Name: Charles Brandon
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Title/Rank: Duke of Suffolk

Appearance: Charles is muscular and athletic. His body is well toned after years of riding, jousting and fist fighting. He is as tall as the average man and is handsomer than most, with hazel eyes and a little stubble. His facial features are soft, but that seems to make him more endearing to the ladies. If he had to be any animal, he'd probably be a cute sort of dog that would remain loyal to its master or mistress until it is provoked and turned into a snarling beast. Most of the time he appears laidback, unlike some of the other men at court that prefer to hold themselves high and with dignity.

Personality: - Charles is a gambler, and right now, one of his biggest gambles falls on the Tudor family. He is in love with Mary but is utterly loyal to Henry and must choose which he will abandon and which he will permanently link himself with. If he doesn't play his cards right, he will end up with his head on the block.
- To keep his relationship with Mary undiscovered, Charles plays up the part of a womanizer. It's easy to do with the King's taste in women, and he's spent many an hour with Henry talking about the attributes of each lady of the court.
- He is loyal to those he loves most and has a good deal of room in his heart for any good person. Princess Mary Tudor holds his number one place, with her brother not far behind.
- He despises those who are power hungry and wishes to remove himself from the dangers of politics. He'd rather live a simple life of wine, Mary and song, though Henry has made that difficult for him after bestowing a dukedom on him.

History: Charles was born to Sir William Brandon and Elizabeth Bruyn. They were a humble family of low birth. Elizabeth died giving birth to Charles, and Sir William was killed in battle while Charles was 8 years old. Because Sir William had died carrying King Henry VII's banner, he brought young Charles to be raised with his son Henry, and the two boys became nearly inseparable. Charles is completely loyal to his best friend and king.

While growing up in the King's household, he often ran into Princess Mary. As she matured into a beautiful, intelligent young woman, Charles found his attentions drawn to her. But he has never voiced those opinions to the King or anyone else - he knows his place in Court and is wary of how Henry would react to the news. He wouldn't be the first of the King's companions to have his head removed at the King's pleasure.

When he was a teenager, Charles was in a riding accident that paralyzed his entire body. He eventually regained full use of his limbs, though he grows stiff on cold winter days and sometimes feels an ache in his joints if he's been on his feet all day. He tries not to let it bother him - such injuries keep him from doing what he pleases, and he isn't patient enough to rest a while.

Because he grew up in the same household as Henry, Charles has become skilled in dancing and jousting among other things. He's become quite the gambler and enjoys a good game of cards. His friendship with the King eventually earned him the title of Duke of Suffolk, though he isn't sure how he feels about this. Politics do not interest him, and he is almost sickened by the way court members manipulate each other to climb their way to the top of the social ladder. He would rather enjoy life's simple pleasures - and marry Mary.

Over his years at court, he's spent time with a number of the ladies while trying to forget the King's beautiful sister. Not that that has done him much good - he is still as in love with Mary as he ever was, and despite all the women he's danced with at court and taken to his bed, he cannot shake his feelings for her. There has been no talk of the King arranging a marriage for him yet, and he is grateful, though he knows that he will never be deserving of the Princess. Her birth is far more noble than his.

  • - - - - Roleplay Sample,
When her engagement to James was first made privy to her, Margaret was scared. Arthur had helped to dull the anxiety and convince her that things would be all right. He had never promised to break the contract between James, but he had at least offered his younger sister comfort when faced with the prospect of moving so far from home to marry a man in a country rumored to be populated with mud people. It wasn't uncommon for young princesses to be sent far from home, but it was a daunting prospect nonetheless. When Arthur died, Margaret felt as though she lost her only sympathizer and friend in the English court, and it had made her bitter. The polite young woman had quickly developed a tongue and used it to lash anyone who came close enough as well as the Scottish king and his people. She hid her fear with Tudor anger.

She was afraid now as Norfolk stood before her. Suppose that Henry had sent him in preparation for sending her away! She had dreaded the day that should happen for so long, the slightest sign that she was to be banished set her on edge. Nothing about her countenance betrayed her fear. Those that knew her would see her anger as a mechanism for hiding her fear, but those who knew her were dead. With her hands tightening on the arms of her chair, she listened carefully to the Duke's words. He assured her in the most humble of tones that he had come because he cared for the realm, the king and even her herself. The princess could not remember the last time someone had told her they cared for her, aside from Arthur. Something in her eyes softened only slightly. Margaret knew Norfolk's words were those of a courtier and any member of the English court was not to be fully trusted, but he at least had her ear.

She was aware that she had been harsh with him when she accused him of being sympathetic to the Scottish, but she did not relent with the cool gaze she gave him. If he truly was sympathetic to the Scots, she would have nothing to do with him. But the rest of his words were the truth and though she was reluctant to admit it, she knew she was not viewing her situation as she should. She had a duty to her country to create peace with Scotland, but her desire to remain in the English court among friends and civilization overrode her responsibility. God made her royalty for a reason, yes, but surely God did not realize how terrifying the prospect of moving to Scotland was. Even the idea of queenship was not appealing enough to lure Margaret away from the comfort of England.

But what could she do? There was a cold feeling in the pit of her belly as Norfolk's words sunk in. Margaret might frequently besmirch the name of her future husband, but she did know her responsibilities. A long pause settled into the air as Margaret's lips tightened into a thin line while she regarded Norfolk before she looked to her ladies. A wave of her hand dismissed them, and she waited until the last had left the room before looking to Norfolk again. These were words she would speak to as few as possible. She paused a moment more to phrase her words before she began. "Your Grace's words remind me of that which I have forgotten." It was as close to an apology as Margaret would ever get, and even now she found the words difficult to say. "As a princess of England, I bear a great responsibility to my country. I would wish no ill upon our sovereign realm, especially from my own hand," She paused a moment more, and somewhat of a troubled look briefly crossed her face before she forced it away.

"His Majesty has continued to honor the contract between myself and King James, despite the skirmishes that continue along the border between our countries. Suppose that the Scots do not relent once we have taken our vows of matrimony. What good would my sacrifice be in a country that does not honor such a contract? Surely there are other countries more worthy of such an agreement." Her fingers tightened around the wooden arms of the chair in which she sat, her anger rising to disguise her fear. It took a great deal of effort to calm herself and remind herself why Norfolk was here. "Your Grace observed that I have not retained a tutor on Scottish style. I do not wish to learn the ways of the Scots should they influence me unfavorably, but if this is the task the Almighty has placed before me, I must undertake it." Margaret might have just resigned herself to learning of her future country's ways, but her tone still held the same stubborn begrudging undertone. "I assume Your Grace came to me with a tutor in mind. Who is he? " It was clear that she was on the edge of a bad mood. The cold fear sat in her stomach, and she struggled to keep it from her face. To learn more of the Scots would be to accept her most unwelcome fate.
