*Early-December 1511* What Alison was doing outside during winter was beyond her. She didn’t like the colder months, simply because it meant little time outdoors. But she was going outside, no matter what today. She wanted to paint, or she wanted to ride, but she couldn’t very well do both now could she? Well maybe she could go for a ride and pack her painting equipment with her, but she didn’t want to go too far away, so painting it was. Wanting to be alone, she refused any help from her servants and gathered her easel and canvas under one arm and held the rest of her equipment paints and brushes in a satchel that she had slung over her shoulder. She probably should have asked for assistance with transporting her belongings, because as soon as she took a step outside, she wondered how exactly she was meant to carry a wet painting back up to her room. This weather wasn’t too good for the paint anyway, but once she had it in a warm room, it should dry then. Bulked up for the colder weather, she trudged along, carrying probably a bit too much that a noblewoman should. Despite winter starting, there was still hardly any snow, (if it were going to be cold enough for snow in the first place). There were a few white patches of snow or frost and this is what Alison wanted to paint. It would make for a good scenery setting for a painting with the trees looking dead and the ground coated lightly with snow and frost. She could add more snow if she felt like it too and make the piece hers, rather than just something that she copied from the world. Her mind began to wander as she made her way to the river Thames. Already she could picture what she could do with the painting, even add a little more fiction to it than normal. Would that be frowned upon though for her creativity to run wild? So lost in her mind she was, she didn’t see a root of a tree sticking up in her path and she tripped. Instinct took over and she reached her hand out to stop her fall, but in doing so, she dropped all her painting supplies. Her hand missed the tree though and she went down with her equipment. She huffed as she sat there amongst her belongings, maybe coming outside was a bad idea after all. (hope you can work with it XD ) |

Charles cursed quietly to himself as he shuffled though the snow. He absolutely loathed winter. Hated it with a passion. Then again, who was fond of it? Bitter cold, snow, ice. There wasn't much to like. But of course, simply because he wasn't fond of the season didn't mean that he could refuse all other responsibility, and take time off from November until February. It didn't work like that. The Turner family still needed to be support, and given his father's current state of health, it was still up to Charles to provide for his mother and sister. As he walked, Charles found his mind reverting back to them as it often did. He missed his family, and saw them a lot less than he would have liked. Even lesser did he see Alice and Catherine, following their marriages. He was thankful that he worked alongside Catherine's husband, and was often privy to various involvements of hers and their daughter, his niece, Mary, but it still wasn't the same as seeing her in person. Charles was so caught up in thoughts involving his family, that he almost didn't notice the young woman trudging through the snow, clutching what appeared to be a painting easel and canvas. She was pretty, that much was obvious. Brunette, seemingly close to his age and...and in the snow. One minute she had been walking toward him, determination clearly painted on her face, and the next she was in the snow, surrounded by her belongings. Charles raised an eyebrow. He hadn't even seen her fall, it had been that fast. Or perhaps he was an arrogant pig who had been thinking of nothing but her appearance. Or both. Either way, uneducated or not, Charles knew it was improper to leave a young women stranded there in the snow. "Are you alright?" he called, moving toward her. Standing over her, he held out a hand. "'Ere, 'lemme help you up." |

Even sitting there, Alison had the urge to just lay back and rest for a while; at least it would be relaxing. Though, already she could feel the cold seeping up from the snow and she didn’t like it one bit. Wincing at the thought of digging her hands into the snow to push herself up, she sat there for a moment longer as she decided how was the best way to get up in a lady-like manner. The more she thought about it, the more she realised that nothing about it would be lady-like; then again a lady wouldn’t have trudged out here in the snow and fallen over in the first place. Just as she was about to give up, she was saved. She hadn’t really noticed the man until he had called out to her. Her response to his question was frustration. Of course she wasn’t alright, what a silly thing to ask. But then Alison took in the man now before her, he was wearing commoner clothing, and he wasn’t laughing at her, which was the only reason why she didn’t snap at him. There was no point making a fuss about it, he wanted to help and proving this was probably the only lady-like way to get off the ground, she accepted (despite her not liking the need for her to accept a man’s assistance). She took his hand and allowed her to be pulled up, letting go of his hand as soon as she found her feet and straightened her skirts. She gave him a nod. “Thank you.” She didn’t know what else to say to him, though he being a servant stopped her from running from his presence. Pausing for a brief moment, she went about gathering her belongings, more importantly, checking to see if any of her brushes or paints had spilled out from her satchel. Certain that all was in order; she slid the strap onto her shoulder, before picking up her canvas. She glanced over at her saviour. “Are you working in the Palace?” Now it was Alison’s turn to ask a silly question, of course he would be working there, but she hoped he would elaborate; for she wondered what exactly it was he did. |

Charles hadn't even begun to comprehend why on earth a woman of her social status would be out in the snow in the first place. When he helped her up, he came to the realization that maybe she wasn't as pleased with this apparent rescue as he would have thought. She wore a stiff look of indifference on her face as she straightened her skirts, and went about gathering her belongings. Charles wasn't entirely familiar with the equipment involved in painting. He had obviously never come into close contact with an easel before, he it made him feel even more inferior than he already was, making even more obvious what a handicap never having recieved a formal education could be. Just as he was about to ask her about them, to further his knowledge on what making a painting actually involved, she was turning to him instead, politely asking if he worked in the palace. "Yeah," Charles replied, nodding. "In the kitchen mostly, cleanin' an' stuff. But I do what they need me to do. Tasks vary." Well, most days anyway. Today he had been debating returning home for a time, but hadn't had the courage. Leaving the palace on a day he didn't have off would be costly, and he needed this job. His family needed him to have this job. He scuffed his feet in the snow, then glanced back up at his companion's face. "What are you doin' outside, then?" He nodded at her canvas. "Paintin'?" |

Once Alison had gathered her belongings, she glanced at the servant and realised that she should give him a break, he had helped her after all. She smiled softly as he spoke. There were so many servants running around the Palace that it was hard to place him in her mind as she tried to remember if she had seen him before. But then if he stuck close to the kitchens, then it would be rare to see him at all. She gave him another smile, softening to him, as she should have realised commoner men were different to noblemen, at least with commoners she couldn’t be made to marry them, or so she thought. She nodded. “Yes, and maybe…could you help me?” She gestured to the easel still lying in the snow and then held out her canvas, but paused. “That’s if you don’t mind and if your free?” Having a servant with her was probably a better choice than to trying to carry everything herself. “I think I’ll need help carrying it back too, I really didn’t think about it at all, hence why I ended up in the snow in the first place.” She gave him another smile with a hint of a smirk, before she added. “You could watch me paint, if you like.” Then suddenly remembering her manners – even if he were a servant than he still might need to know her name – she dipped her head slightly. “I’m Lady Alison Clifford, but you can call me Alison if you like. I never much liked the properness of it all and what shall your name be?” |

Charles smiled as he watched his companion's face soften. She was rather pretty, he decided, and most certainly wouldn't object seeing her again, if the option became available to him. When she asked if he was able to assist her, Charles was quick to agree. "'Course I coul' help you," he said. "Wouldn' wan' you havin' to carry all this yourself." He reached out and gently took the canvas from her hands, tucking it under his arm. "Yeah, I'd like tha'. Never really been aroun' paintin' things before. Not tha' I had the chance before." That was borderline asking for self pity, something that Charles absolutely loathed. There was no way he was going to let this woman feel sorry for him. "Not tha' I mind," he added. "I mean, it's jus' a new experience s'all." He nodded himself. "Lady Alison...er, Alison," he repeated. The sound of her first name alone on his tongue felt terribly awkward, but he supposed he could get used to it. "I'm Charles Turner. Please' to meet you." |

Alison smiled, glad he could help her, and she didn’t want to put him out of his way – even though it was a servant’s job to assist the nobles. Alison didn’t like to see it that way; it was a servant who helped her explore her curiosity with her attraction to the same sex, but even before then she had tried to treat servants as she wished to be treated. Isn’t that what the Bible said? But yet here they were with people with hierarchy hanging over their heads and not everyone was treated fairly. She believed the men of God had tainted the words of the Bible to suit themselves, which is probably why she didn’t like them much at all. She smiled wider at Charles as he spoke of never having the opportunity to paint or even being around someone who could. She saw him not as a man that she loathed, but someone to enjoy company with. She did feel a little of pity for him, but then she felt more pity for herself, at least common folk had more freedom than she, it was just her luck that her mother had little intention to marry her off, if her mother were anyone else, she would be doomed to marry someone she didn’t like (which was like all candidates since she had a thing about men, more importantly noblemen). Alison almost grinned when Charles called her by her name alone, it was easy for another noble to do, but for a servant? It must be killing him, but he obliged. She could have hugged him at that moment; she could see a good friend in him. As she opened up to him more and more, she curtsied for him, a smirk across her lips said she was already having fun with him, yet she wasn’t mocking him at all. “It is a pleasure to meet you, Mr Turner…Charles” She almost giggled at how silly she was being, what on Earth was wrong with her? As she motioned for him to follow, she continued on to the edge of the river, finding a bench that had a good view of the river. “Maybe I could teach you to paint…or is there something else you would rather learn?” |

Charles followed behind Alison, carrying her canvas. He smiled to himself, thinking back to a few moments ago when she had curtsied to him, obviously pleased that he had called her by her name alone, leaving out her title. Never in his life had Charles been curtsied to by anyone, let alone a woman of nobility. He was a servant. A commoner. Nothing more. He had only done what had been asked of him, for that was his job. Whatever name Alison had given, he would have called her that, but she seemed pleased all the same. For that, Charles was thankful. It was a rare occurrence that he had impressed an upper class woman doing something other than standing there. They cared about little more than his appearance, as had become apparent during his time at the palace. The fact that Alison seemed to care about something else was rather refreshing. When she asked if he would like to learn how to paint, Charles wasn't sure how to respond. He doubted he would be any good, and there would be little opportunity hereafter for him to exercise his skill, but still it would be fun... "No," he said, quietly. "No, I'd like to jus' watch you for awhile. If you don' mind." |

At least glad that he was following her, Alison smiled and tucked a stray strand of her hair behind her ear once they had reached their destination. Alison had always been careful not to make herself too appealing to a nobleman, so mostly she preferred to have her hair pinned up as if she were already married. It was ideal too, to keep her hair out of her way, especially when she wanted to do things like paint. She nodded at his refusal, but still felt a little rejected. Maybe eventually she would find things that he did want to learn, because she had the right mind to teach someone and already she was planning another meeting with the servant. But without letting her feelings known, she smiled softly. “As you wish.” Once she had decided where she wanted to set up her easel, she took this and the canvas from him and went about setting up. Before long, she was already in a creative mood, lost to all that was around her. Her mind in a daydream, but she soon remembered him and smiled as she took a seat on the bench and pointed at the place beside her with the end of her brush. “You can sit there if you like.” Not wanting to sit in the cold for too long, she went to work, immediately working on the background and sketching out the outline of her main point of view. Already she could see the painting in her mind, but she was going to add more than just the landscape. She started on the trees and then the river itself, but she left a small area above the river blank, leaving it for something she had in mind later when the painting was near completion. As she worked, her eyes were darting to the scenery before her and back to the canvas, but then as if she had two minds, one set on painting and the other on him, she glanced to the side and smirked lightly. “Maybe sometime, you will let me paint you. I rarely get to use a model. And I will pay you for it of course.” |

Charles stood alongside the bench and watched Alison sit on the bench. He shifted his feet uncomfortably, not knowing what he should do next. Technically, he was working. Providing Alison service was his job, as pathetic as that was. When she asked him if he'd like to sit down, Charles didn't really know how to react. Throughout his life, Charles had never really been asked what he wanted. He was always forced to go along with what other people wanted. Hesitantly, he sank onto the bench beside her, and just sat, watching her paint for awhile. A sort of concentration had come over her face as she occasional glanced up to survey the landscape before dipping her brush into the paint once more, sweeping it over the canvas. Slowly, an image began to appear. It was, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating things Charles had ever had the opportunity to witness. Alison looked so...so content. So happy. It made him jealous, in a sense. Charles wished he could find something, a hobby, like that. Where he could just lose himself, and forget about the rest of the world. When she suddenly turned to him, asking if he would model for her sometime, Charles couldn't help but jump. They had sat in silence for so long, it came as a surprise. Model for her? That was something Charles had never been asked before, without a doubt. "Well," he said, "I dunno, Alison. Maybe." He thought about it for another second, before solidifying an answer in his mind. "Well, I 'spose. I never go' painte' before. I don' know how to model." |

Alison smiled at Charles’ discomfort; normally it was she who would be in discomfort, especially when in company of a man. And now that she had relaxed in his presence she had the strange urge to hug him. She thought him adorable, especially when she was putting him into a situation that was making him uncomfortable, which she honestly was not doing on purpose. She hoped he would relax soon, because his restlessness could be contagious. She felt like a mother with a restless child and she knowing that she would hope the child will behave otherwise it would disrupt her, but Charles was nothing of a child. He knew his place as a servant (which is why he was so uncomfortable in the first place) and he would have admiration for her work, while a child may not. As she waited Charles to give her an answer about being her model, she returned to her painting, while still giving him a little of her attention. Even though she was so absorbed in her painting and that he would be used to being ignored by a noble, she still didn’t want to seem rude. It would be bad for her to be rude to a new friend that she may have made. She almost laughed at his answer, pausing her painting to give him her full attention. Instead of laughing at him, she just smiled and dabbed a dot of paint onto his nose. “Well you wouldn’t have to do much, Charles, just sit there.” |
