December 1511 Once upon a time, a common messenger would have found John Shilston relatively... not busy. But today, the knight actually waved the boy off as soon as he came through the doors. In his other hand was a colorful quill, scribbling wildly as he finished a letter. Much to his displeasure, the messenger hadn't turned and left like he was expected to. "Sir Shilston, Lady Grace has arrived and settled in." John sighed, having almost forgotten about the woman he'd summoned. Running a hand over his face, the knight stood from his table and nodded plainly to the messenger. "Right, then." He said breathlessly, sighing again before finally leaving his chambers. John tried not to think too much as he made his way through Court. The messenger soon caught up to him, taking lead and guiding him to her doors. For the last time he waved the boy off, lifting a fist to the wood only when the servant had departed. Hardly giving her the time to answer his quick knock, John breached the doors and entered her rooms as if he'd done it thousands of times before. "Grace." He said sharply, crossing the floor with plain, though purposeful steps. His eyes surveyed immediately what was his sister, upholding stoicism as she morphed from his twelve year old sister to this grown, mature woman. John swallowed, dipping his head. "I hope you didn't forget anything," he spoke, taking a brief glance around her room. "Or maybe I do.." he sighed, noticing how.. mere her things seemed. "Must you be so homely?" John shook his head. "You are in His Majesty's Court now. I will have new dresses made for you, and perhaps I'll send for mother's jewels in South Hampton. Our aunt managed to get a hold of them, I do believe." The knight could have groaned at his sister. "But nonetheless.." he went on, suddenly moving to close the distance between them. "It is nice to see you." He presented her a rare, warm smile and opened his arms to embrace her if only for a moment. "You look well. Perhaps it won't be so hard to find you a husband after all." He grinned, ignoring her obvious displeasure with the idea. |

Despite all of Grace’s initial misgivings, she couldn’t help but feel a little thrill of excitement when she arrived at the King’s court. The palace was beautiful, as where the people who occupied it. Beautiful ladies and handsome gentlemen wandered around, all dressed in the finest clothes Grace had ever seen. Thinking back on it as she unpacked her belongings in the room which had been given to her, she realised that she wouldn’t fit in at court at all. Her finest gown was similar to what some of these ladies wore on a daily basis, so it seemed. Grace had never truly taken an interest in the finery which many ladies preferred, but now it was starting to seem like a good idea to pay attention to the fashions of the court, if even just a little. As she was musing over this, she heard the expected knock at the door. She barely had time to call “Come in”, before the door opened and her older brother strode in. His brusque greeting didn’t surprise her – she had known that their reunion wouldn’t be anything emotional or affectionate. Still, she smiled at him warmly. “John,” she said with another smile, taking in his appearance. He had changed again since she had last seen him, and was most definitely a man now. Still her brother though, and some things didn’t change, she mused, suppressing a grin as he berated her for being too ‘homely’, as he put it. “Homely, John?” she said with an amused smile. “But home is where I have just come from, do you expect any different?” Her keen eyes took in his fine clothes. “Nonetheless, I would not wish to show you up. I shall have to don my finer gowns until you have some more made.”She gave him a brief smile. “Thank you.” To her surprise, John suddenly relaxed and gave her one of his rare smiles as he crossed the room to embrace her. She smiled as she returned the gesture. “It is good to see you, brother,” she said with a smile. “I don’t suppose it surprises you to learn that it was insufferably dull at home without you.” His comment about finding her a husband caused her smile to slip slightly. “Come John, why do you suppose any man would wish to marry me? At least allow me to become accustomed to life at court before you start combing the court for a man who would come anywhere near me, never mind marry me.” She gave him an appeasing smile. Hopefully he wouldn’t expect too much of her at once – not when she was undergoing such a drastic change in her life. |

Nearly his entire life John had paid little mind to his sisters. They were there at the dinner table every night, there to make fun of or playfully kick beneath the wood. Grace, being the youngest, had been the vague member of the family. And John, sent to Court when she was only six, Grace just seemed to be someone for his mother and father to worry about. But being her brother, John still held a natural love and affection for her. And now, she deserved whatever best he, as Sir Shilston, could give her. Parts of their reputation depended on it. "You knew once mother and father died that your days in Lavenham were limited." He ignored her obvious distaste with leaving the town, and being stubborn as he was, he knew soon she would come to love Court as a proper Lady should. He stood out prominently in her chambers, though he was pleased to see she had been accustomed so. Perhaps, once he had found his triumph in this business with the Duke of Buckingham, he would see to it she had even larger chambers. "And now time won't be so insufferably dull." He smirked, lifting a single brow. "...never mind marry me." John's expression folded into displeasure, disapproval and sheer disappointment. He shook his head and slowly turned his back from her, quickly glancing about the room to see if she had had any wine set about. Seeing none, he sighed in mild annoyance and sat himself in the nearest chair. "No one will want you now, Grace. But once you have learned the ways of Court, how to carry yourself as a proper courtier of His Majesty, then perhaps you will have numerous admirers." He smiled then, though his bored eyes still said otherwise. "Watch closely, listen intently, and remember everything. Keep your mind sharp but tongue soft. Learn from those who have an educated mind, and keep your knowledge only to yourself. Nothing is worse than a woman with a tongue and no control, but I will not have my sister a dullard. You will be an intelligent woman, Grace, but others will think you are but a woman of gentility and modesty." His eyelids narrowed, bringing a hand to his chin and resting it contemplatively over his mouth. "Do you understand?" |
