![]() THOMAS CROMWELL ![]() * Wish I may Wish I might Have this I wish tonight Are you satisfied? Dig for gold Dig for fame You dig to make your name Are you pacified? . HEY THERE. THE NAME IS BRANDY, AND I AM OKAY, I'M OLD. BUT I'M ONLY AS OLD AS I FEEL!. I'VE BEEN ROLEPLAYING FOR ABOUT A BAZILLION MILLION YEARS AND MY OTHER CHARACTERS WOULD BE CATHERINE HOWARD, JOYCE HOWARD, LETTICE KNOLLYS, EDWARD SEYMOUR, AND CARDINAL THOMAS WOLSEY. I FOUND FKAC AT THIS ALTERNATE DIMENSION THAT SELLS FANCY CAKES. OH, BY THE WAY, I READ THE RULES. WANT PROOF? THE CODE WORD IS PUMPERNICKEL BABY. WANT TO REACH ME? HERE'S MY IM: ASK AND YE SHALL RECEIVE In the year of Our Lord, 1511 To whom it could possibly concern, As I sit here, writing by the glowing light of the candles, it is impressed upon me to tell the story of my life. I am not sure who would want to know my story, but I shall go ahead and start as any story should...at the beginning. I was born in the year of Our Lord 1485 in Putney, to my father, Walter Cromwell, who is a clothworker, a blacksmith, and an alehouse keeper/brewer; my mother died in childbirth with me and my father rarely spoke of her. He was known for drunken and rather boorish behavior, and it was a constant thing to receive near-daily beatings from him. The Cromwells were not well thought of, and I swore that I would never end up like my father...I would make the Cromwell name a name the people would come to respect, and I would do whatever I had to do to make it so. I took a series of menial jobs as soon as I was old enough to work and saved enough money to where I could travel out of England and gain the respect I so longed for. The long road started in Florence, where I was employed by the Frescobaldis, a rather powerful family who was involved in banking and the making of fine Tuscan wine, when I was about sixteen, seventeen years of age. My travels carried me to the clerical trade in the Netherlands, where I was involved in the cloth trade. I also was an agent for Cardinal Reginald Bainbridge in Rome, and was involved in handling ecclesiastical issues before the Papal Rota. This prompted my love for the law of God and man, but moreso for the law of man. I wished to study law, and His Eminence made it so, funding my education to where I could study law. When he passed in 1509, I saw no reason to stay in Rome and traveled back to England, now with impressive credits to my name. I worked as a lawyer for two years before my talents became noticed by one of the highest religious and political names in all of England, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. He trusted me enough with important ecclesiastical business...what he saw as important ecclesiastical business, anyhow. It consisted of dissolving monasteries and Wolsey using the money to line his own pockets and fund his grammar school in Ipswich. This bothered me, for I always thought men of the cloth were supposed to take vows of poverty, chastity, and obediance. Apparently the red robes the cardinal wore was all a cover for his infinite greed. It made me curious about this "new religion" I've been hearing so much about...where God was everywhere, and there was no need to ever confess to a priest. In secret, I shall try to study further, for this religion seems the path to true salvation. Now, where was I? Oh, yes. I was also appointed to Gray's Inn, and while I continue to work for Cardinal Wolsey, I seek ways to gain my own foothold at Hampton Court and bring myself into His Majesty's good graces. My dearest hope is to be completely trusted by His Majesty, much like he trusts Wolsey. The only problem is, Wolsey will have to be dethroned for me to achieve this hope. I am simply a layman; I have no power to uproot one of the most powerful men in England. I shall have to wait for a more powerful man to do it for me, and I am sure it will happen soon. Respectfully yours, Thomas Cromwell Post scriptum: There are some other addendums I feel you may wish to know about me; these are the whispers about court concerning my character and qualities. I heartily disagree with the negative comments; I'm more inclined toward the positive. Most call me ruthless and ambitious, an opportunist...the type of man that is motivated merely by financial gain. In short, they say I will do whatever it takes to get ahead in court, no matter what I have to do or who I have to hurt in the process. This is simply not true! I am a kind man, a decent man and loyal to my friends. Every man here at court looks to better himself and his lot in life, whether they be layman or gentry. I would do anything I could for His Majesty...whatever is in the best interest for him and for England. I am sure that in these instances, I can be seen as ruthless, without heart, soul, or conscience. In matters such as these and in matters of the law, you cannot AFFORD to have a heart, a soul, or a conscience. When men break the law, they have to pay the consequences. I also feel I am quite adequate in terms of government and the law for I have spent many years studying it. If I may be so bold, I feel I am on an even level or perhaps even better than Sir Thomas More. No one has a better love for affairs of state, the government, and the law than I do. Last addendum...I am fluent in three languages: Latin, French, and Italian. |
