the First Chapter of Practical Mythology can be Found Here: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3613071/1/Practical_Mythology Practical Mythology Episode 2: Flaming Telepaths Travelers on a journey will meet new faces in the most unusual of places, that's part of the fun of a journey after all. But if you journey far from home you'll find a sensation that some people call culture shock. Ami and Ranma have started their journey, but now it's time to learn just what a strange place another person's mind can be. --- Ranma Saotome woke shortly after the crack of dawn as the sunlight touched his sleep-closed eyes. Upon waking up, he got out of bed, the familiar weight on his chest informing him that he was once more wearing his female form. This was not unusual, Ranma had lost count of the number of times Nabiki or Akane had splashed him in the middle of the night. What was unusual was the fact that he was sleeping not in a futon, but on a mattress in a western-style bed. Still, Ranma was not quite fully awake, having not experienced his morning douse of adrenalin from being flung out a second story window while asleep, or having a bucket of ice water thrown on him, so it can be forgiven that Ranma was running on muscle memory and didn't quite notice how odd the situation truly was. So it was that Ranma made his way to the bathroom unaware that he was still wearing the school uniform that he fell asleep in yesterday. He could not have realized, at such an early hour what a drastic change had befallen him yesterday, nor, could his sleep-addled mind have guessed what sort of consequences that change would have. No, it was not until he had gotten to the bathroom, a bathroom totally different from the one at the Tendo house, that he realized what was wrong. Ranma walked into the bathroom unaware, and turned on the cold water in the sink. He turned to the side where his toothbrush was sitting in a cup on the wall and picked it up using it and the toothpaste sitting on the rim of the sink to brush his teeth. Before shutting the cold water from the bathroom sink off, Ranma took a handful and splashed it on his face in hopes of waking himself up. He succeeded. It was only Ranma's history of bizarre surprises that kept him from shouting out at this new development, for though Ranma was in a female body, it certainly wasn't his female body. The face in the mirror was Japanese, and had long hair, but that was where the resemblance ended, this hair flowed unbound in black silky waves to the small of his back, unlike his own female form's braided and naturally crimson locks. He was slightly taller than he remembered, having gained about seven centimeters in height from his previous female form to reach his now current height of 150cm. Ranma had lost his crystal blue eyes in the change as well, but as he realized what other changes might have happened to him his now brown eyes widened in horror. Ranma quickly twisted the taps of the sink so that they now poured forth hot water from the spigot. Ranma was somewhat hesitant at the idea that he had lost his curse in the bargain, but he steeled himself and plunged his hand beneath the stream of hot water. He didn't change. Ranma backed away in shock and collapsed into a sitting position on the shut lid of the toilet, “It's gone.” He muttered to himself. “It's just like that time with Herb, only worse.” Ranma steeled his nerves as he made a vow. “I have to get out of here. No matter who I have to fight, I have to get my old body back.” his jaw set, Ranma began to run through the rest of his morning routine, bathing and washing his new body before walking back to Ami's bedroom to look for a suitable outfit for working out. The bedroom, now that he looked at it, was rather palatial for a Japanese apartment, it was a bit bigger than the guest room that he and his pops had shared back at the Tendo Dojo. Ami's bed was agains the east wall, with it's own window leading to a fire escape just outside. There was a large desk complete with a rather impressive looking desktop, and a walk-in closet with a chest of drawers inside. Framing the walls were bookcases, filled with books of all shapes and sizes, just a casual look around revealed a few titles that caught Ranma's eye, War and Peace, The Five Rings, and Grey's Anatomy were just a few of the many and varied books that stocked Ami's shelves. But now wasn't the time to wander, Ranma walked straight towards the walk-in closet looking for something suitable to wear for his morning training. Now more than ever he needed to train, because he could no longer rely on his own body's natural instincts and the strength that he meticulously ingrained in his muscles. First he would have to see what this new body was capable of, and then, he would have to begin the whole process of training from the beginning. Picking up a light blue sweat suit Ranma shook his head, Hit wasn't what he would prefer, but it would do nicely for now. Now it was just a matter of getting changed and taking the fire escape to the Roof of the building to train. --- When Ami awoke the day after her birthday she was already moving. It wasn't the first time she had experienced the feeling of awakening to a body that's already completely awake, and already in use. The slight familiarity of the sensation from her adventures the day before didn't make it any more pleasant. Ami wasn't morning person, but even she quickly sprang fully awake when she realized what was happening. “It wasn't a dream.” Ami uttered the sentence with mixed emotions. There was shock that Ranma was still in her head, even half awake she could feel him moving her muscles in ways that she had never tried before. There was fear in her words too, fear that there was no way to reverse the situation, fear that she would be stuck this way forever with a voice in her head that could use her body against her will without her even noticing. The feeling that that particular train of thought brought wasn't at all comforting. Ami felt her body wind down in it's exercises as Ranma began to speak through her mouth again, panting heavily. “You're awake then? You're a really heavy sleeper Ami-chan. I've been up for a while exercising. You're kinda out of shape. Don't worry, I can fix that though. We'll be in shape to fight the guy that did this in no time.” It was then that Ami noticed, she was no longer dressed in the school uniform that she fell asleep in. “You undressed me while I was asleep!” the young girl shouted out indignantly as she surveyed the light blue sweatsuit she was wearing. If they were still inside the shout might have woken her mother. Fortunately, since Ranma had moved them onto the roof of the building in order to figure out what he needed work on in order to get back into what he thought of as the proper shape, no one heard Ami's outraged cry of indignation. A torrent of emotions flowed through the young girl as Ami realized what must have happened. This voice in her head, this male voice, had seen her naked! Who knows what else he had done while she was sleeping? She felt violated, and more than a bit powerless at the revelation, but more than that, she felt angry. Ranma was of course completely oblivious to Ami's feelings, but years of experience in exactly this sort of situation had taught him what not to say. So it should come as no surprise that Ranma didn't state the first thing on his mind 'It's nothing I ain't seen before', nor even the second thing on his mind 'Eh, I've seen better.' Ranma restrained himself long enough for a third thought to come into his head. “There wasn't much I could do about it, you weren't awake, and it's not like I could just sleep, I needed ta practice, and your uniform needed to be washed, ya fell asleep in it last night.” Ami breathed out heavily. It's true, there wasn't much he could do. And if he had been telling the truth yesterday it wasn't anything he hadn't seen before. But this incident only firmed her resolve to find out why this had happened and reverse it. Maybe Usagi would know what happened? After all, Usagi was a Sailor Senshi too. Thoughts of Usagi brought Ami to a halt. School, what time was it? She couldn't afford to miss school. “Ranma, we will deal with this later. Right now I need to get ready for school. Once we get there we can... well, something will come up so we can fix this. I hope.” Taking control of her own body for the first time since she awoke, Ami walked over to the fire escape and climbed down into her penthouse apartment window. There really wasn't much she could say right now, she'd have to think of something during class. --- Rei Hino was troubled as she walked from the Hikawa Shrine to her classes at T*A Junior High-School. Her dreams had been disturbing recently, visions of strife and violence were nothing new to Rei, she had spent her whole life dealing with her ability to predict war and fighting, but these new visions were different. Instead of viewing them as an observer, this time she felt as if she were living the visions herself. Almost as if she were fighting. That wasn't the only strange thing about these new visions though, they were clear in a way she hadn't experienced before. She could see her allies, though odd as it sounded they seemed to be other young girls, and she could see the strange inhuman appearances of her enemies. If that were all there was too it then Rei would dismiss these visions as nothing more than strange and frightening dreams, but the feeling she had gotten so often before. The feeling that “this is real” that her visions will come to pass. That was something she couldn't ignore. The troubling rumors of the disappearances of those who rode the 6:00 o'clock Sendai Hill bus did nothing to calm the young miko's fears. She knew they were more than rumors, just yesterday the parents of Mimi, a frequent visitor at the shrine, had visited her and asked for her help in tracking her down. She had disappeared on the 6:00 o'clock bus. They thought she had just run away and that maybe she had come to the shrine at some point. They asked if she had seen the young girl, but Rei was unable to help them. It wasn't proof, but it was the latest in a series of several incidents with the 6:00 o'clock bus. Rei shook her head, now was not the time to think such thoughts, she had a full day of school ahead of her and she needed to be calm in order to withstand the coming onslaught. It didn't matter that Mimi's parents thought that Rei was hiding something, that they thought that she might have something to do with the mysterious disappearance of their daughter. None of that mattered, it was just another rumor to add to the growing collection about her. She was used to it by now. As the raven-haired girl walked to the end of the block she heard the distinctive sound of running and heavy breathing that alerted her to company. “Furahata-san, perhaps you should get up earlier so that you do not have to run to make it to school?” Unazuki Furahata shook her head. “Don't be like that Rei-chan! You know I was only running to catch up with you.” Rei frowned, looking over at Unazuki. The young girl presented an odd picture. Dressed in the black and red seifuku of T*A Girls Academy, her hair was obviously bleached at one point and then redyed red, making her look rather odd with it pulled back into an orange-red ponytail and several bangs framing her face. Unazuki had been the closest thing to a friend that Rei had had growing up, and remained so at T*A Girls Academy. She had stood by the young miko even in the face of the rumors about Rei, and Rei appreciated that loyalty, even if she couldn't show it. Rei was all too aware that the nail that stands up must be pounded down. Most of the times it wasn't even a conscious decision by the people that mocked and avoided her. But it was a fact, it happened. Whenever Rei made a friend the others would be there to tell her new friend just who “that freaky shrine maiden” was. Rei didn't want that happening to her one true companion over the years, so she kept her distance from Unazuki, she never really let her in for fear that the girl would leave, or worse, become subject to the same treatment as Rei herself. It wasn't fair, but nothing in life was. So Rei continued walking, barely acknowledging Unazuki's comments as she started to talk about her job at the Crown Fruit Parlor that her parent owned. Neither of the girls noticed the two Ravens circling overhead, watching them as they walked to school. --- Under normal circumstances the walk to school would have been one of the most relaxing times of day for Ami Mizuno, a time when she could gather her thoughts and prepare for the day ahead. These were not normal circumstances. The presence of Ranma in the back of her mind was not something that the young glasses-clad girl could ignore even if Ranma did his best to make himself unnoticeable. That's not to say that Ami Mizuno was not preparing for the day ahead as she walked to school, she was. It's just that the nature of her preparations were nothing like her normal routine. Specifically, Ami Mizuno was discussing with the unwanted passenger in her head, how to tell Usagi Tsukino about a fear that she didn't even have for most of yesterday. “Ranma, I appreciate your not wanting to divulge your deepest fear to someone you just met, but Usagi is my friend, and if you don't tell her then there's no way that we won't encounter Luna. If Usagi was telling the truth before and Luna really does talk then the chances of us not meeting her are even less. Now help me figure out what to tell her, because somehow I have the feeling that the explanation that 'Ever since yesterday I have had a teenage boy who is deathly afraid of cats stuck in my head' is not going to cut it.” Ranma nodded Ami's head, causing the glasses-clad girl to startle a bit as she remembered that Ranma wasn't just some person she was talking to inside her head, he had more than a bit of control of her own body, enough to hijack it earlier that morning in fact. Ranma, ignorant of the train of thought running through Ami's mind, responded. “I guess that's true. We're gonna haveta tell her something. We could tell her the truth.” Ami Mizuno looked incredulous as she responded to the sound of her own voice. “The truth? I just told you that the truth is a horrible idea! Why should we tell her the truth?” Ranma shook Ami's head “Not that truth, the real truth. You know, how I got the fear, my pops training me in martial arts since I could walk. And the Neko-ken training. That way your friend won't haveta wonder why we know martial arts.” Ami was a bit shocked, Ranma certainly sounded uneducated, but his solution to her problem was nothing short of genius, it solved not only the problem close at hand but also covered them for future difficulties. Ranma may be uneducated, but he certainly wasn't unintelligent. Ami Mizuno made a mental note to watch out for Ranma, he was clever, and he certainly wasn't what he seemed at first glance. “That is a fabulous solution. That's what we'll do then. When I see Usagi I'll tell her just that.” Ami nodded, now sure of her course for at least the immediate present as she saw the concrete facade of her school rise up before her. She couldn't prepare for everything in the future. But today, at least, looked to be fairly smooth sailing for now. --- Usagi Tsukino was not a light sleeper. Not even becoming a Sailor Senshi could change that about the odango-headed girl. So it should come as no surprise that Usagi's alarm clock had already rang almost 12 times so far this morning, each time accompanied by a slender female arm reaching out from beneath the warmth and safety of the blankets that protected it and pressing the sleep button on said alarm clock. This whole scene would have repeated for the 13th time were it not for the entrance of Usagi's mother Ikkuko Tsukino, into her daughter's bedroom. “Usagi! It's time for school! Usagi! Wake up!” Usagi's answer consisted of a low groaning coming from beneath the covers. Ikuko was not amused. “Usagi! Wake up! You're going to be late!” Usagi continued to lie there half asleep. “That's it!” Usagi's mother stated as she stalked towards the bed, “I warned you! Now get UP!” And with that Ikkuko tugged hard on the blankets, pulling them, and her daughter wrapped within them, onto the floor with a loud thud. “Aw... Mom... just 5 more minutes...” Usagi complained from the floor. Her mother shook her head, her long black hair swaying from side to side in its ponytail as she did so. “No Usagi. You've already had 2 hours. No more. If you don't hurry up and get dressed you'll miss breakfast. Now get dressed.” with that said Ikuko turned around, leaving her blanket-wrapped daughter on the floor of the room as she went down to grab some of the breakfast she had prepared before her husband and son ate it all. When Luna entered through Usagi's open window five minutes later, the room was a flurry of motion, and Usagi was pulling on the last article of her school uniform, her skirt. “Usagi?” the cat asked, “Usagi!” the girl in question ignored her as she pulled on her sailor blouse. Luna waited for Usagi to finish getting dressed. Finally, Usagi Tsukino was almost ready, she only had to pull her long black hair into her trademark odango and she'd be ready to rush off to school. Now, Luna thought to herself, was the time to get her errant charge's attention. “Usagi!” Startled, Usagi tsukino let go of her hair allowing it to fall back into a straight waterfall of raven tresses. “Ah! Why'd you surprise me like that Luna? I need hurry so I can get ready for class!” Luna glowered at her charge, “Usagi! I just remembered what you and Ami need to do as Sailor Senshi!” Usagi started putting up her hair again. “Maa, Luna! That's not important right now, we can talk after school. Now I need to get to class so I can see Ami-chan again! Besides, I already know what we need to do, we need to fight these Youma that keep draining people's energy!” With that Usagi Tsukino finished putting up her hair and grabbed her messenger bag before rushing downstairs to grab breakfast and run off to school. Luna glowered at the door as she spoke to the empty room, sounding almost dejected. “But, I need to tell Usagi that that's not the reason she's a Sailor Senshi. I just remembered, she needs to find the Maboroshi no Ginzuisho and keep it from the enemy or else they could use it to destroy the world. But apparently keeping the enemy from destroying the world isn't as important to as going to school with her friends. Hmmph. Usagi won't be back until school ends, I might as well go out and patrol a bit, who knows, maybe I'll find that mysterious Sailor V.” --- School for Ranma was surprisingly quiet. So far half the day had gone by and nothing of note had happened, there was no teacher out to drain his energy, no insane martial artists out for his blood. The principal wasn't immediately evident either, but from what he had gleaned from Ami, the man seemed relatively sane, if a bit imposing, and he certainly wasn't about to interrupt classes in order to throw pineapple shaped bombs at students. In short, Ranma was bored. But coming up was Ranma's favorite part of school besides Physical Education. It was lunchtime. Ami on the other hand was almost at her wits end. In the back of her mind she wondered whether she was insane, or at the very least, whether Ranma was. The sort of questions he asked her about her school would be comical if it didn't sound like he was actually serious about them. What sort of school did he attend where the teachers drained energy from students for wrong answers? If it weren't for the fact that her after-school teacher had tried to do just that to her entire class yesterday Ami would have thought Ranma was insane for even entertaining the possibility. As it was she was forced to consider the idea as if it were a serious possibility. That more than anything worried Ami because it indicated that her normal frame of reference for reality might be completely useless to her now. And while Ranma might be more prepared for this new brand of insanity that had entered her life, it seemed that he was utterly at a loss for how to deal with normal situations. It was at this point in time that the idea occurred to Ami that perhaps Ranma's existence in her head was something arranged by some higher power to help her deal with these recent events. Ami hoped that was true, because the other, equally likely possibility was that Ranma was a character of her own creation, a figment of what must be her own fractured mind. That worried Ami, was Ranma a separate personality that she herself created to deal with this madness? Were the events of yesterday all a hallucination? A symptom of a psychotic break? Ami had made the mistake of asking Ranma earlier, the martial artist had told Ami definitively that he “wasn't some sorta figment”, Somehow that only made Ami less sure of her sanity. Usagi was oblivious to the inner turmoil that wracked her new friend as she sat, preparing to eat with Naru Osaka and a few other girls at a table made by moving their desks together. Usagi was happy, she enjoyed eating with her friends, but there was something missing. Taking a look around the room, the odango-haired girl spotted whet she was missing. “Ami-chan!” she shouted at her new glasses-wearing friend. “Come eat with us Ami-chan!” Usagi's voice managed to rouse Ami from her musings about her sanity and assure her that if nothing else, at least the events of yesterday seemed to have actually happened. What other reason would Usagi be calling for her to sit with her and her popular friends at lunch? Ami considered taking Usagi up on her offer, but the sight of Naru Osaka glaring at her assured her that if she were to accept Usagi's offer, she would most definitely not be welcome. Ami smiled sadly at Usagi, “Thank you Usagi-san, but I'm afraid I cannot accept. Perhaps another time?” And with that Ami Mizuno gathered up her lunch and headed out of the classroom to have lunch on the roof of the school. --- Gurio Umino was a troubled boy. Not in the usual sense the term is used in mind you, he didn't get into fights, he wasn't the sort to do drugs or get into trouble. In fact, all things considered, Gurio Umino was a bit of a nerd. No, Gurio Umino's troubles, like those of so many high school boys, were girl related. Umino's problem was that he was shy, nervous really, he just couldn't gather up the courage to speak to the girl of his dreams, the closest he could come to was to watch her during class, and to have lunch on the same school roof as her, in a sort of silent unstated companionship. But today would be different, or so Gurio hoped. Upon talking his problem over with his father, his father had suggested a course of action, befriend Ami first, get to know her, and then, once he was comfortable enough around her to relax, he could build his way up to asking her out. So today would be the day that Gurio Umino would talk to Ami Mizuno. Today he would take that first giant leap, from stranger, to acquaintance. But what to talk about? His father had some advice here too for Umino, “Just be yourself. Talk about the things that interest you. You're an interesting kid, don't worry she'll be interested.” So when Umino walked out onto the roof and saw Ami Mizuno, his reaction was different from that of any other day. Any other day he would sit several meters away, but today, Gurio walked over to Ami Mizuno and asked in what he hoped was a confident voice “Do you mind if I sit with you?” Ami Mizuno looked up. Gurio Umino was taken a bit aback, were Ami's eyes always such a startling shade of blue and he had just never noticed? They must have been, they couldn't have been colored contacts because she was wearing the same thin wireframe glasses as always, and what reason would there be to wear glasses if you were wearing contacts as well? As Umino looked closer, he couldn't help but notice the turmoil in those shining blue orbs. They were a deep blue, but they seemed to him to be troubled, like the sea during a storm. All of a sudden, looking into Ami Mizuno's eyes, everything that Umino had planned before hand went by the wayside. He had forgotten that he had even had a plan to begin with. The only thing that Gurio Umino could say was “Do you want to talk about it?” Ami closed her eyes and breathed in and out a bit before opening them once more and smiling slightly. “No, I... I am sorry but it is a private matter. But please, sit down.” The young boy let out a deep breath that he didn't know he was holding, he realized that Ami Mizuno wasn't about to tell him a personal problem in their first conversation, but he still felt a bit disappointed that she hadn't let him in. Suddenly he remembered his goal, “Er, do you want to talk about something else then?” Ami smiled that sweet slight smile once more. It was beautiful, innocent, sweet, shy, and just so captivating that Gurio Umino found himself speaking without thinking once more. “You're really cute when you smile.” The reaction wasn't one he had expected, Ami flinched as if suddenly shocked, almost as if she were remembering a half forgotten memory from another lifetime entirely. Then, suddenly the girl closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and spoke once more. “How about we talk about something else?” It was a polite dismissal of his feelings, Gurio knew what it was, but he hoped that maybe it only meant that he had spoken too soon, moved too quickly. So he attempted to back track. “Something else then? Have you heard the rumors about people disappearing on the 6:00 o'clock Sendai Hill bus then?” Ami's head perked up in sudden interest, and something seemed different about her, as if her whole demeanor had changed. “No, I haven't, can you tell me about it? That sounds interesting.” Suddenly everything was the same as it had been a few seconds earlier, and Ami was back to normal as if nothing had changed, the only lingering hint of anything different was the slight hint of irritation in her facial expression, it was almost too faint for Umino to pick out, but there was something there. Still, whatever was bothering Ami didn't seem to involve him. She seemed if anything, preoccupied, as if she was only paying him half her attention. The only thing he could really do would be to tell her the rumor and hope that it was interesting enough to get him her full attention. “Well, you know the Sendai Hill bus? The one that goes past the Hikawa Shrine? Well, every so often, maybe one a week, an entire bus-load of people will disappear on the 6:00 o'clock bus. The bus will just vanish, right after it stops at the shrine.” Ami seemed genuinely interested now, “Really? Does anyone know why that happens? Are there any theories?” Gurio smiled excitedly, this is where he was in his element. If there was anything Gurio Umino was good at it was collecting rumors and theories, all the strange things going on lately, from the odd chain of jewel heists to the disturbing incident at that Juku that happened yesterday, if there was something odd going on, Gurio would look it over, research it, find what people were saying about it. That was part of what got Umino labeled around school as a bit of an odd ball, a sort of conspiracy theory nut, always talking about these strange things that couldn't be real, giving odd explanations that couldn't have happened about things like monsters causing children to faint while at Juku. “There are no real explanations, but there are a couple rumors. Some people say that the miko of the shrine might be responsible. She's made odd predictions about trouble and strife before that have always come true. Some people say that she may be causing it. The other rumor I've heard is that the very air opens up and swallows the bus. Some people say the bus must have just gotten lost, or takes a different route, since it's the same driver in every incident, but if that were true that the people on the bus would return home eventually wouldn't they? And so far no one has.” Ami's expression seemed to shift a bit rapidly, as if she were arguing with herself about something. And just than the bell began to ring signaling the end of lunch. “Ah. Thank you Umino-San.” Ami said as she began to pack up the remains of her lunch. “It was pleasant talking to you, and I hope we can do so again, but it seems that lunch is over.” Gurio smiled widely. Ami Mizuno herself had just told him that she enjoyed talking to him! And would like to do so again! “Thank you! It was great talking to you too. Maybe we can talk again like this tomorrow?” Ami just smiled that same slight smile in response as she walked towards the door to the stairs down to class. “I think I would Enjoy that Umino-san. I think I would like that very much.” And with that Gurio Umino watched as the object of his desire walked through the door and down the stairs, the door to the roof swinging shut behind her. ________________ The Chapter isn't Complete. But I figured I'd Post up what I have currently in order to get some C&C that might inspire me to write a bit more on it. I'll post new sections once I finish them. |

Pretty interesting plot. The only thing that really sticks out is the bit about Ranma being uneducated because while he's not the smartest person he was passing his classes. |

That's odd because the translation that I read said he passed that. I remember Genma looking at the test scores and saying that it would do. |

While I am of the opinion that Ranma is fairly educated, that's not really what I want to comment about. Highly educated people can come off as uneducated and complete morons can trick people into thinking that they are intelligent, so I don't mind Ami thinking Ranma is not educated. The thing is Ami doesn't seem to be an overly judgmental person, what did Ranma say or do that would make her think of him as being uneducated (did I miss something)? (ranma was happy with his test scores and him failing is very unlikely since Ranma cares about how people think about him and would not want people to think him dumb). I also find it weird Ranma asking about the principal and if the teachers drain students, because even in Ranma's universe that stuff is weird and not what he would expect. He did go to schools before furniken and even furniken was not all that weird until later. The only real anomaly is that the schools didn't mind fighting on campus (in real life that is a significant problem in Japan - bullying and people fighting at school - to the point that it has made international news occasionally because of kids committing suicide because they are bullied or being beaten to death by bullies). |

So, It's been a while, but I'm back to work on Practical Mythology. Unfortunately I didn't check this board before I started work, and I seemed to have lost half of what I wrote. So I rewrote it. The tone is rather different and I could use some advice about which is better in terms of sequence of events. I plan on blending them of course, but which elements should be prominent is a big question. Practical Mythology Episode 2: Flaming Telepaths Travelers on a journey will meet new faces in the most unusual of places, that's part of the fun of a journey after all. But if you journey far from home you'll find a sensation that some people call culture shock. Ami and Ranma have started their journey, but now it's time for them to learn just what a strange place another person's mind can be. Ranma wasn't fully awake yet. He hadn't experienced his morning dose of adrenalin from being flung out a second story window by his father, nor had Akane thrown a bucket of ice water at him him. So it can be forgiven if Ranma was running on muscle memory and didn't quite notice how odd the situation truly was. Ranma made his way to the bathroom unaware that he was still wearing the school uniform that he fell asleep in yesterday. Ami's bed was against the east wall, with its own window leading to a fire escape just outside. There was a large desk complete with a rather impressive looking desktop, and a walk-in closet with a chest of drawers inside. Framing the walls were bookcases, filled with books of all shapes and sizes, just a casual look around revealed a few titles that caught Ranma's eye, War and Peace, The Five Rings, and Gray's Anatomy were just a few of the many and varied books that stocked Ami's shelves. Picking up a light blue sweat suit Ranma shook his head, it wasn't what he would prefer, but it would do nicely for now. Now it was just a matter of getting changed and taking the fire escape to the roof of the building to train. --- When Ami awoke the day after her birthday she was already moving. It wasn't the first time she had experienced the feeling of awakening to a body that was already completely awake, and already in use. It was true, there wasn't much he could do. School! What time was it? If that were all there was to it then Rei would dismiss these visions as nothing more than strange and frightening dreams, but the feeling she had gotten so often before. The feeling that “this is real” that her visions will come to pass. That was something she couldn't ignore. Dressed in the black and red seifuku of T*A Girls Academy, her hair was obviously bleached at one point and then re-dyed red, making her look rather odd with it pulled back into an orange-red ponytail and several bangs framing her face. --- Under normal circumstances the walk to school would have been one of the most relaxing times of day for Ami Mizuno. These were not normal circumstances. The presence of Ranma in the back of her mind was not something that the young glasses-clad girl could ignore even if Ranma did his best to make himself unnoticable. She hoped Usagi would come by, she really needed someone to talk to about what had happened. If anyone could explain Ranma's presence to her it would be Usagi right? Afterall it was her talking cat that had given Ami her transformation bracelet. Even as the thought ran through her head she felt a shudder of fear course through her. “Yeah, about that.” Ami could feel her mouth moving without her consent brutally reminding her of her new resident. “I can't go near that...” Ami could feel her body tense up in fear, “that cat. I can't.” “Oh...” Ami nodded. She remembered just what Ranma had told her yesterday, about how his father had trained him in that horrible technique. With the frightening amount of control the man had over her body, she couldn't risk him going insane and acting like a cat until he decided to fall asleep. She would just have to warn Usagi about her newly acquired fear. If only she could just figure out how. --- Usagi Tsukino was not a light sleeper. Not even becoming a Sailor Senshi could change that about the odango-headed girl. So it should come as no surprise that Usagi's alarm clock had already rang three times so far this morning, each time accompanied by a slender female arm reaching out from beneath the warmth and safety of the blankets that protected it and pressing the sleep button on said alarm clock. This whole scene would have repeated for the fourth time were it not for the entrance of Usagi's mother Ikkuko Tsukino, into her daughter's bedroom. “No Usagi. You've already had half an hour. “Usagi, there's something odd about that other senshi, Sailor Mercury.” Luna called out as she landed on the floor, startling the young girl into tripping over her skirt and falling down. “Ah! Luna! You need to warn me when you do that! You're like a ninja, all sneaky until you strike!” The cat blinked trying to figure out just what the girl before her meant. In the end she decided to ignore the outburst, after all she was a busy cat, and Usagi didn't have much time before she would be late for school. “Yes... As I was saying, there's something odd about Sailor Mercury. Did you notice how quickly she dealt with that youma?” Usagi nodded remembering how graveful the other girl was, punching and kicking the youma as she jumped around like an acrobat. “At first I thought it was just her remembering her past life,” Luna continued. “but from what I remember the senshi all used magical attacks to fight, not their hands and feet.” Usagi finished getting dressed and turned to her talking pet. “So? What does it matter if Ami can fight?” Luna frowned. “I don't know, but it's weird. She didn't seem to know how to fight before I gave her her transformation bracelet. You should ask her about it.” Usagi looked at Luna. “It was sort of strange, she was so polite and formal, but after she transformed she was much more casual with me. Almost as if she were a completely different person. I'll ask her Luna, but I don't want to scare her away, she seems so lonely.” With that, Usagi left the room, heading down to grab a quick breakfast before running out the door to school. After all, she didn't want to be late, and if she was early enough she might be able to catch Ami before classes started. --- School couldn't pass quickly enough for Ami. While normally she enjoyed classes, her new found passenger didn't and his boredom translated into an abundance of nervous energy for her. Part of her knew she was being unfair. That Ranma wasn't the only reason she was nervous. Usagi had run into the classroom just before class, so Ami hadn't had an opportunity to ask the girl about what was happening to her. Between Ranma's surprise that the black haired schoolgirl was the same person as the blonde from the day before, and the lack of time, Ami had only been able to say hello before the teacher had started class. But things were looking up, Usagi had invited her to have lunch with her and her friends. Ami had never been invited to eat with anyone before, her intelligence had isolated her. And she didn't have the courage to break that isolation of her own accord. She feared rejection, but now she felt like she was finally being accepted. “Ami-chan!” Ami looked up at the familiar form of address, that had to be Usagi. She was the only girl Ami knew of that addressed her so familiarly. “Come over here and have lunch with us Ami-chan!” Ranma, roused from his slight learning inflicted daze by the prospect of lunch looked over. Usagi was sitting with three of her friends, Ami could recognize Naru Osaka, but the other two girls names escaped her. “Usagi, why are you calling her over?” Naru asked, “she's so snobbish and strange.” Ami violently seized control of her body back from Ranma, trying to control the shaking in her hands. Her first friend and already someone was turning her against her. Ami couldn't deal with it. “I have to... I have to go review.” she said, grabbing her lunch and dashing out the door of the classroom. She was gone when Usagi turned to Naru to berate her friend for insulting Ami, and she didn't see Usagi pick up her lunch and follow after her to the roof. --- “What's wrong?” Ranma asked Ami, as she settled in on a corner of the roof to cry. “Weren't ya gonna ask that girl about what happened?” Ami could barely think, tears rolled down her cheeks. Snobbish? Strange? She wasn't snobbish! But she was strange now wasn't she. It wasn't normal to have boys living in your head, not even among magical girls. She couldn't ask Usagi about it, not any more. Not after what Naru had said. Usagi didn't seem like she had the same problem, and if she didn't then it really was strange. She couldn't let Usagi know. If she did, Usagi wouldn't want to be friends anymore. Who would blame her? No one would want to associate with a freak like Ami. “Ami-chan?” Ranma could tell Ami was in no condition to talk, her thoughts were almost incoherent, worrying about how Usagi would leave her, and how she couldn't ask Usagi about Ranma cause then the girl would think she was a freak. But Usagi was here now, and clearly worried, they had to say something to her. “Hey, Usagi-chan.” Ranma said trying to damp down Ami's tears. The result came out more like a sob than he hoped, but it was still intelligible. “I'm sorry about what Naru-chan said. She didn't mean it! She's just never met you before! You should come have lunch with us. I'm sure if she got to know you she'd like you.” Ranma swallowed, he had no idea how to deal with this, Ami was sobbing less now, but if such a mild comment by Naru had set her off how could she possibly sit through lunch? Luckily, between Ranma's covering for her, and Usagi's apology, Ami could pull herself together a bit. “I'm sorry Tsukino-san.” She said, promting Usagi to wonder where she went wrong, just a second ago Ami was caling her Usagi-chan, but now she was back to being formal. “I wouldn't want to spoil Osaka-san's lunch, you should-” But Usagi didn't let her finish pushing her away, “That's okay Ami-chan. If you don't want to eat with Naru-chan right now, I understand. We can eat up here.” Ami was shocked, but Ranma wasn't. Keen to start eating, and unwilling to let Usagi go without at least asking her to keep her cat away, ranma responded. “That sounds good. Lets eat.” Usagi blinked, having already started coming up with arguments to eat with the girl. Her prompt acceptance was surprising, especially her enthusiasm considering the fact that her cheeks were still soaked from her tears. Deciding not to think to hard on it in case it upset her new friend Usagi tried to encourage the ace student instead. “Don't worry about Naru-chan, she just doesn't know how amazing you are. I mean, You were so pretty taking on that Youma yesterday, you looked like a gymnast or an acrobat. It was incredible! Where'd you learn to do that?” Always eager to talk about himself, Ranma answered almost without thinking, “Well, my pops has been training me in Anything Goes since I could walk. We traveled all over Japan learning under different masters. I practice all the time cause I got ta be the best in all the world.” Ami was shocked. Her father wasn't a martial artist, he was a painter! And she had barely been outside Minato-ku, much less all over Japan. But the more she thought about it the more it made sense. What Ranma said was true, it had happened to him, so it would be much easier to remember than a complex story. And Ami wasn't about to explain Ranma's presence to Usagi like they had agreed before class, not after what Naru said. Eager to capitalize on Ranma's success Ami resumed control, “Actually Tsukino-san. Beofre my father left, he trained me in something called the Neko-ken. The technique has made me deathly afraid of... cats. If you could keep your cat away from me?” Usagi looked up, puzzled, “Luna-San? But she's really nice!” Ami breathed in to steady herself. It wasn't for show, the sudden turn of conversation had made Ranma incredibly nervous, and what she was about to explain wouldn't help at all in that respect. “I know Luna is a nice, cat.” Ami paused. “But the training has made me afraid of all cats, no matter how nice they are.” “What sort of training could do that?” Usagi asked puzzled, at least Ami's formal manner made sense here. It must be hard to talk about something you were afraid of. “The training involved lowering me into a pit full of starving cats while wrapped in fish sausages repeatedly until I learned the technique. It is a powerful technique, but if I see a cat, I remember the training for the technique.” Usagi was shocked. How could her father do something like that to such a nice girl like Ami! “That's Horrible! Don't worry, I'll tell Luna and she'll keep away from you! Ah! But how will we meet to talk about what's happening with the youma?” Ami smiled, relieved that that problem was settled, and more than a little gratified to see Usagi's sympathies for her, even if it was really Ranma who had done the Neko-ken training. “You gave me a phone yesterday didn't you?” Ami said, pulling out the camera-phone that Usagi had given her. “You can call me on this if you learn anything new. Or, I can meet with you normally, as long as Luna isn't around. I hope my fear doesn't stop us from being friends?” Ami asked hopefully. “Of course not Ami-chan!” Ami smiled. “You should go back downstairs. I'm sure your other friends are worried about you.” Usagi looked at Ami. She seemed much better now, her tears had dried and she was smiling. “Are you Sure Ami-chan? You could eat lunch with us you know?” Ami's smile turned a bit sadder, “No, That's okay Tsukino-san. I enjoy eating on the roof, and I'd like to get some studying done before class starts again.” not to mention the fact that she wasn't sure how much more she could take of Usagi's friend Naru. This whole day was already one long emotional roller coaster. “Okay, if you insist.” Usagi smiled. “I'll see you in class then!” she said, as she headed downstairs to rejoin her friends. As she watched Usagi Go Ami Smiled. It seemed she had at least one friend now. --- Luna didn't know what to think. The girl was obviously lying, she didn't have any fear of cats yesterday when Luna was rubbing against her legs. But the tension in the girl's voice, the way she became so formal, the strain in her muscles when she was talking about it, even from where she was hidden just inside the stairway to the roof, it was clear that Ami was at the very least scared of cats, although maybe not to the extent the training she described should have caused. There was something very odd about Sailor Mercury, but Luna couldn't quite put her paw on what it was. Still, as long as the girl was helping Usagi fight youma and find the princess, there didn't seem to be any cause for concern. Luna needed to think about this some more. There was a boy joining Ami now, perhaps that would shed some light on the situation? --- “Ah, Mizuno-san right?” Ami looked up surprised, there was a boy standing next to her, plain looking, wearing a pair of large plastic rimmed glasses, she thought she recognized him from her class, but she couldn't put a name to the face. “Umino, Gurio Umino. I sit three rows behind you?” Ami seemed to perk up. “Ah, Umino-san. What can I do for you?” Umino hesitated. He saw what happened downstairs, that's why he had come up, to cheer up Ami. He'd had a crush on her for the longest while and it had seemed like the perfect chance to help her out and get to know her, but when he had finally gotten to the roodf, Usagi was already helping her out, so he had waited and watched, and when Usagi left, he had continued with his plan. But In waiting he had heard what Ami said her father had done to train her. He wasn't certain how the issue had come up, but more so, he had no idea what to say to something like that, and he didn't want to even mention it in case Ami accused him of spying on her. So instead he just asked “Do you mind if I sit with you?” “Sure.” Ami seemed to visibly relax, slouching a bit as he sat down, “So?” she asked. “Um...” Umino hadn't planned this far, he wasn't sure what to say. “Have you heard about the Phantom Bus?” Ami perked up “No, I haven't what is the Phantom Bus?” Umino didn't know why he had picked that to talk about, it was just a rumour he had heard earlier that day, he almost cursed himself for bringing it up. Maybe she'd think he was weird for looking into the supernatural like that? It certainly wasn't something you were supposed to say to impress girls. But Ami seemed interested, and this was the most attention she'd ever paid him, so It couldn't hurt to explain. “It seems that people have been seeing a buss run along the Sendai Hill route to the Hikawa shrine at 6:00. But there's no bus scheduled for that time. And even stranger, the buses seem to vanish. People who get on them just disappear and don't return.” Ami stared at him, “Really?” Umino nodded. “Yeah, they say the Shrine maiden for the Hikawa shrine curses the buses so they vanish. They say she has magical powers and a strong connection to the spirits.” Ami looked contemplative, shy. Then she looked up and smiled at him, a broad smile he'd never seen on her face before. “Thanks Umino. I'll look inta that. If you hear any other strange stuff be sure ta tell me okay?” Umino blinked and suddenly Ami was finished with her lunch and heading back into the classroom. Was that really the shy, incredibly polite Ami Mizuno? He wasn't sure what had happened, but she had invited him to talk to her again, so whatever it was, he was closer to her than he was before, and that was something worth smiling about. |

Strictly speaking, Principal Kuno was going to announce Ranma's "worst" score. Also, Ranma proves at least a minor proficiency in English, the class they were to receive their scores in, by becoming enraged by the "instructions" to disarm the balloon containing the test scores. Finally, Ranma's score on the test is at no point stated. So, we can infer that Ranma has at least enough grasp of English to read the words "Kiss Me" and that he doesn't want people to think he's dumb based on a bad test. Do remember that Ranma realistically, would have had to pass an entrance exam to attend Furinkan in the first place, and did so based on an education that is implied by the manga to have been sparse at best. |
