“In ancient times, magic was common. By harnessing the power of the Mana Seeds, society grew. People as always waged war on each other, but the development of the Mana Fortress caused the war to extend outwards to other worlds in other Space-Time locations. It was only through the actions of a Hero and the great Mana Beast that the universe itself wasn’t destroyed by the arrogance of Man. The Mana Fortress was destroyed, and the Mana Seeds were scattered, but time flows like a river…. And History repeats…” -Densetsu Sonata Prophecies - discovered by Yuuno Scrya on Unregulated Planet 98. *************************** Mana’s Deception By Ellf Chapter 1: The Induction *************************** Disclaimer: I do not own any of the recognizable characters in this fanfic. It had been far too long since he felt this. This power. It was just like his. He smirked. Such familiarity could be used to suit his needs. Locating it would be a simple task, and then the source could help him find what he needed. It would only require the right incentive. Flipping open the folder to reveal a pair of pictures, he chuckled. “Ranma Saotome, eh?” ************************** In the Nerima Ward of Tokyo everyone has become used to a certain status quo. Weirdness extends from one end of the ward to the other. Specifically in the Furinkan district, the people had gotten used to the weirdness that seemed to center around the martial artists. Today unlike most days was a calm day. It would seem after what had happened the week prior, the status quo had been shaken up and would need to find a new equilibrium. It had been in fliers throughout the district; Ranma Saotome and Akane Tendo were to be wed. Everyone was invited so long as they brought the appropriate gifts for the wedding. Of course, this included all of the rivals and other fiancées that the boy had acquired during his time here. Needless to say, the wedding was a disaster, destroyed before the two had even had a chance to walk down the aisle. For the past week, neither Akane Tendo nor Ranma Saotome were seen socializing outside of school, nor had their interactions been all that positive when talked to about the events. Ranma shook his head. The events were still annoying to think about. He’d lost his chance at a cure once more, and it was all Soun Tendo’s fault. Had he not hidden the cask from him, Ranma could have been cured along with the others, but no, things could never be that simple for him. Of course, he couldn’t really blame Ryoga for acting the way he did, in a way becoming a pig was far worse than becoming a girl. Mousse… well he became cursed on his own, the idiot, but it’s not like Ranma wasn’t willing to share the cure if he found one. Of course, now there was less likely to be a cure. Eh… too bad. Becoming a girl was an inconvenience at times, and it’s not like he hadn’t accepted his girl form a bit anyway. Still, something had changed since the fight with Saffron. Something made him freeze in that free-for-all for the cask, and that allowed Happosai to steal it. *tha-thump* There… what the hell was that? That was the fifth time this week he felt that. At first it was faint, a pulse that was almost ki but not quite. Whatever it was, it was progressively getting stronger each time it pulsed. Somehow he knew that it was going to bite him in the ass if he didn’t investigate it. Of course, knowing his luck it’d bite him in the ass either way. Ranma stood up in the ruined dojo. The energy from the latest pulse still permeated his senses. Where was it coming from? His feet seemed to move on their own as he walked out of the dojo, barely noticing Akane breaking cement blocks in the yard. He followed his senses into the bedroom that he had at one point shared with his father and into his pack. Digging through his pack he clasped his hands around a pair of things and removed them from his pack. Opening his back revealed a pair of jewels… one apparently a perfectly cubic sapphire along with a cylindrical ruby. *tha-thump* *FLASH* Visions assaulted Ranma’s mind. A floating fortress, a young man, a girl and a kid of indeterminate gender fighting a dragon, and a giant tree. Along with a sword that connected everything… and then he was back in his room. Characters started to form on both the ruby and sapphire…. Ranma dropped them both like they were ablaze. Though neither struck the ground… they floated independently of any support. “Abyssus, Vinco Ranma.” [Hello, Master Ranma.] Both chorused. One voice was female, the other male. “Huh?” Ranma eloquently responded to the greeting of the two floating rocks. “You can talk and I can understand you? Well, not understand… that wasn’t Japanese. Wasn’t English neither.” The sapphire floated towards him. “If you like, we can speak like this.” She had switched to Japanese at this point. “Anything to make our new master more comfortable around us…” The ruby gave off a sound that could only be described as a masculine chuckle. “Always the suck-up, Undine.” Ranma looked between the rocks. “Okay… it’s official, I’ve gone crazy. My life has gotten so weird that I’m not freaking out about the existence of talking rocks. Pops didn’t try to engage me to a rock, did he? Because that’s a little absurd, even for him.” The sapphire’s feminine voice came out flatly. “No, we aren’t engaged to you, Master Ranma, but we are yours.” “Huh?” Ranma’s ever so eloquent reply came out. “What Undine is saying is that she and I belong to you, Master, and no one else.” The ruby glowed as it spoke. “Where once we were trapped in the Gekkaja and the Kinjakan, you freed us.” “Wait… both of you were in those stave things that Saffron was using and I was using… heat… and cold?” “We powered them, yes, Master Ranma. Forgive me for not introducing myself; I am Undine, your servant, power source of the Gekkaja.” The sapphire glowed and the strange characters from before were writing on it. “And I am Salamando, also known as Salamander depending on what you wish to call me. I was used to power the Kinjakan.” The ruby had similar writing appearing on it as it talked. “Well, Salamando’s easier to say, so I think we’ll stick with that for now, but wait… you two powered the Gekkaja and Kinjakan? So you’re what made them freeze and burn?” “I told you he was smart, Salamando, you didn’t believe me. Yes, that’s right, Master.” “Okay, what’s with this Master stuff? I’m just Ranma. I ain’t anyone’s master.” While Ranma could speak properly if he wanted to, when he was confused or trying to understand things, his speech would revert to a less cultured form of Japanese. “We’re bonded to you, Master Ranma, through your bloodline. If given a free choice, we would follow you to the ends of the earth to help you.” The sapphire tried to explain. “Oh this would be so much easier if I had arms. Master, if you would just hold me in your hand for a second, I could show you what I mean.” “Uh… sure.” Ranma held out his hand, and the sapphire floated into it. When it landed, it lit up for a second, only to be interrupted by a coughing sound coming from Salamando’s ruby. “Undine, we’re indoors, I believe that if we are going to do any demonstrations, we should probably head someplace that is unlikely to be irreparably damaged by the demonstration.” The sapphire’s light faded a bit. “Oh… silly me. Master, could we please go to a place where it would be feasible to introduce a new technique that has potential for damage?” Ranma nodded. “Yeah, I could use some time away from the house. Don’t think anyone’ll attack today. Hopefully.” He stood and palmed both Salamando and Undine. “Could you guys tone down the light a bit, I don’t want to have people notice you if I’m walking by.” [i\“Yes, we’ll do it right now, Master Ranma.”[/i] Undine’s voice was in his head. He wished he could say that surprised him. Slipping the jewels into his pockets he commented, “That’s really neat, but now it’s going to look like I’m talking to thin air. An’ I don’t need people to think I’m crazier than they already think I am.” “Don’t worry, Master, all you have to do is think at us, and you should be able to communicate pretty easily.” Salamando’s voice this time. “Like this?” Ranma thought at the two jewels and got an approving feeling in return. He started down the stairs, unhindered by any of the other members of the house. His father was playing shogi with Mr. Tendo, Nabiki was out somewhere, Kasumi was probably doing laundry and Akane… she was out with a few friends from school. So imagine Ranma’s surprise as he opened the door to leave and an older man was standing there about to knock. The man was obviously a foreigner, dressed in a nice suit. His most distinguishing feature on his face was a hooked nose protruding above his lips. His slicked back hair indicated the use of a styling product, and his stance gave no indication that he was a martial artist of any sort. Then there was the bit about him using the front door instead of the back. Not that any of his rivals actually used doors. The man smiled when he saw Ranma. “You look just like your photos.” There was only a hint of an accent on his Japanese, and the dialect was pure Tokyo native. “You are indeed Ranma Saotome, correct?” Ranma stared blankly at the man before nodding. “Oh good, good. I was afraid that I’d come to the wrong house. I’m terrible at directions, you see. Well not so terrible as one of your friends, but still it’s a right pain to try to find where I am trying to go without good and proper directions. May I?” Ranma didn’t move. The man didn’t seem to breathe at all as he got all of that out. “Oh dear, it seems in my haste to find you, I’ve forgotten basic courtesy. My name is Edwin T. Roaning, and I’ve come here to offer you a job, Ranma Saotome.” (incomplete chapter) |
