Whistler's Mother, ehh? :snigger: :snigger: Questions: Will the presence of present Sailor Pluto re-energise the ancient Time Staff? And who gets to go to the Moon to retrieve the Venus Sword and Time Staff? And which tastes better - Venusian Cherry or Setsuna Meiou? :-D :-D :-D

Time Turneres are made from the ground up remains of any and all Sailor Pluto-related artifacts the wizards had on them.

Funny plot twist, or ridiculous, unnecessary-because-you've-already-got-something-better suggestion?

Time turners are a plot device I'm not really that fond of in the Potterverse. Hello? If Time turners are available why didn't Harry use them more often?

It's in my opinion completely irresponsible to give Hermione a time turner just to make it possible for her to attend more classes instead of using one to prevent Cedric's death for example.

I never really understood that logic. Or using it to prevent the Daepartment of Mysteries fiasco for example. Or preventing Dumbledore's death.

By canon, people who tried to play with the time turners came to nasty ends. In other words, changing the past usually killed the traveler.

I think another major factor is what I see as the inability to effect anything you know positively happened: because they never actually saw Buckbeak die they could effect it without raping the fabric of reality. Harry saw Cendric die and the DoM fiasco is a headache just waiting to happen. Same for Dumbledore's death, because Harry concretely knows they all happened he can't effect them.

Dumbledork, did you ever play Mage the Ascension (M:tA)? If you have you just assume that someone who changes Time gets 20 points of Paradox and goes boom.

If you haven't: In M:tA, every time a Mage casts a spell reality tries to resist his magick. The more subtle the casting (making it look like a coincidence), the easier to cast magick. Now if you don't want to be subtle, or can't be, then you remake a small part of reality, but the price is Reality does NOT like it. The backlash energy builds up in a mage until it reaches a tipping point and either the mage has some REALLY weird things happen (his bones turn into wood, goes insane, etc) or he explodes. Sometimes the explosion is big enough to kill other people in the area.

First post here – not an author, only unassociated lurker, so if it’s exclusive club, feel free to tell me to shut up. :) (though if you tell me to stop lurking, your command will be cheerfully ignored :snigger: )

First - forget dementors! Imagine the poor, poor Olivander. I pity the guy! He is so very dedicated! He remembers every single wand from thousands wands he sold through decades. His whole family was wand creators for over thousand years. Wands are his whole life, and now his pride and joy got such trashing!

Poor guy. :p I would bet he is now itching to pursue Ranma – it was probably first time in his whole life that customer had to leave unsatisfied and wandless – and due to bad wand reaction. I just had image if him joining rest of the Nerima crowd in mad pursuit after Ranma. Not that I would want him to actually find Ranma anytime soon. :p

As for time-turners contra timegates, yep, timeturners won’t allow to change past. There is no risk of paradox, as timeturner permits only for changes consistent with user timeline. Meaning – you can’t change anything you experienced.

I believe, it’s radically different mechanism than timegate. Not only due to strength, range, or such parameters, but also in approach to the problem. Timegate simply cuts the hole in time – it is real thing. Real and dangerous - yep, here you can erase yourself. Timeturners on the other hand seems are more like a time trick, than anything else. If I were to risk a gues, I would say, they are distantly related to pensives. One reaches in time anchored to memories, with no possibility of interference, and second reaches into the past, and allows interference – as long as memories are untouched.

Exact mechanism is not that important – but ‘memory’ angle would give explanation sufficiently different from timegates.

Heh, timeturners are not that important in general – I’m trying to imagine a fit Setsuna will have after finding about hall of prophecies!

Prophecy creates determinism in the infinite paths of possibility. Some thing is bound to happen, no matter what action people will take, no matter what will they chose. It is bound to be visible in Time Gates. I only wonder how strongly visible… or perhaps not – it may be more interesting if timegates had limitations. It’s >time< gate after all, not >fate< gate. Perhaps gate sees all possibilities, but fate will force world to follow given trail, even though other possibilities would look like equally probable.

I wonder when it will occur to Konatsu to check if there exists a gender reassignment treatment in wizading world. Or find about polyjuice.

Speaking about Konatsu… (sigh) probably least delusional and most adaptable member of Nerima crew – but I would lie if I said I like to read about him. Konatsu as he was in manga, was an ‘instant’ character introduced only to challenge Ranma and effectively disappear soon after. There is a plenty of them in manga, some downright silly, like dojo destroyer, Pink and Lind, copycat or Picollet. I dislike reading about them because in manga they were introduced only for their comical value, without any background, without details or care for ‘silliness level’ (which was usually scrapping the roof). Including them in a story gives them importance equal to any other character – which I feel ‘undeserving’. Irrational, yes, but true. When I look at Ranma’s 10 years long training, his/her progress through the manga, all those fights, sparring and adventure and experiences and compare them to Konatsu… I cannot help but think “Why should he be equal? Just because he is a ‘genius’? Where is his work to improve? Where is his sparring? Teacher? Opponents? What did he do, to become so extraordinary? He shouldn’t be! He did nothing! He does nothing!”

It Konatsu is here to stay and if opportune situation will come, it may be good idea to put some pressure on differences between him and Ranma and their fighting styles. Some definite character traits beyond archetypical a) poor and unable to deal with money b) Ukyo obsessed c) Super ninja d) perfect girl despite not being girl, would be usefull. Maybe some details of past assignments. Some part regrets. Did Konatsu killed in the past? If so, then how did he deal with it? Or a reason why Konatsu family was still poor, even with genius ninja in it.

If wizards are extension of Silver Millennium, then this extension is in a very, very sorry state. As far as they progressed in area of magic, the ministry is plain idiotic, wizards are largely ignorant and bigoted, and actual number of wizards is frighteningly small. It is pale, pale shadow of Silver Millenium.

Still, pale shadow or not - I wonder how Setsuna’s plan changed now. Meaning – is Ranma still that important at all, when Setsuna have access to wizards? After all, a well trained wizard (from HP realm) may well compete and be more effective than martial artists – there is simple way too many ways for magic to block physical skills. Teleportation for one (can’t catch, can’t defeat), area effects (even as simple as good sticking charm). Transfiguration into frog. Simply levitating and spinning in place. Poison gas + bubblehead charm. Or even invisible, silenced, animated flying portkeys, activating on touch to deposit target in the volcano. Sure, half of that can be detected, overcomed, avoided or countered by someone of Ranma caliber, but if wizard had opportunity prepare and ‘arm’ beforehand, creative and quick-footed one, would win against Ranma in more than half of ‘duels’. Sure, once Ranma’s get to hit, wizard is goner, but clever one would be able to avoid contact. Then it’s reflex and dexterity against countless separate and different ways to maim, confuse, kill or simply change.

On the other note, I seriously doubt one were to find such wizard in canon HP universe. Wizards and common sense don’t seem to mix together. :)

One thing I’m actually waiting for is confrontation between Ranma and Snape with his mind reading habits. Chi is after all as much life force, as spiritual strength. Whole lifestyle of martial artist is centered on physical and mental control. And also on iron, unbreakable strength of will, will to improve, to cross limitations, and win against the odds. Wizards as far as I can tell do not have >anything< to compare. Not even meditations.

Well, to be honest I would just love to see Snape getting mental trashing. :snigger:

Random question, Ozz: Do you save stuff that you've 'vented to crapspace' on your FFNet account, as you describe it there? ISTR there was an interesting bit there a few days ago...

Probably not the best place for a first post, but...

Really love this story! And LOVE how it involves Konatsu, a character who had potential, but came in too late in the game. But some things in this chapter I found confusing. For one, Ranma can see the dementors, but not Konatsu. So would this happen because of a ki sensitivity issue? Because it's stated a lot in the story that Ranma can't do magic. But that brings up another curious thing.

If Ranma can't do magic, why would the wands respond to his waves at all, let alone so powerfully? Muggles and Squibs can't use wands, or any magic. I remember that because of the thing with the school janitor. Also, if I recall, Ranma was checked over in the Silver Millenium, and was found to have no magic abilities. I assume, of course, that this is due again to his ki. (I could easily be wrong...)

But the train part just raised a lot of questions (however entertaining and amusing it was), because there's no clause as far as I know as to having to know death, etc. in order to see them like with the carriage pullers, right? Also, their very presence fills one with dread. I'm not sure if the neko-ken would be triggered by this, or what, so that's up to ( obviously) authors discretion. However, he does pull out a treat from the silver millenium, which would tempt me to believe he also kept the book he was given. Yet, Ozzallos stated at the end of chapter two in his notes that he did not take anything back to the future (pun intended) with him. I think it would be really neat to still have that book, since it could relegate Ranma to more of the "healer" position of the group, rather than a front-line fighter, which would be an interesting twist. But again, (obviously) authors discretion, which has already been made known to say that Ranma won't have the book -_- . I'm also slightly disappointed Ranma hasn't used the family sword yet. Maybe he didn't have it in stuff-space... Because the SM treat had to have come from Stuff-space, considering Ranma's been through several wardrobe changes, and had forgotten all about it. (again, easily be wrong)

The last thing that comes to mind is more of a nitpicking possible HP canon issue. I don't recall anyone in the book mentioning vampire activity being in England. In Europe, yes, but not England. Then again, Aurors are busy people, and vampire locations, etc. could be on a need to know basis with the common witches and wizards... looking forward to see how, if at all Ozz handles that. Not that it's needed, of course, I'm curious. (Also , Me + ? < Wrong)

On a very excited note, I'm positively giddy at the thought of someone from HP possibly joining the group. Not saying someone should, but it would be kinda sad to simply have the three visit and not make any solid, "fight by your side" allies. The most intriguing, however, will be the interactions within Helsing. What with the Vatican's regenerator(s), Alucard and the Helsing organization itself... And the story hasn't even neared CCS, though I know little about the show, and remember only a few scant pieces from the couple of episodes I saw.

And finally, just because it popped into my brain, I can't help but wonder if there might be a "Futabu-kun Change" cameo, what with Ranma going into the fashion industry and all the talk about Starlights, etc... Not saying it SHOULD happen, mind you, I'm just daydreaming.

Well, come to think of it, all this stuff appears way too "critique-ish" and probably isn't all that welcome, since this is a "preview" section, not a critique and comments section. Really, they're just questions I wanted to ask, because I love Ozz's work so much I'm too impatient to wait and read the possible explanations/character "introductions" in future chapters.

The wands probably reacted to the curse. After all, fanon says it's chaos magic.

I realize this should be an update, but another project has summoned me, so I'll just try to answer questions a bit without blowing the plot away.

Wands. Curse magic. Ranma cannot nor will not ever be able to control it.
Dementors. Similar issue. It's a minor passive benefit, which is why Konatsu can't see them.
Terror. Ranma's not a 13 year old kid. He's been through numerous life or death battles. Likewise, he can physically manifest confidence. I'm assuming he feels the effects and can be overpowered if found unprepared (such as the inital dementor scene). The Neko ken? <evil giggle>
Yes, I'll continue to expand on Ranma as a ki dancer and education.
Vampires are not part of HP canon.
You are person #2 to realize the Futabu-kun Change element. Yes, it will feature into the plot.
Ozz does save crapspace stuff. Probably won't post it all at once. But maybe.
Will address time turner's but they are not a major plot element. That said, i may just snipe your explanation myself ;)
