Mary could do nothing but stare at him. Once she dreamt of those same lips, thinking there was paradise and happiness in them, but all she felt now was emptiness. Sweeping her finger across her lips as though it would rid her of the memory, she felt tears welling up in her eyes. It made her feel cheap like nothing else. Even if he had no soul or heart for himself, he had no right to take either of hers. Pressing her lips together, she stepped back a few steps. "What are you thinking?" she demanded. "I am not to be swayed by your mouth, Henry Percy! How dare you think it would fix anything. How dare you think I would easily yield to you." She didn't know if he thought any of those things and assumed he likely didn't, but she was filling with anger and shame. She promised herself she would never ever let any person take her lips without permission. Her betrothed or not, he had overstepped his bounds and she - Slap. And she had just slapped him, open palm. |
