Tom. She's one of those girls who marches to the beat of her own drum. She's smart and strong and brave, and she wants desperately to have an adventure. Not the imaginary kind that Little Tom and Alan have in the courtyard with big sticks for swords and barrel lids for shields, but real ones, like Maid Marian and Robin Hood, and King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. She spends a good deal of her time daydreaming, and her mother is constantly telling her to get her head out of the clouds. Tom would, except... reality is so dull. And when it's not dull, it's scary and dangerous, especially to a girl like her.
Tom is a little bit of an idealist. She knows she is, and she knows that her idealistic hopes are absolutely unrealistic, but still... Why can't a woman be as intelligent, strong and brave as a man? Why can't a woman learn to read and write? And... why do the rich men have all the power? Why does the church have all the power? Ah, but Tom can't say any of that. First of all, who would listen to her? She's only a girl. It frustrates her to no end, this whole 'womanhood' business. She actually likes learning to be a midwife, but she would rather spends her days climbing trees and learning the kinds of things her brothers learn and practicing archery with Joseph.
Tom is not shy, per se, but she keeps to herself for the most part. (She can't help but think that that's why Joseph wouldn't cast her a second glance as a girl.) She's friendly enough, and easy to get along with, as long as one is willing to be nice. She's friendly, and funny, and she's always willing to lend a hand if it's needed. She's far too proud and stubborn to ever accept anyone's help (except perhaps Joseph's), but she's always willing to offer hers. Fiercely loyal, Tom is very protective of those she cares about, and she will always, always be the first to jump to their defense, whether they need it or not. She has a quick temper and a tendency to leap before she looks, so she's gotten herself into a fight a time or two (as a boy, of course, because women don't fight) that she probably shouldn't have been in. Joseph came to her aid, though, and she was fine.
One thing that Tom wishes for desperately is that she could have the freedom as a woman that she does as a boy. Her personality in a man would be fine, expected, even. In a woman? It's all 'Oh, Thomasina, you're never going to find a husband with twigs in her hair and dirt on your face!' It's really quite difficult, this whole 'double life' thing. She doesn't like that she's lying to everyone, or that she has to lie to everyone, but it's the only way to be who she is.

- - - - Overall History, Thomasina Carter was born the eldest of six, and the only girl. It was clear from the time she was quite small that she was more than a bit of a handful; willful, curious, stubborn, and not at all what a proper woman should be, her mother lamented every day of Tom's childhood. Tom never could figure out why, until some older boys started making fun of her one day. She ran home, crying to her mother, which really only led to further teasing. Tom hated those boys, which was really something for the good-natured little girl, and she vowed that some day she was going to be like Maid Marian and thrash them soundly.
The only problem was, no one would teach her how to do that. Being the persistent young lady that she is, she asked literally every single blacksmith within a 30-minute walk of her home (including her father) to teach her swordplay, but no one would. She was a woman. Why in Heaven's name would she need to know swordplay? Tom was determined, though. She was going to learn some sort of weapon; obviously, she wasn't going to do it as a woman. As a boy, however...
Thus began the double life of Tom Carter. As Thomasina, she's stopped trying to pursue weapons skills, instead focusing on the wifely and midwifely arts (which, surprisingly, she's actually good at it. She helped deliver her two youngest brothers.) Initially, this caused Tom's parents (particularly her mother) to be suspicious, but it was a welcome relief, and she was finally acting like a 'normal' girl, so nobody questioned it. She 'borrowed' some of her younger brother's clothes and became Thomas. As Thomas, she was able to find someone to teach her archery- Joseph Hoode, a fellow servant, three years her senior. He was an excellent teacher, and that, combined with Tom being a naturally quick learner, has allowed her to flourish. She's good at it, and she makes her teacher proud. Unfortunately, her skill with a bow and arrow isn't the only thing that's flourished. Tom has managed to fall deeply in love with her tutor, and if she could, she would marry him. He thinks she's a boy, though, and Tom can't tell him who she really is, so she's left to pine in secret.
