My dearest companion,

Father says I must improve my penmanship if I am to accompany him to court, and so he has given me this book to record my days as they progress. He says that even though a husband will not be looking for a woman who can write (because many cannot), regular writing will sharpen both mind and tongue, though I must be careful of my tongue at court. Too many courtiers have been punished because they cannot keep silent. I think this is childish, because even a little toddler can be quiet if they wish.

Still, I think I shall hide this where no one can find it. I am afraid of being accused of treason, or slander, even if I am just a girl.

My education is quite good for being a girl, and I am secretly very proud of being able to name the stars, or ride horses alongside men. I know that pride is a sin, one of the worst according to the cardinals, but sometimes I cannot help but smile. Every morning I study the languages, astronomy, geography, history…there are far too many subjects to list, but my tutor does well to instruct me in all of them. One day if I do not marry, I may like to become a handmaiden myself to a little prince or princess.

I am young, only fourteen years of age, but many of my age-mates have already married. It is a very common practice, but Mother says that our hips are far too narrow yet for healthy children, and I am glad that she thinks this, for at this time I do not wish to marry. I am small for my age, and have not yet developed into the fronts of my dresses, but Father has already begun to lecture me about being so cheerful. He warns me against flirtation, especially with local lads, but I am cheerful at heart and cannot help but smile at everyone. Does this mean that I am becoming wicked?

My father and mother have always cautioned me about being an obedient child, as we are good Christians under God (as it should be), but sometimes I am confused as to what is right and wrong. I have heard different ideas on how to save one’s soul, but I cannot say one way or another if confession is right, or if the reformists have the right. Both my parents and my tutor refuse to comment on the subject, and tell me to concentrate on my lessons.

My family’s estates are in Dartington, though they are quite small in comparison to Hatfield or Whitehall. I like them well enough, and I am glad that I was born here instead of Normandy in France, where the rest of my family hails from. There is talk of war with France, but Father says to pay no attention, for merry England has always despised France, and the feeling is mutual. I should one day like to see France myself, but for the moment I am content to stay here. It is quiet and peaceful.

I speak often of Mother and Father simply because, apart from a much older brother, James, I have no other family. As I have said our estates are small, and few cousins live close enough to socialize with. My father is a member of King Henry VIII’s court, though what title he holds is a mystery to me, as Father is rarely there unless absolutely necessary.

I have never been to court before, but I have heard wonderous tales of its people and the festivities that it often holds. Mother said that we might find a husband for me there, but I am not sure if she is jesting or not. In any case, I will be at least thirteen before I marry, if there is a gentlemen at court for me during this visit. What’s more, Mother said that I could become a lady-in-waiting if they so desired. I have seen the queen (God rest her soul) riding past during the last royal progress, and I would adore the chance to serve the next queen. Though Mother is pleased by the idea, as I am, Father seems less keen for the idea. There is something to do with protecting my honor, and my family’s, but this is not a subject that I am privy to.

The talk in court of the deceased queen is quite sad. It is a sin and treasonous to predict the death of royalty, but I have heard tell of those who knew that the queen would die in childbed, or soon after. They spoke of her weaknesses in body, and I wonder what will happen to the king now. Still, I cannot comment, even in this private place. May England have a prince soon.

  • - - - - Roleplay Sample, The carriage was jolting, so badly that Katherine was in a horrid mood. This did not happen often, especially on auspicious days such as these, but she had been riding for several hours now towards the palace of Hampton and her rear was getting quite sore. (To say nothing, of course, of her patience.)

About to open her mouth and speak, Katherine caught a warning glance from her father and tilted her head back down, obedient. She traced a finger over the cuffs of her dress sleeves, admiring the embroidery that marked her as no royalty, but no peasant either. She was supposed to be content, that was true, but how could one be content with all of this rattling?

    “Father, when…?”

“Soon, Kat.” He sighed, leaning to crack open the shutters. They were already in the city, and noise and curious smells wafted their way into the carriage interior. Forgetting her misery and jolted bones, Katherine edged across the seat to look out onto the street. It was a cloudy day, made even more so by the smoke being belched by coal fires, but what she could see amazed her. Never had the girl been in a city, away from the countryside that she had always called home, and the swarm of people alone

They all seemed to be jostling one another, talking at the tops of their lungs, eating, brawling…the sea of humanity was enough to slow the carriage down to a crawl. Had she not been a proper young lady, Katherine might have leaned out of the window and called to them, excited. As it was, she had to pull back reluctantly, tucking wayward curls beneath her hood. If she was to be presented at court, she would have to be presentable.

From the corner of her eye, Katherine saw her father give the tiniest of nods, approving, and she couldn’t help but smile. There was little that she wouldn’t do to please her father, though the thought of entering court gave her something of a chill. Imagine, courtseying and paying her respects to the king in front of a crowd of people! For the first time, a seed of doubt began nudging at her mind, but it was too late now. Katherine would have to put faith in her father’s good name, and the fact that what she said was of little consequence in court.

Still, as the carriage finally sped up and rolling through a guarded archway, Katherine couldn’t help but straighten her skirts nervously and smooth her hair. She felt suddenly small and anxious, like a mouse, and the high walls that she could see through the cracked shutters helped to enforce the idea. They were at court, finally, and no longer was Kat a child. She told herself to be sweet and act mature, even if the door was opening now.

I AM THE ADMIN OF DOOM!

Ahem. I am Brandy. You know me from the c-box. Your application is great...the writing's excellent, and you've gone into great detail about her history (freeform apps are the bestest, aren't they?) The one thing (and it's teeny, believe me!), is her age. Most of the characters we have here right now are either sixteen or older, and though there's nothing about it in the rules, we would prefer characters to be at least fourteen or older. That way, they'll get more action at court, and that way, she can be a lady-in-waiting to someone like Princess Mary, or Katherine of Aragon.

So yes. Just change her age to at least fourteen, and you'll be good to go!
