A.N. just a story I had running around, thought i'd post it and see what reviews I might get for it to see if it's worth continuing.

Part One

"Well," the man thought to himself in silent mocking tones "As ambushes go, this was a good one."

In fact the man was pretty sure that this was probably one of the best ambushes that had been his misfortune to run into and in his line of work he had seen plenty of them. It was kind of an occupational hazard.

The man lay on the cold concrete floor of the darkened warehouse with his back up against a stack of wooden crates, it wasn't a lot of protection but hey, protective cover of any kind was always appreciated. His gold and red colored uniform was tattered from several hits it absorbed from the high powered guns that were currently being fired at him and the left lens of his golden mask sported a large crack through the middle.

The man did his best to stifle a cough, so as to keep from giving away his location to the armed men currently searching for him. But the muffled cough came at the price of aggravating his several broken ribs and the thin trickle of blood that escaped from the corner of his mouth was a sure sign that the man had internal injuries as well.

It had seemed so easy at first the man recalled, a rumor from a small time informant lead him to this warehouse where a supervillain by the name of The Shogun of Japan was apparently storing automatic weapons for use by his henchmen in future crimes. All the man had to do was burst into the warehouse, beat a couple of surprised mooks and the guns could be confiscated and destroyed.

It's funny how things don't always work out like you plan.

The first thing that tipped the mam, a hero known as Solaris due to his solar energy based powers, off that he was walking into an ambush was when he discovered that the whole warehouse was lead shielded, including drop down window coverings, and that the solar energy he used was now blocked from him.

The second clue was the fact that instead of two or three street thugs he found himself facing thirty well armed and well trained mercenaries sporting the latest in body armor and carrying the newest version of the Shogun's eclipse gun, which drained Solaris's powers even more.

You see, Solaris and the Shogun were old enemies and apparently the Shogun had been really preparing for this little meeting.

Fortunately for Solaris, he had managed to drop the number of mooks by about half when his energy reserves began to run low. which however is how he wound up in his current condition of being badly beaten, bleeding and alone in a warehouse filled with bad guys.

Actually, Solaris wasn't completely alone. This time he remembered to bring along his Advanced Stealth Recon and recording drone, better known by his teammates as a 'speedball'. The drone was about the size of a softball with a dull gunmetal finish and was jammed full of recording, communication and jamming gizmos allowing the speedballs to act as spies, scouts or in this case, communication relays with home base.

The speedball had opened a private communication link between Solaris and the headquarters of his team, the Global Guardians, and was currently in touch with General Ito Hirachi, military liaison to the international team of superheroes.

"Solaris, what's your situation?" the General called out.

"Not good General." the wounded hero rasped out "I've got broken ribs, my insides are busted up and i'm just about out of juice. Did I mention the large number of well armed mooks running loose around here?"

"Psimaid and Nightmare are enroute and should reach you in about ten minutes." the General spoke "Can you hold out?"

"Not without some divine intervention. I think they got me this time." Solaris coughed softly, spitting out more blood.

Suddenly a loud scream and solid impact was heard from outside of the warehouse causing Solaris to jerk his head towards the sound leaving him gasping at the sudden pain.

"What the Hell was that?" the General inquired loudly.

"I haven't got a clue." was all the battered superhero could answer when suddenly one of the window coverings lifted up briefly then closed again.

"Hold it." Solaris whispered into his headset "Something just entered the warehouse."

Silently Solaris recalled the speedball and set it to watch the area around himself. It took all of his remaining strength to keep from crying out in surprise when a young man no older that eighteen suddenly appeared in front of him as if by popping out of thin air.

The young man wore a red silk Chinese style shirt and black Chinese style pants, his black hair was pulled back into a shoulder length pigtail and his storm blue eyes were filled with concern as he bent over the prone hero and spoke.

"You ok mister? You don't look so hot."

Solaris gave the kid a weak grin "I've been better but I think you need to take off now. There are some very dangerous people in here that would have no problem blasting holes in a young guy like yourself."

Back at base the General was yelling "Who is this kid? What is he doing there?"

Ranma smirked back at the wounded hero "Naw, I doubt that there is anyone here I need to be worried about. Besides, you're in no shape to fight anyone and the first duty of a martial artist is to protect the weak."

"I'm not that weak." Solaris snarled as he struggled to stand upright.

"Sure you're not." Ranma grinned as he pushed the hero back down on the floor with a single fingered push to the forehead "Don't worry, i'll be right back."

At that Ranma stepped back and seemed to vanish from sight.

"Whoa General, you see that?" Solaris whispered.

"See What?" the General replied "The kid just stepped back and then ran off. Have the speedball follow him."

"I'm telling you General, the kid went invisible." Solaris grimaced as pain shot through his chest as he watched the speedball fly off towards the side of the warehouse.

As Ranma made his way along the side of the warehouse while cloaked in the Umisenken, the movement of the speedball caught the attention of several mooks who opened fire on the annoying thing. All of the shots missed although one did blow a hole in the fire suppression system setting off the sprinklers.

"Nice shooting Dickweed." One of the mooks groused as water began flowing from the ceiling mounted sprinklers.

As anyone familiar with the Umisenken knows, the technique does not actually grant the user true invisibility. Instead it affects the minds of the targets to convince them to ignore the user and treat him as if not really there. However, since the speedball is a machine and did not posses an organic brain it was unaffected by the technique and thus captured Ranma's transformation from a black haired boy into a redheaded short curvy girl whose squawk at his sudden gender change attracted the attention of the dripping mooks.

"What in the name of the Kami just happened?" the General yelled as he watched the video feed from the speedball. "The boy just turned into a girl?? You have got to be kidding me."

Any further comment was cut off as on screen the now female Ranma flashed a brief purple aura before giving a smirk and leaping head on into the mooks dodging ebony energy beams with the fluid grace of a well trained dancer and giving those watching a ringside seat for a world class martial arts smackdown as Ranma quickly overcame the remaining mooks.

The General stood there with his mouth hanging open, there was something very familiar about that purple glow that he couldn't quite put his finger on. Quickly he turned to a soldier sitting in front of a computer terminal.

"Hitoshi. I want you to run a codex check and see if we get any kind of hits on this kid." the General ordered "There is something strange about this whole thing."

Another soldier called out from a nearby terminal "General, Psimaid and Nightmare have touched down and are making their way into the warehouse."

The General nodded and grunted in approval "Good, tell them to be careful but under no circumstance are they to confront the kid, if he gets away let him go, we'll catch up to him or is that her later."

The soldier relayed the orders to the heroes and called back to the General "Orders acknowledge, they've entered the warehouse and have met no resistance so far. No sign of the kid, looks like he slipped away. They are stabilizing Solaris and getting him ready for Evac. The Evac chopper is two minutes out and closing. Nerima police are on scene and securing the perimeter."

The General grunted once more as he turned to head out of the room but a shout from Hitoshi caught his attention.

"General, we got a hit on the codex. our mystery kid is too young to be the original but going from the footage the speedball captured, the codex gives an eighty three point six percent chance that the kid is related to a retired Guardian codenamed Wild Orchid."

At those words the General's eyes lit up and a small smile appeared on his rugged face "I knew that I knew that aura from somewhere." the General said softly to himself "Orchid's child perhaps?"

The General headed for the door and called out as it opened "I'll be in my office, do not disturb me under any circumstances."

With that the General departed and the soldiers in the room seemed to give a collective sigh of relief.

PART TWO

General Ito entered his office, a pondering look still on his face as he sat behind a large oak desk and booted up his computer. Soon he logged on and with the use of a special authorization code was soon going through files that he hadn't looked at in years. It took a few minutes but he soon found what he was looking for and with a slight smile he reached for the phone.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The woman knelt in her garden amid the wide variety of colorful blooms and grunted slightly as she grabbed another weed that with a sharp yank she added to a growing pile by her side. The garden was one of the few spots that the woman felt her mind slip into a state of calm that would allow her to think about her troubles without getting upset.

Her husband had proven to be a disappointment, no longer was he the gentle, honest man of honor that he had been when she threw aside her own family honor to marry him. Over the years he had grown lazy and greedy and had cast aside his honor for little things of material pleasure. Even now these days he preferred to pass the blame for his misdeeds onto others rather than accept responsibility himself. But for some reason she still loved him and couldn't bear to consider a divorce even after the truths about his behavior over the last ten years had finally come to light. Perhaps it was because he knew of her condition and yet still remained with her, although it was true that he spent more time with his friend these days than he did with her.

Now her son on the other hand brought her much joy and pride, even with the curse that caused him to change into a shapely young girl when splashed with cold water. A curse resulting from more of her husband's stupidity she had learned. There were times however, when she thought about how much her child's female form resembled her own that fears and concerns that normally lurked deep in her subconscious floated up to the surface of her thoughts. During those times even her garden failed to bring her complete comfort.

The woman raised her head when she heard the phone inside the house begin to ring. Normally she would have ignored the phone, letting the caller leave a message on the answering machine but this time, the phone was ringing in a manner she had not heard in quite some time. The series of short rings followed by several long rings told the woman that this was not an ordinary phone call.

Rising up, she brushed the dirt from her hands as she made her way into the house. Silently she hoped that the phone would grow silent before she reached it, the likely caller perhaps giving up but the infernal thing continued to ring in the unusual manner seemingly determined to continue until she picked up the receiver.

Slowly she raised the phone to her ear.

"Hello?" she spoke, a slight nervous quiver tinting her voice.

"Hello Orchid," a deep voice came over the line, a voice she had not heard in years "This is General Ito with the Global Guardians."

"General, I was not expecting to hear from you." the woman replied, her voice more steady now "I hope this is not an emergency call, I am retired from the active roster you know."

"Retired from active duty yes, but you still are listed as a reservist, Orchid." the General returned with a slight chuckle not seeing the woman's eyes widen at his statement.

"But have no fear Orchid, I am not recalling you to active service." at that the woman's shoulder sagged in relief "However, I will be in Tokyo in a few days and I would like to meet with you, if you are available of course."

"Meet with me General?" the woman asked "Of course I can be available but I fail to see what I can do for you."

"Well, let's just say that I would like to talk to you about boys who become ass kicking women who glow purple."

The woman gasped as her eyes widened in surprise and a bit of fear, she had to lean against the wall to steady herself and keep herself from falling over. "What did you say?"

"Sorry Orchid, this line isn't secure enough for this conversation to continue. But let's just say that a connection between yourself and an unknown factor was brought up today and judging by your reaction i'm thinking that you may have some of the missing puzzle pieces i'm looking for. I will send a driver to pick you up in three days then we'll meet and have a talk."

The General chuckled once more "I hope that your Guardian I.D. card is up to date."

With that the General hung up and the woman stood there for a few more moments staring at the quiet phone as the conversation reran through her mind.

"Boys who become women. With purple glows." the woman's heart sank as her deepest fear suddenly seemed to be becoming reality "Oh Ranma, please Kami-sama, let this be someone else the General is talking about. Please don't let me have passed this damned thing on to my only child."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two days had passed as the woman wrestled with her fears and concerns, still hoping that it was not her child that the General wanted to talk about but knowing deep inside the kind of life and luck that her child had,it probably was.

The woman entered her bedroom and went to the closet. It took a few minutes and some rearranging but she soon brought a box from the very back of the closet. She placed the box on her bed and lifted the lid and stared at the contents for a few moments as old memories flashed through her mind.

Boots, deep purple in color with a dark red trim were the top items in the box. Reaching in and setting aside the boots she pulled out a pair of elbow length deep purple gloves, these too had red trim. Under the gloves was a bright golden belt and a domino mask in the usual purple color. Putting these things beside the boots and gloves on the bed she then pulled a dress out of the box. Holding the dress up to the light, she turned it to the left than to the right, checking it for any signs of damage or wear from the years it had spent packed away.

With a slight frown as it still seemed to be in one piece, the woman put the dress on the bed and with a resigned sigh began to undress.

A few minutes later the woman looked at herself in the full length mirror in her bedroom. She hadn't worn this uniform in almost two decades, since just after she retired from the Guardians a few months before she married Genma. Surprisingly it still fit, true, it was a little tight in the stomach and hips and she certainly couldn't recall that it had been so short when she was on active duty but if she had to be honest with herself, she still filled the uniform out real good.

Seeing herself in her full uniform brought back a lot of memories of past adventures and of old friends, comrades in arms and even, she blushed, an old lover who she had turned away from when she learned of her condition sure that he would not want to waste his time with her after that.

Reaching into the box she pulled out one last item. a rectangular piece of plastic with her code name and picture on it. Her Global Guardians identity badge.

Taking a deep breath she then clipped the badge to her belt. "Ok General," she whispered "Wild Orchid reporting as requested."

Or at least reporting as soon as she let this damned uniform out a bit.

PART THREE

Nodoka sat quietly in the passenger seat of the silver sedan that was currently taking her to her meeting with General Ito, her mind filled with a multitude of thoughts, fears and worries. She had decided not to wear her old Guardian uniform as it was a bit too snug in places not to mention shorter than she remembered.

The driver, after a few attempts at small talk, drove through the busy Tokyo streets in silence content to leave Nodoka with her thoughts.

After a nearly two hour drive the sedan pulled up to checkpoint where he presented his I.D. and passed through when cleared into an underground parking lot.

Nodoka exited the car and after straightening her skirt, having foregone her usual kimono for a skirt and blouse, followed the driver across the parking lot and into an elevator.

After a short ride upward the elevator opened into a large lobby, the walls covered with pictures and paintings of Global Guardians past and present. Nodoka's journey towards the desk at the far side of the lobby was interrupted when she spotted a picture of herself in her uniform in a group shot with her old teammates.

"We all seemed so young." she said as her eyes roved over the picture and memories of past times rose up to greet the faces of friends long gone.

"Yes, hard to believe that we were that young once." came a male voice whose Japanese had a touch of an American accent.

Nodoka spun around to face the speaker and froze at the sight of a man she remember all too well.

He was tall, at least six feet, his bright red hair now darkened slightly with age with a few strands of gray at his temples still as unruly as usual. But it was his deep blue eyes that caught Nodoka's attentions. They were still as blue as she remembered and still deep enough for her to lose herself in as she had so often done in days long past. But outside of the touch of gray and just a few extra pounds on his still muscled form he still looked very much as he had back when they were more than just teammates.

"Russ-san." she managed to say as a soft smile crossed her lips and she reached out to embrace the man.

"Doka-chan" he softly whispered as he wrapped his arms around her. "I heard that you were coming in today. I had to come see you and I'm pleased to say that you are still as beautiful now as you were then."

Nodoka laughed as she swatted his shoulder "Oh hush you charmer. I'm just an old married woman now."

Russ frowned briefly at the word married than smiled at her again "No really, I only speak the truth."

Nodoka sighed softly as she stepped out of the embrace and turned to look back at the picture "Unfortunately I am a married woman."

Russ nodded "Well, not that I didn't try to make you one myself you know. But you just left, quit the team and moved away and married that.. that...man."

"Genma, his name is Genma." Nodoka replied "And he was a good man."

Russ snorted "I've read the police files on him, Doka, He's a conman and a thief and a possible child abuser. Guilty of a thousand petty crimes. Why no one has pressed charges against him I don't know. But you deserved so much better than him. I could have been much better than him but you just left without even a word goodbye."

Nodoka bowed her head at his words "I know it was sudden but I had my reasons and they seemed like good reasons at the time. I was young and foolish and yes, even scared and maybe I was rash in my actions back then but I wasn't trying to hurt you Russ, I was trying to protect you."

"Protect me?" Russ said in wonder "Protect me from what?"

A tear slowly made it's way down Nodoka's cheek "From a life stuck with me." she whispered.

As Russ stood there trying to make sense of Nodoka's words, she wiped her eyes and looked back up at the picture. "Are you still in touch with any of the others?" She said changing the topic.

Russ nodded as he allowed her to change the subject. Perhaps they could talk again later. "A couple of them. Most of them have retired or have taken on reservist and mentor roles like me. Shocker passed away from cancer a couple of years ago and Lady Hammer got married and had something like seven kids last I heard."

Nodoka's eyes widened "Seven children? Wasn't she the one who vowed that she would never let a man touch her?"

"That was her." Russ laughed "Guess she had a change of mind."

"Ahem," a throat cleared behind them drawing the two's attention to the waiting driver "I'm sorry Orchid, Coldsnap, but the General is waiting."

"Oh yes, sorry about this." Nodoka blushed "Russ it was good seeing you again but I must go."

"Doka, I'll be here for a while, if you want page me and we'll go get some dinner and catch up on old times again."

"I'd like that. Then I guess I'll see you soon."

Russ watched her go with the driver, memories of days and nights long ago filled his head and he smiled as he thought of the dinner yet to come.

PART FOUR

The driver led Nodoka across the lobby and towards the big desk at the other end of the room where after a retinal scan and a hand print scan she exchanged her old Guardian ID for a new one. As she then walked past the desk and down a long hallway she gave a casual glance behind her and noticed that Russ was still watching her.

With a light blush, she looked away and continued to follow the driver, the extra sway to her hips noticed by the now smiling Russ.

After a few minutes, Nodoka found herself standing before a door marked "Conference Room Three".

The driver knocked on the door then opened it, gesturing to Nodoka to enter. "The General is waiting for you Orchid. When you are finished you can have the receptionist call down to the motor pool and we'll have a driver sent to take you back home. Then the driver smiled slightly "Unless of course you make other plans for the evening."

With a slight blush Nodoka made her way past the door and into the conference room where she saw the General waiting for her.

"Wild Orchid reporting as requested, General Ito." She spoke up firmly.

The General smiled gently back at her as he gave a slight bow "Nodoka-san, How nice it is to see you again. You look well, the years have been kind to you."

"You look well as well General," Nodoka replied back returning the bow with a deeper one of her own. "Now about why I am here?" She began only to stop when the General raised his hand.

"One moment if you please," He interrupted her "We are still one person short before we can begin."

"Another person?" Nodoka queried with a slightly puzzled tone.

The General nodded "Yes, a prominent scientist, an expert in genetics and metahuman biology, got wind of what I want to discuss and insisted on being here."

Before Nodoka could ask any more questions the conference room door opened and a man in his mid sixties and wearing a slightly rumpled suit entered the room.

"Forgive my lateness General," the man spoke with an aged but firm voice "I was distracted by a.... You, I thought that you'd be here." The man looked up at Nodoka who blinked in surprise.

"What in the name of the Kami's are you doing here?" She demanded indignantly.

"You two know each other?" The General asked surprised.

Nodoka nodded "Yes, Fujihara Renjiro happens to be my father."

"Oh yes," the man nodded "No-chan is my daughter. Although I must admit that we haven't spoken in a while. Almost eighteen years to be exact."

"For damn good reasons." Nodoka snarled.

Seeing that the two were about to begin arguing the General stepped between them waving his hands "As much as I hate to interrupt this little family reunion, I do have something that I need to talk to you about Nodoka. So if the two of you will be seated we will begin."

As the father and daughter took their seats the General walked to the front of the room to stand next to a projection screen. "Now as you may not be aware of Nodoka, these days when Guardians go into the field they are issued a drone used for communications and surveillance , they called them Speedballs as they are about the size of a softball." An image of a speedball appeared on the screen as the General continued "About a week ago, a Guardian named Solaris was following a lead about a cache of illegal weapons and instead wandered into an ambush. I won't go into details but let's just say that it was bad and we were at risk of losing Solaris when his speedball recorded the following.... please watch the screen."

Nodoka and Renjiro watched as the screen replayed all that the speedball had recorded from Solaris's reports to the sudden appearance of the young man with the black pig tail and wearing red and black Chinese silks. The sight of who made Nodoka gasp raising an eyebrow on the General. Then the speedball followed the teen and recoded the sprinklers going off and the boy suddenly turning into a girl who than flashed a purple aura before launching into a martial arts smack down on a group of armed men.

The General than froze the screen on the image of the girl punching a hole in the wall and escaping.

"I was quiet surprised by the amazing... skills that the... ah... newcomer showed, especially the purple light show. A codex check revealed a similarity to you Orchid so I wanted to ask you about a possible relationship between the two of you. Judging by your reaction, it's seems that I was correct in my assumptions."

Nodoka nodded softly as a tear ran down her cheek "Yes, that is my son Ranma."

"And the girl?" The General probed.

"Also my son Ranma." Seeing the General's questioning looks she elaborated "Ranma possesses an actual Chinese curse, he turns into a girl with a splash of cold water, hot water returns him to his male form."

Before the General could ask anything else Renjiro spoke up with wonderment in his voice. "That purple glow... She has the Helix."

Nodoka's eyes got wide and she shook her head in denial "No, it can't be. It's a just a battle aura that's all. Ranma shows them all the time."

Renjiro rebuked his daughter sternly "No No-chan, it was the Helix. It looks just like yours."

"No please, not that, Don't let me have passed that terrible thing on to my only child." Nodoka sobbed.

"Terrible?" Renjiro roared indignantly "Why your Helix let's you shed 20mm cannon shells like raindrops. You lifted a Soviet main battle tank over your head and threw it 300 meters. You can run at 85 mph for several hours without tiring. Your endurance, your reflexes, your reaction time, your strength all enhanced to metahuman levels. How can you call it terrible?"

"Because it's killing me!" Nodoka screamed out "Yes, it enhanced my body but it also increased my aging process. I'll be dead of old age by the time I'm fifty, sixty if I'm lucky."

Nodoka took a deep breath "And now it seems as if my child has it as well."

Ouch. Poor Nodoka. That could be the reason for her obsession with grandbabies, the possibility of not being around to meet them.
