As I'm sure you've all heard by now, the creator of Dungeons and Dragons E. Gary Gygax has dropped below -10 HP. While you may sit there thinking, "Well, I've never played Dungeons and Dragons, so I'm kind of distant from it," you couldn't be more wrong. Without D&D, the Tolkien-esque world that we love so much would never have found it's niche in popular media. Sure, you may say that it would have happened eventually, what with the popularity of Tolkien himself, but Gary was the one who said, "People want to be a part of this world, not just read about it. I'm going to give them that." And he did, in the grandest style imaginable. What was to follow became the bread and butter of geeks and nerds, who came to produce the Generation X of gamers, that is to say, you and me. Those who came before us studied under the wing of Gary before branching off into books, television, comics and, of course, video games. Regardless of whether or not we've played D&D, we have been influenced by it, or by those who have built their careers and hobbies out of it. We all owe a debt of thanks to Gary, and in his honor, I'm going to do what I should have done many years ago: learn about and begin playing D&D. Be sure to check your local webcomics for updates. Penny Arcade has delivered their tribute, in typical grand style. Order of the Stick, a webcomic based entirely on D&D, has also presented a memoriam. Google them and read them, and roll a d20 for Gary. *rolls* 11.. bah. Just my luck. |

I've never really played D&D, although my friends and I used to play similar games, although the rules were usually whatever the GM (or "God" as we called it) felt like at the time. Still, I know the theory, and I greatly appreciate Gygax for his contribution to gaming (one of my favorite games, Knights of the Old Republic, uses a modified version of D&D as it's game engine, although it's all electronic). |
