    - - - - DREAMS, John dreams of a title, land, and an heir to inherit it. He wants to make sure his family's name lasts through the history of England. He does, however, hope to be happy in all this glory--love being the ideal, he hopes for that, though he doesn't count on it.
    - - - - FEARS, Losing everything and leaving court, having shamed his family and himself. Living at court is a constant gamble anyway, and John knows it, but he pushes the limits anyway--the greater the risk, the greater the reward.
    - - - - OVERALL PERSONALITY, Put simply, John appears to be the ideal courtier. He's a charming flirt while maintaining the appearance of being a perfect gentleman. He's well-educated, wealthy, energetic, a fine dancer, a competitive sportsman, and he's always up for any kind of actvitity or adventure, especially one suggested by the king. He appears to be a very caring, protective older brother to his sister, Isabel, who has always been his greatest confidante and remains so at court. He's ambitious, of course--but who isn't? In reality, John is more ambitious than most. He wants to see his family leave their mark on England's history, and he'll risk practically anything to ensure that happens. As such, he's learned to be a very observant individual; he always knows who is in a room, who's at court and who is not--with little else to do, knowing everything he can about the people who surround him became a priority. Years at court have taught him to pay attention to details, to be diligent and meticulous in his knowledge of the court and its players--opportunities to advance himself could come at any time.

But behind all this ambition is something much more complex than mere ambition. Yes, ambition drives him--it's his excuse, his crutch. But John has a certain problem with inferiority. He's always been competitive, though growing up, he had only Isabel to compete with, and--much as he loves his sister--she's a woman. Naturally, he was able to do more in the world than she was--that was just a fact. He recognized Isabel's intense curiosity and her quick learning abilities; it was perhaps that which led him always to translate literature for her, rather than to teach her Italian or French or Latin so that she could read it herself. John hates to be upstaged.

Luckily for him, this rather manipulative side of him comes with a smile and a wink, and he manages to pull it off fairly naturally, without anyone knowing. At court, John is known as a stand-up fellow, someone always ready for anything, and always full of sincere-sounding advice. John knows how to keep a secret, and he knows when to keep one--and when not to. His confidence never seems to waver, at least not when the sun is up and there are people around to see. But at times, John can hate who he's become. He gets scared, thinking of what could happen if he puts himself in the center of anything too controversial--his family is newly ennobled and newly wealthy, and it would be easy for them to lose it all rather than advance in the world. Despite this fear, John risks it anyway, and when the events of the day are over and he's alone with his thoughts, he knows it's selfish.

  • - - - - FAMILY MEMBERS, Sir Richard Chauncey, father; Lady Elizabeth Chauncey, mother; Isabel Chauncey, sister (18)
    - - - - OVERALL HISTORY, John Henry Chauncey was born the first son to Sir Richard and Lady Elizabeth Chauncey, though at the time of his birth, they were still just Richard and Elizabeth Chauncey. John was followed by two other boys, who died as babies, and finally, his sister Isabel, who fought her way into childhood with an unexpected strength. John had an advantage over the men who had come before him in his family; his father was the first to inherit enough of a fortune to educate his children well. John, though he lived at home in the country with his family, had excellent private tutors and learned everything from geography and philosphy to literature, poetry, and languages. He didn't mind at first that Isabel sat in on his lessons with him; they were close, as siblings go, but as they grew older and she displayed an intellect that matched his, John grew frustrated, and his competitive side came into play. He spent his spare time studying, to make sure he was always a step ahead of Isabel, who had to spend time learning dancing and etiquette and those sorts of womanly things as well.

The scales tipped in John's favor when their father made a donation to the king's treasury that earned him knighthood, and Richard was able to send his only son off on a proper, year-long European tour with the sons of several other lesser nobles--second sons and other country knights and that sort. John was thrilled, though he felt guilty leaving Isabel all alone--despite his need to feel superior to his sister, she was, perhaps, his best friend, and she loathed having to stay behind. But she had to stay and he had to go, and so he went. They traveled to France, Spain, and Italy, using the languages they knew, learning the culture, spending their parents' money, and--put simply--growing up. It was the first time John had been in the company of a group of young men his own age for an extended period of time, and he grew into an outspoken, confident man, quick with jokes and always eager to go off on some adventure. They had their share of adventures and other interesting little trysts--in France, John learned exactly how lovely it was to have a woman warm his bed--and then they moved on to the next city, to start anew. To add to the intrigue, several of them had been to court and had wild tales of what went on there that piqued John's interest. Upon his return to England, he was only too pleased to find that he would take his place at court with his father.

So John took his place, and being at court changed his life. He came with stars in his eyes, still relatively innocent compared to the men at court, and he quickly learned the game. He was equipped with money, his education, and his ambition, though the ambition he arrived with would be nothing compared to what it would grow into as he became a seasoned courtier. John found court life absolutely intoxicating; everyone was constantly on pins and needles, pandering to keep the favor of the king, competing in jousts and other sports, flirting with the ladies in waiting, and always, always, there were titles to be awarded, land to be doled out, lineages to be established. John knew he had to learn to play the game if he wanted to win the prize, and soon enough, people began to forget the innocent country boy who had first arrived at court, armed with stories of his travels to Italy and France. In his place, there was John Chauncey, a charming flirt, exquisite dancer, ruthless sportsman, always the first to jump if the king needed anything, the first to offer a lady assistance.

And then, just as he was preparing to discuss the idea of his marriage with his father, Richard decided to bring Isabel to court and see the two of them married as quickly as possible, while they are high in favor and money is good. Having Isabel back as a confidante is the only good thing about having her at court--he's seen the look in her eyes. It was the same look he wore when he first came to court, and he can't help but still be the protective older brother, to be selfless in this one thing. He doesn't want her to turn into what he turned into. But at the same time, he sees the advantages of having a beautiful sister of marriageable age at court--if she were to marry high, it would only help him. So, overwhelmed by his ambition, he says nothing to their father about sending her away, and he continues to bide his time, wondering exactly how high he can hope for a wife.

  • - - - - ROLEPLAY SAMPLE, This is from another site I'm on--Veins of Glass, a post-DH Potter RPG.

Theo wasn't exactly one of the Slytherin elite--one of those whose names the first years knew and feared, one of those that the professors grumbled about--mostly, he kept his head down and did what he had to do and tried not to make waves. You didn't get to the top of the social ladder by never making any waves, but after his first year, he didn't really mind so much--he had more important things to do than puff up his own pride by reigning over the school. And somehow, though he typically grouped Kestrel Selwyn with this 'elite' group of Slytherin students in his mind, he felt like this girl knew better, too. It was perhaps why he wasn't as wary of her as some of his other housemates--like the Hazel she was reportedly involved with, for example--so he had no problem taking her up on her challenge.

"Are you kidding?" Theo joked, collapsing comfortably into the other arm chair in front of the fire, dropping his school bag at his feet. "A first year could make a better toast. At least those twits would say 'to magic' or something ridiculously naive. 'To getting to use a wand.' Not much better, I'll admit--but the spirit of the thing's there."

Theo reached down and dug through his school bag briefly, then resurfaced victoriously with two inkwells, one full and the other only half-full, and his Transfiguration text. "Kind of full," he said, shaking the inkwells. "But these'll do, right?"

Not that he really intended on waiting for her permission; he pulled his wand out from his pocket and flipped open his book, paging through the chapter he'd read earlier in the library. Having located the spell he was looking for, Theo set the inkwells on the ground and tapped the fuller one with his wand as he muttered the spell. The short, squat inkwell stretched upwards and then outwards at the top, turning into rather a large goblet, in a shiny, completely opaque onyx color. "Cool," Theo said, grinning at his success. He repeated the procedure on the other inkwell, which stretched in the same way, but the black color was concentrated at the bottom and turned into a lighter green as the glass stretched higher, turning to completely clear glass by the rim--it had been less full of ink than the first.

Theo picked up the second goblet and held it up to the firelight; the color change made it look interesting and kind of appropriate, for the setting. "You can have this one, it's prettier," he said, tossing the glass gently in Kestrel's direction. "Here, catch."

He stowed away his textbook and picked up the black glass, rolling it back and forth between his hands as he thought. "So, a better toast, then?" he asked. He hadn't actually had one prepared, but like he'd said before, anything would be better than toasing to homework. "When's your birthday?" he inquired, somewhat suddenly, having latched onto the one thing he was most looking forward to in the coming year--turning seventeen. "We can drink to almost being of age. Unless you've already beaten me, which would just be inconsiderate."
