Having been brought up from a young age in and around court, his primary objective has always been to be a companion for the Tudor Princes – primarily Henry. Having had no family that he can really recall – with his mother having died in childbirth and his father having died shortly thereafter – he has no loyalties save for those to the crown of England. He is completely at the beck and call of his majesty (granted, who isn’t?) and he does so willingly. This incredible loyalty and willingness to be something of a shadow to Henry, whenever the young king wishes such a thing, has gone well for him over the years. Now the Duke of Suffolk, he has plenty to show for all the years of loyalty.
Intelligent, Charles understands the ways of court, the ways of the world, and isn’t afraid to use this knowledge to his advantage. However, intelligent does not equal wise, and he has made more than his share of questionable decisions. Luckily, he has the friendship of the king and this has, particularly in his youth, allowed him to get away with some things that perhaps might have come with heavier consequences had he been a nobody. He can read and write well, has a good head for maths, and can speak near fluent French.
He’s always up for something fun, particularly something that requires physical strength and ability. He likes riding, jousting, racing, hunting, wrestling and so forth. He prides himself on being strong and fit and takes care to keep himself trim. Coupled with his athletic nature, he can be competitive and strong willed; he dislikes losing and dislikes being made a fool or made out as weak or unable to accomplish whatever he sets his mind to accomplish.
A flirt at court, Charles has something of a reputation for liking the ladies a little too much. However, he’s not charming only with the ladies but also with most anyone who isn’t on his bad side. He doesn’t strive to make enemies and would rather conduct his day to day affairs in the most peaceful way possible. He can be good company and doesn’t generally seek to manipulate or underhand anyone – though if it were necessary, he’d not hesitate.
- - - - - Family Members,
FATHER, William Brandon {deceased} MOTHER, Elizabeth Bryun {deceased} BROTHER, William Brandon {deceased} SISTER, Anne Brandon {married to Sir John Shilston} - - - - Overall History, Despite having what might initially have been felt an unlucky lot in life, Charles Brandon has managed to succeed all the more for the losses he endured in his childhood. Fortunately, as he was so young, he does not remember with much clarity what it was like to have an actual family and so he cannot long for it.
He was born the second son and third child of William Brandon and Elizabeth Bryun. Elizabeth Bryun was the daughter and heiress of Sir Henry Bryun of South Ockendon in Essex. He had an older brother, William named for his father and an older sister, Anne. His father, unlike his past family members who were content with a quieter sort of cautionary life, had political ambitions. When there was an attempt by the Duke of Gloucester to seize the throne, William and his younger brother Thomas lent their support to Henry Tudor, then the Earl of Richmond. However this required them to leave England, for their safety, and it was while William was away that Elizabeth realized her pregnancy.
Charles’ father died at Bosworth Field in support of Henry Tudor – it was rumoured that he was killed by Richard III himself. This was a great honour, and the little boy, along with his siblings, was the recipient of the then King Henry’s affections due to the sacrifice of his father for the crown. His mother, Elizabeth, died shortly after giving birth to Charles in October of 1489, leaving him orphaned and in the care of his grandfather – who died early on in Charles’ childhood. This resulted in the sending of the children to court as was customary, though slightly odd in his case as he was not the heir to any great title or fortune. He was very young, at this point, and as a child with no parents to lead or guide him but instead tutors and servants and other such persons to govern him and teach him, he was quite unsure of himself for the beginning of his time at court.
Charles quickly adapted to the changes in his life however, as he was given a role that he quite enjoyed. Playmate to the young princes. He was a social, quick learning and ever gracious friend, most loyal to both the older and the younger for the two princes. But while he served both of them equally, his favour did lie in Prince Henry whose temperament was more to his own liking. He followed without question or qualm, doing whatever he was asked and instructed to do. He found great amusement and benefit in being close, personal friend of the wayward prince and found it far more fun to be around the carefree Henry than the contentious and ever responsible Arthur. As he grew from an orphaned, uncertain child to an outgoing, self-assured youth, he had no difficulty attracting the attention of the ladies around him.
When Arthur was married, Charles was aware of Henry’s jealousy of the young man’s wife. Charles, ever loyal to Henry, hoped for some way for the prince’s attention to be diverted elsewhere. However, when Arthur died and his wife was given to Henry on the story that the marriage had never been consummated, Charles supported this too – determined to never be replaced as close companion of the prince. Too, with Arthur dead, Henry was next in line. A great many things shifted in the court at that time, as alliances were drawn and a great many Lords sought to forge a good and favourable friendship with the young man who would one day be king. And yet the friendship between Charles and Henry did not cease, something that the young Charles Brandon has been ever grateful for.
He has enjoyed a good deal of benefits from his close relationship with the now King Henry VIII, though he does not take them for granted. He is aware that every situation is precarious, even his, having grown up with Henry and having learned his ways. However, he truly believes that his position in the court – solidified all the more by having been honoured with a title (Duke of Suffolk) and a position in the king’s privy chamber (Lord President of the Council) – will remain steady so long as his loyalty never wavers nor seems to waver. Although his love for the king’s sister, Mary, could possible pose a threat to his position, supposing Henry disapproves of the blossoming relationship.
