    - - - - Overall Personality,

Mary is, quite frankly, simple to figure out on the surface. The innocence displayed in her doe eyes only enhance this inherit ignorance she unfortunately has. Of course, Mary is a girl who does her best to try to be informed, and yet someone who does not appreciate gossip, as she has learned how deceitful it came be. She wants the truth—not idle words of chatty courtiers. Honesty is truly the best policy in the eyes of Mary, and she has a tendency to be a bit too truthful. Had women been allowed on stage, she would have made quite the terrible actress. She cannot hide her emotions, for it’s all plainly spread across her smooth face. It’s a pity too, for that is the most dangerous weakness for almost any courtier where the mask is the most important weapon. Mary is without such defense, and instead possesses an innocence both desired by some men and detested by others.

Despite what others may feel, and who may cast an unfavorable glance, Mary has a heart that tries to please. A smile is one of her greatest joys, and she more or less lives for the approval of all—even her family. She has a genuine heart, but is greatly mislead by the world around her. She believes what others say she is—quite gullible really, leaving her the least likely candidate to lure the king. Yet the Boleyn family figured they could trust Mary with that single task for two reason: her desire to please family, and her determination. Both ultimately could work in her favor, but the failure or success is never in pen. There are always others out there who would gladly snatch Mary’s opportunity from her very hand.

Don’t be fooled, though. Just because in most cases, Mary will flash a kind and warm smile to nearly every courtier, that determined and stubborn nature is inherent, as she is a Boleyn. If Mary sets her sight on a goal, she does her best to reach it to prove to others she is not so ignorant or incapable. She hates being seen as such, despite how true those descriptions ring. Mary is quite stubborn to a fault, and if anyone dares to wrong her, she is not likely to forgive. Anne has done nothing to specifically wrong Mary, though, and so it might confuse some why she does not seem to hold her sister in high regard. This is quite the contrary, though. Mary knows her sister is far more capable of using her wiles to lure the king, but Mary has found that she is always in the shadow. Mary struggles to surpass her sister, and sees her as an obstacle she must pass if she is to make her way in the world. She dislikes the idea that Anne has practically everything her heart could desire—while Mary is simply given the scraps. Hardly the idea in the eighteen-year-old’s mind. Justice is not served to the ever fair-minded lady.

It is quite simple to say that Mary’s good opinion once lost, is hard to regain, though it is not impossible since (as mentioned) she is gullible. A dreamer, if you will, who finds herself floating on a certain cloud of optimism that carries her through trivial times. Mary has high aspirations when it comes to both love and marriage—ideas that are quite childish, to be sure. However, Mary upholds them to the highest regard and clings to them ever tightly. Soft, seductive words would easily send Mary’s heart a flutter, for she wants to believe they are true. Of course, she has yet to come to terms with the fact that for a woman of her standing, love cannot be afforded. Arranged marriage are as sure as the sun rising.
