December 1511 Despite the freezing cold, the whipping chilly winds, William Parr felt the need to get the hell out of the claustrophobic atmosphere of Hampton Court. Remembering various joking talks he had had with his friend John Dudley, he took the other man aside during dinner in the great hall, explaining his genius idea of the two to get the hell out and enjoy each other's company. He was just surprised when John said yes, considering he meant go into the city and drink too much. "Sick of your wife, now, are you?" he had laughed, punching his friend in the arm before going away to socialize, pondering where they would go. He had not actually been into the city of London in quite some time, definitely not when it was this cold outside, so cold they had to wear heavy cloaks over their fine clothes as they rode from Hampton Court to the barges that would take them into the city. There was a little place many of the courtiers and nobility frequented in London, a tavern he had been to before, but not in months considering William had been rather busy between his sisters, his horrific wife, and his mistress who he admittedly wanted as his wife. "I've not been here in ages, it seems, so if it is horrible, we can go somewhere else," he declared as he hopped off the barge from the water, tossing the man a few coins as thanks. "Funny I've not frequented these places as of late when I used to often. It's my sisters, they would die if they knew I was out here with you. I have better things to do with my time now." As William led the two into the quiet tavern, glad it was fairly empty and those faces he did see were of other courtiers who'd had the same idea, he turned to his friend. "Still happy? I'm very surprised you're here with me when you could be enjoying yourself," he teased, enjoying mocking John for his insane devotion to his wife which in William's eyes was utterly ridiculous. God, he needed this: to get out, to laugh, enjoy himself, rather than mope about in his apartments or complain eagerly to his sisters about his life when they needed him to help them with theirs. "Glad you've come, though, I assume we do have a bit to catch up on, eh?" |

John never knew that he could be so responsible, or at least feel that way. Reckoning accounts, trying to keep his brother from dipping into the wealth that Catherine brought in their marriage, and now the arrival of one Jane Guildford... Perhaps it was his imagination, but some of his hairs looked rather dull. And so, when his dear friend William Parr asked him to go into the city to drink, he accepted and met the comment about his wife with a roll of his eyes and a smile. William was just busting his chops, he was sure, and John had a servitor convey the message to his wife that he was going into London with Essex that evening, and that he loved her. The last time John had been in London was on the occasion of the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk. A little smile danced upon his lips as he remembered his inebriated wife pulling out her hair pins and then marching off to the gardens. "Anywhere is more than satisfactory at the moment." John assured his friend. They could have gone to the most low and filthy tavern in London; John didn't quite care at the moment -- All that mattered was that he was going to have a good time with his friend, a much needed good time. "Your sisters are too hard upon you; certainly the good Lord Essex is able to enjoy himself once in a while and act customary to his youth." John grinned. He had heard whispers of the names of William's sisters, and he was sure his friend needed a night of strong drink more than he. John had a wife who seemed very self-sufficient and steadfast if left to her own devices; John wasn't sure the same could be said of the Parr sisters. Of course, he would strike down anyone who said the thought aloud if William didn't first, and he new that rumors were rumors, but still... John sat upon one of the stools inside the tavern once the door was shut, sighing in relief, and then he chuckled. "Spending time with you, dear friend, is a different kind of pleasure." John teased right back. "And one that I have not indulged in for quite some time; nor you." He nodded at William's statement about catching up, and flagged down the bar-tend. "You asked me out tonight, My Lord, and so I shall give you the pleasure of starting with whatever is on your mind." |

"Ah-ha!" William spoke as if greatly amused by the comment from his friend. "So you think I will tell you of all my petty problems. I am sure you have heard the most of it from other ears, all of it true despite the gossips we have at court. It seems I am quite popular with how I hear my...situation is talked about." He did not sound very pleased by this, considering he believed he was mocked behind his back: the man who couldn't keep his wife, the man whose stupid wife came back to cleave him to her, even though everyone knew their hatred of each other. "Anyhow, this trip is not for me to gripe about my stupid concerns, but for us to just talk, as it used to be before we were always so busy. I like being occupied; but I don't think I like it this much. I barely snatch time with my sisters, considering Anne is serving the Princess Mary, and Kate the Queen. I hope to God my mother doesn't decide to come upon a visit. She would be most distressed that the three of us would all but ignore her. Of course," he continued with a wry little smile, "we do tear up her insistent missives, so it is just like ignoring her." This was a nice interlude, something different, the kind of thing William was introduced to when he came to court as a younger man, dragged out with older men. He had been shocked, considering his upbringing with his nose in books all day, but enjoyed it none-the-less. Drinking was a favorite past-time at court; same as debauchery, gambling, things of that nature he was also fond of like most men. He just hadn't thought John who had somehow turned out a responsible married man would have come out to enjoy himself frivolously like in the past. "I am surprised you are here, admittedly, with how little we see of each other; how busy I am sure you are. I have heard our only purpose is to enhance His Majesty's many entertainments, but my God, the moment one gets a place on the Privy Council it seems the entire world turns upside down once your voice is important." He shook his head. "It's why I say nothing. I don't want someone thinking I know what I am talking about when I am about men such as the Duke of Norfolk, others who know far more than I about power and politics." He leaned back in his seat, inclining his head thankfully to a man who brought them both ale. Not like the fine wine at court; this would easily make anyone tipsy, though that wasn't exactly William's intention. Just a night out with a friend was all he wanted. "Did I tell you, my sister Anne is to wed the Marquess of Powis? She is to be a Marchioness. Higher in rank than I; quite disturbing, that," he said with a laugh, though there was something off in it. "I am not quite happy about it. Something about him I don't like. She ran off to be with him in Wales. Imagine what I think she did there. Glad the man will marry her so she doesn't ruin herself running off after anyone else... and I thought she was sensible, like Katherine..." |

A smile stretched John's lips at his friend's demeanor. "You need someone to be your agony aunt, William, and since you have no wife to do so, I am your best option, and I bear the responsibility gladly." If Will could tease him, John would certainly tease him right back. "And if nothing else, I would rather trust my friend than the rumors floating about court. I've known you too long to not give you the due respect of hearing truth from your mouth than listening to lies from others." Court was full of gossiping harpies and fiends. John did his best to ignore it, or at least most of it. "I confess I didn't think our lives would change so drastically, nor in such every day ways. If I am not attending to business concerning the Privy Council, I am locked away with my finances, and if not that, I am attending to Catherine. It is a marvel that I sleep and eat at all, and an even grander one that you and I now have this small freedom tonight." He nodded at his words concerning Norfolk. "His Grace's wisdom is great. I hope to learn from him so that some day I should be able to advise His Majesty in such a manner if asked, not that I would be presumptuous of the honor." The bottom of the flagon of ale scraped from the wooden table as John dipped his nose into it, taking a long swallow of the simple drink. His lips smacked lightly and his eyes glittered. "She shall be higher than I as well, if that thought pleases you Will." He chuckled. Little Anne Parr, a Marchioness... Fancy that. As he listened to what could have been the reason behind it, his eyes grew troubled. "You have my respect, Will. If anyone had the opportunity to do that with Elizabeth, I should have throttled them senseless. You have a stronger wit and mind and resolution than I do." He raised his flagon to his friend and took another sip. "At least we both have one honorable sibling among the others. Andrew..." John sighed, wondering if this would be frowned upon. They were to talk, weren't they? "Andrew is certainly cause for me to want to escape court for the night with an old friend." John smiled at Will, deciding to put it as gently as that. He took another sip of ale, before deciding he should slow down. "Drink up, my friend, drink up." |
