  • - - - - Eye Color, Brown
    - - - - Hair Color, Brown
    - - - - General Look,
Sister Mary Astrid was never one to fulfill societal norms. Even though she is a woman and nun, she does not carry herself like a woman or a nun. Her posture is less-than-perfect—sitting or standing. When walking down a corridor, she constantly look around and never looks down as is expected of a woman. Astrid’s voice is not soft, nor is it loud—it’s firm and assertive.

When it comes to wardrobe, Sister Mary Astrid has two sets of identical clothing and very little more. Astrid is never seen wearing anything but her habit, which consists of a white floor-length dress, a white apron-like scapular, a white wimple covering her head except for the face, and a white veil that extends down just past her shoulders. When the weather permits, Astrid wears a pair of black sandals. During the winter, the nun wears simple boots and adds a black, wool cloak to her attire. She never goes anywhere without her long set of prayer beads attached to her belt.

    - - - - Dreams, Sister Mary Astrid dreams of a day when the Church will become truly egalitarian—where men and women work alongside each other in the name and ministry of Jesus Christ. She knows that his day will not come for a long time, but she still dreams.
    - - - - Fears, Sister Mary Astrid is afraid that she will be forced to leave the Church and then be assigned to an arranged marriage. She would die—either by grief or her own hand.
    - - - - Overall Personality, For a woman in a patriarchal society and organization, Sister Mary Astrid is a loud voice for women everywhere. Mary Astrid was raised to believe that all of God’s Children are equal—with no regard to gender. This belief was instilled in her at an early age. Astrid is not, at all, afraid to voice her opinion—whether it be to a fellow Sister or to a Lord or to the Pope himself.

Mary Astrid is educated—something very unorthodox for a woman. Due to her former Superior’s egalitarian beliefs, Astrid was given a fair and extensive education—Latin, letters, mathematics, French, minor theology, and things like that. From her history of living in a community, Astrid is proficient at gardening and cooking, two things she finds much pleasure in. Given Astrid’s unorthodox education and the discrimination that has come as part of that (mostly from male enfranchised in the hierarchy), she has come to become very affirming of other’s best traits and talents. While there are people whom she certainly does not care for, Astrid hardly has anything negative to say about a person’s personality—not necessarily their position in the hierarchy.

Astrid is educated, yes—but only in the classroom and not in the street. She is very naďve to the workings of men. She does not understand the lewd behaviour that many men exhibit. Perverted jokes, even though she finds herself the butt of the joke, go straight over her head. When they are explained, she does get very angry and dismayed at the race of men (and women.)

As a nun, Sister Mary Astrid is enfranchised in the Church—although definitely not in the hierarchy. While Mary Astrid could have left the Church and found herself a husband, she did not. First of all, she hates the notion of arranged marriages. Second, she loves the Church, even in spite of its downfalls. While she has very little respect for the Pope and the bishops (and some of the priests), she is stringently Catholic. She despises the ideas that the Protestants profess. Despite not liking the Protestants, she loves Luther and could only hope to meet him one day. He found a way to stay true to the Church, but also point out the flaws of the clergy and the hierarchy. That, in Mary Astrid’s opinion, is what is needed.

  • - - - - Family Members, State here.
    - - - - Overall History,

Sister Mary Astrid—formerly Catherine Doyle was born the illegitimate daughter of a priest—a confessor to the Archbishop of Canterbury—and the daughter of a Duke. Rather than face the embarrassment of carrying the bastard-child of a priest, the Duke’s daughter was sent away to a Benedictine convent. Astrid—then Catherine—was born there. As soon as the baby was born, the Duke’s daughter returned to her life of luxury and splendor. The girl’s father struck a deal with the Prioress of the convent—his daughter would be raised and educated and he would annually provide money from the Archbishop’s purse to the convent. It was agreed upon and Catherine was officially taken in by the nuns.

Catherine’s education began when she was eight. The Prioress recognized that the girl was intelligent—as intelligent as any man—and deserved the best education available. The Prioress made arrangement for Catherine to be taught Latin, first, then French. Literature and arithmetic came next. Catherine wanted to learn theology and philosophy so badly, but knew that she would never be trained in those subjects unless she became a woman of the Church.

At the age of sixteen, Catherine entered the novitiate and took on the name of Mary Astrid. Following two years in the novitiate, Mary Astrid began taking lessons in theology and philosophy. Finally, life was good and she felt whole.

The Archbishop of Canterbury eventually noticed the deficit in his purse and traced his coin to the Benedictine convent. His confessor confessed to skimming money out of the Archbishop’s purse and sending it to support his illegitimate daughter. The Archbishop immediately called for a thorough examination of the convent and all of the Sisters. Eventually, the priest’s daughter was found. The girl was educated—far more than she should have been. The confessor and the Prioress were immediately deposed off—defrocked and left out in the cold of the secular world. The young nun couldn’t be deposed of, however, She was far too intelligent and educated—even if she was a woman. She was, however, too much of a threat in the convent—Lord knows what kind of rebellion she could have stirred up amongst the Sisters. Instead, the Archbishop made it known that she would be sent to Court, as the King would soon be expecting children and would need a tutor and servant. Her canonical authority changed from the Prioress of the convent to Thomas Tallis, the confessor of King Henry VIII.
