He enjoys hunting, the outdoors, jousting, and any other form of competition. John is always ready for sport. He prefers to live and dress simply, but with a flare of fashion. He doesn’t read very often and is more liable to go outside or go find another activity than read a book. He is a man of action, not a man of words.
His entire life is not all about sporting activities. He does enjoy a good meal and the company of ladies, ladies being the key term. He does not enjoy loose women, but rather ones who are more virtuous and upstanding. He found the perfect woman in Catherine Willoughby, and they are now happily married. He belongs to Catherine with his entire heart, body, mind, and soul, and it is his life's endeavor to take care of her and love her for the rest of his days. His love for her is so deep and so unending that he even shaved off his beloved beard of four years for their wedding. He loved his beard, but he loves Catherine more.
Lastly, John is devoted to the service of his King and his country. He would do anything the King requested him to show his loyalty and devotion to him. He feels as though his father has left a blemish on the family name, and it is his life’s endeavor to erase it. His Majesty has been very kind to John, and he wants to repay him a hundred-fold.
- - - - - Family Members,
Catherine Willoughby -- Wife Cecilia Dudley -- Daughter, born December 1512 Edmund Dudley – Father, Deceased Elizabeth Grey – Mother Elizabeth Stourton, nee Dudley– Elder Half-sister Andrew Dudley – Eldest Younger Brother Jerome Dudley – Youngest Brother William Stourton -- Brother-in-Law Mary Willoughby -- Mother-in-Law - - - - Overall History, John was the eldest son of Edmund Dudley, an advisor to Henry VII, and his second wife Elizabeth Grey, daughter of the Viscount Lisle. He had an elder half sister and was followed by two younger brothers. He spent a happy childhood with his siblings racing around the gardens, horseback riding, climbing trees, hunting, and learning from their tutor (though John didn’t pay quite enough attention to his studies as he should have). His father was often away at court and so John didn’t know him very well growing up. However, when he was in his late teens, he joined his father at the court of Henry VII to learn his place and the duties expected of an elder son.
John found court tedious, but he did his duties without complaint. He began to admire the ladies of the court, but also learned some of their wanton ways, and he did not respect them for that. Instead, he revered ladies who were not free with their affections, and never tried to press himself into the heart of a woman. He also began to enjoy going on the odd hunt with the then Prince Henry, though they were never what one would call friends.
When Henry VII died, there was a financial crisis, and the blame fell on Edmund Dudley for his ill-advising. John knew that his father often sent lavish and unneeded gifts to the family home when he was younger, and he had the suspicion that perhaps these gifts were a result of some of the financial pratfalls the monarchy had taken. John sided with the now King Henry VIII and provided evidence of Edmund's financial pitfalls at the expense of England. His father was convicted for treason and executed in 1510. Instead of stripping the Dudleys of everything Edmund had earned, John was restored in name and blood and give the title of the Earl of Warwick.
The year after his father's execution, John met Catherine Willoughby, the Baroness d'Eresby at a Summer Masque. He fell in love with her that night, though he wouldn't realize it until later. Catherine was different from other women at the court -- she was virtuous, intelligent, and could posses a rather sharp tongue if the mood suited her. Needless to say, she was also an exceptional beauty. John began courting her and with the help of the Duke of Norfolk, arranged for them to be married. To him, Catherine is perfect and he could not live without her. They were married in September 1511, which would be one of the happiest days of John's life. He would become utterly devoted to his wonderful and dearest wife and vowed to never give her up for anything.
In the first part of 1512, John's life went under several trials. His wife was arrested for heresy and she was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Luckily, her cousin Judith snuck John in, and he dissolved into tears before being yelled at by his wife and whacked by Judith with her shoe. Seeing that he needed to be strong because Catherine had been weakened by her trials, he promised to be more of the man and husband he should be for his wife. Around the same time, his brother Andrew revealed to him that he had impregnated Christina of Denmark, visiting royalty. John lost it and cut Andrew off completely, making it clear that he never wanted to see Andrew again.
Shortly after his wife's imprisonment, John was approached by Edward Stafford, the Duke of Buckingham to participate in a plot to overthrow Henry VIII. John did not agree; instead he pretended to agree and saved the letters, later enlisting the aid of John Shilston, a fellow conspirator, to reveal the treasonous Buckingham and his ally Cecil Williams. They were arrested by Cardinal Wolsey and condemned to death, and it seemed for the moment the realm was free from insurrection.
However, there had been rumblings of war, and John was selected by His Majesty to fight in France. It was with a very heavy heart that John bade farewell to his wife and headed across the Channel to fight for King, Country, and Glory. He returned to England months later, unscathed by combat, and reuniting with Catherine was one of the happiest days in recent memory. However, they quarreled over his alliance with the Duke of Norfolk, and it was during this time that Catherine revealed she was pregnant. For most of her pregnancy, the two were rather estranged, with Catherine being angry at her husband for now bowing to her will, and John doing nothing to further exacerbate it. During that time, John was rewarded for his service to King and country by being named Lord Steward of the King's household.
Shortly after, the Sweat struck England, taking the pregnant Francesca de' Medici with it. John followed the King to Windsor but found, to his horror, that he was stricken with the Sweat as well. He sent word, bidding Catherine to flee to Lincolnshire; instead she came to Windsor and fell asleep at his bedside. Andrew came as well, to apologize to John and swear he would do everything possible to ensure the Earldom passed to Catherine and John's unborn child, even if it was a girl. However, John pulled through, and after a month, the Sweat had passed over England and people returned to Hampton Court. John's hands became full with dealing with His Majesty's household in the wake of the French coming to negotiate a marriage between Mary Tudor and Francois de Valois.
