Lord Bamford, Cecil Williams.

"Dare I say that you look in need of company?"

Parties really weren’t Grace’s thing. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy them, but it made a lot of difference when one actually knew most of the guests and wasn’t stuck being a wallflower, not knowing anyone. Such was the case at this particular party. John had insisted that she go, and had even had a new gown created for her – a beautiful deep burgundy garment, far finer than anything she had worn to any of the parties her parents had thrown before they died. And even though she wouldn’t admit it, it was nice dress up for a change. Not that she particularly cared if any men appreciated it, she merely didn’t want to look like a fish out of water, nor did she want to let her brother down by her appearance. For although she didn’t always feel particularly fond of John, he was still her brother, and she still loved and respected him. And it would most certainly not do for Lady Shilston to be seen at a fashionable court party in a gown which was both nondescript in comparison, and out of fashion. It felt strange for Grace to be caring about such things, but that was what court did to you, she supposed.

Gladly accepting a cup of mulled wine from a passing servant, Grace sipped the warming drink appreciatively as she watched the dancers swirling around the floor. They were beautiful, and a small part of her wished she could join them. She was once a very adept dancer, although she had not had the chance to do it in quite some time. It would be interesting to see if she still possessed the skills she had when she was younger.

Grace was so distracted by the dancers, she did not notice a man approach her, and she jumped slightly as she heard someone addressing her. She turned to see a dashing gentleman, wearing a rather ostentatious, but nonetheless elegant outfit, bowing to her.

She dropped a curtsey. “My Lord,” she said respectfully. “That is indeed very kind of you, but I would not want to distract you from anything more important than keeping a wallflower such as myself company.” She smiled at him. “Lady Grace Shilston. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
