Years from now, there will be little to be known about me, I am sure. For now, though, I am content with my life. I was born Margaret Spencer, the second and last child of Sir Robert Spencer and his wife, Eleanor Beaufort. My elder sister, Catherine, and I were schooled in everything a young lady should know including sewing, embroidery, dancing, music and riding. Our mother also instructed us in how to manage our own household and be a wife. If we make any mistakes doing any of what she taught us, we had to do it until we got it right and once we got it right, we had to do it five times. If we failed, we had to do it again. She was strict and sometimes we despised her for it. As a mother now, I understand where she was coming from.

Catherine never excelled, but was married to Henry Percy, the Earl of Northumberland. I was mad with jealousy as I felt, though I was not the eldest, I was better equipped to be a Countess. I saw a lot in quiet contemplation and embroidery where she thrived with music and hunting. I suppose, in many ways, Catherine was what I myself aspired to be. Through my jealousy of her elevated status, I hoped to be like her. As I grew older and closer to my own marriage, I realized that Catherine blossomed in her new position. We have become much closer and due to that, I have gotten to know her children, my nephews and nieces whom I adore as much as my own children.

In 1490, I married Sir Thomas Carey and we have had eight children. I tease Catherine and Henry about this, saying that he should have married me as she only gave him five. Both of them brush this off and Catherine smiles at me, thinking me always as her silly sister. Thomas often gives me a look and tells me I should conduct myself more properly, but he knows that I will never say or do things that could besmirch my reputation or that of my family. As the sister of the Countess of Northumberland, I find that there is equal pressure put on me. In my thirty-nine years, I have shied away from any opportunies to partake in any dalliances.

Of course, it is not just because of my family that I don't do such things. It is because Thomas and I have enjoyed a wonderful marriage. He is attentive and respectful, though I know he has taken a few mistresses. But I do not blame him for he always returns to me and it is normally when I have been great with child. My children, specifically my son William, have expressed distaste in this. William believes wholly in the sanctity of marriage and is easily my favourite though I try my best not to treat him differently than the others. Two of my daughters have entered nunneries and are far from me. The rest of my children are trying to establish lives for themselves at court and I do my best to govern them toward great things. I do not forget my ties to the royal line and feel that I, as well as my children, should always remember it.

I conduct myself in a way that I know sometimes seems as though I am arrogant. I do not, for even a moment, say that I do not look down on others. It comes with being who I am and who I am related to. I try to be kind to those around me, but it is easy to become swept up in intrigue and all that comes with that. I enjoy gossip so that I will often go searching for it. It would be easy to know all if I was one of the Queen's ladies, but my time to be a lady-in-waiting has long past me.

That isn't to say that I think of myself as an old woman. I am an able-bodied woman of a certain age. I use my experiences and what I know of my mother's experiences, as well as my sister's, to steer my children in directions I feel will benefit them. I do not meddle, merely suggest, though my children may say otherwise. It doesn't matter to me what they say, though, as I will do what I will as the matriarch of the Carey family and a loving aunt of the Percy family.
