A Carver Story

Caterina was a tall slender young woman who had long flowing red hair and green eyes. She had curves in all the right places and her ass was tight enough to bounce a quarter off of. She walked into County General with a smile on her face and a bounce in her step, she was very happy to be there. When the male staff saw her they couldn’t be more excited to help her out and they pushed their way up to the front desk just for a chance to be the first one to talk to her. Luka actually shoved Carter away from the front desk so she would have to talk to him first.
“How can I help you today?” He said in a polite tone of voice with a smile to match, she giggled slightly after seeing the reaction she got from all of the men, if only they knew why she was actually there. She brushed some hair behind her ear and smiled back at him, he was certainly cute and his accent made him sexy but she couldn’t see herself with him, she already knew too much about him.
“Yes, I’m looking for doctor Robert Romano.” She blushed slightly when his smile turned into a frown and then into a disgusted look.
“Why would you want to talk to him?” Was his reply, but before Caterina could say anything Weaver pushed Luka out of the way and took his place in front of her. She had heard quite a bit about Dr. Weaver and she wondered if the rumors were true as she read the name on the woman’s tag.
“What’s your complaint?” Weaver asked politely, she assumed that this was just another woman that Romano had harassed, but she assumed wrong. Caterina wondered why everyone was acting so weird about the man, was he really that bad when he was at work? She licked her lips and shook her head slightly, he couldn’t be that bad.
“There is no complaint.” She replied and then flipped her hair behind her shoulder with her right hand, “He’s my father.” The reaction she got next was one of utter shock, the staff that was standing around the desk went completely silent and she guessed that her father had never mentioned her to any of them. Weaver looked to Carter who just shrugged and shook his head, he hadn’t ever heard of her either. About this time Romano had showed up and he was looking at everyone just standing around doing nothing.
“Get to work people, you act like it’s so amazing that I have a daughter.” He announced as he made his way over to her they joined in a warm hug as the rest of the staff continued to look stunned, “Get to work!” It took a moment but they did just that even though they continued to keep one of their eyes on the interaction that Caterina was having with Romano.
“Hi daddy!” She giggled as she wrapped her arms around him, for the past year she had been studying in Tokyo. He knew that she was coming into town but he thought that she was going to be in later then she was, he never imagined that she would show up at the hospital. He didn’t care and he wasn’t mad, it was about time he revealed that he had a family. It amazed him that his co workers thought he was such a monster, he couldn’t believed they would react that way to her, “Why is everyone looking at us weird?”
“Because they are all idiots.” He replied loud enough for everyone to hear him, there were some groans and rolling of eyes but no one defended themselves to him, “How about we go to my office to talk okay?” She nodded and he wrapped an arm around her and lead her towards the elevators, they had a lot of catching up to do.

“John,” Weaver said softly ass she poured her coffee, “I’ve had three miscarriages already and I was thinking about something…” her voice dropped lower when Caterina walked into the lounge to get some coffee for herself. Carter put down the book he was reading and walked over to her so they could have a more private conversation. Caterina wasn’t very interested in what they were talking about anyway, so she continued to add sugar to her coffee while she hummed softly.
“What?”
“I was thinking that maybe we should try a surrogate mother.” She muttered but she was just loud enough for Caterina to hear, which was a good thing. She looked up and over to Weaver but then looked back to her drink wondering if she should say what she was thinking.
“Okay,” he paused and looked at Caterina before continuing, “Where do we find one of those?” Caterina continued to listen to them, in Tokyo she had been a surrogate mother for a family who was also having problems. She wanted to mention it to them but at the same time she didn’t want them to know that she had been listening to their conversation. She played with her hair for a moment and went over to the table where she set her coffee down and stirred it slowly.
“Well there are programs through the hospital, uh the internet,” Weaver replied she wasn’t exactly sure how she was going to find some one either but she knew that it was something that she wanted to do. Caterina cleared her throat and looked at them, they looked back at her, Weaver wasn’t so sure she liked the woman because she was related to Romano. She liked to try to give everyone a chance but someone that close to Romano made her just a little bit nervous.
“I could do it for you if you wanted.” She finally spoke up, she was going to say something to them eventually so she thought she would get it out into the open now. Weaver looked at her in disbelief, Caterina had showed up only an hour ago and now she was offering to be their surrogate mother. It seemed like it was meant to be but at the same time she knew Romano would totally go nuts if he knew that his daughter was going to carry their child.
“What makes you think that you are even qualified?” Carter spat at her he was angry that she was listening to their conversation in the first place. She looked down at her coffee for a moment and then took a sip, she thought that they would be grateful that they found someone to carry their child but instead they were treating her like crap.
“I did it for a couple in Tokyo.” She replied in a snappy tone of voice before taking her coffee and walking out of the room. Weaver looked at Carter, was it fate that she had come into their lives the day they decided to get a surrogate? Weaver didn’t know what to think, she barely knew the girl, but then again if they were to find a surrogate from the hospital program or on the internet they would barely know her either. At least this way they had Romano, he could tell them things about her, he would probably exaggerate a little bit but they guessed that Romano would have nothing but good things to say about her. Carter and Weaver talked about the possibility of Caterina having the child, they decided that maybe it was the best thing for them, after since they had found the mother they could move onto the next step quicker.

They found Caterina sitting in Romano’s office sipping her coffee, Romano wasn’t in there, she told them that he was in surgery and she was waiting for him to come out so they could go to dinner. They apologized for the way they treated her in the lounge and she forgave them, she understood why they would be mad about her butting into their business so it was okay. They talked for a long time and found out some things about her. She was a straight A student in high school, and she had no criminal record which she was willing to prove if she was put on the spot. She got a full scholarship to Princeton where she double majored in psychology and English. When she graduated from there after four years she decided to go teach in Tokyo for a while, she wanted to get out and see the world. When she was there the couple that had sponsored her was having trouble with getting pregnant. She saw the time and effort that it took them while they looked for a surrogate and since she had been close with them even before she moved there she offered to do it. She took classes on it and she went through therapy courses to help cope with things after the pregnancy and she was doing just fine. She was in good health, she didn’t drink and she never smoked in her life, she looked like the perfect candidate for them.
“Why are you two in here?” Romano asked as he entered the office, he was still in his scrubs from surgery, Caterina smiled at him. Weaver and Carter on the other hand looked at each other and slowly stood up, they were hoping that the present topic wasn’t going to be brought up just yet, neither of them wanted to see Romano’s reaction.
“I’m going to be their surrogate mother.” Caterina chirped happily, Romano looked absolutely shocked. He knew that she had done this before for the couple in Tokyo but never in his wildest dreams did he think she would be doing it for some one he actually knew. He didn’t hate Weaver or Carter per say but at the same time he didn’t know if he wanted his daughter, his only daughter, mixed up in their personal lives, “Isn’t that great daddy?”
“You know what?” He said after a long pause, he was trying to compose himself, he always hated losing his temper in front of his baby girl, “It’s your decision and even though I may not agree with it I will support you in any way I can.” With that he turned and left the room closing the door quietly behind him, Caterina smiled at Weaver thinking that things were fine. Suddenly from out in the hall there was a loud frustrated shout, Romano was yelling at some one. Carter sort of laughed at the idea that Romano wouldn’t lose his temper in front of his daughter but he had no problem going out of the office to make an ass out of himself.
“I don’t think he’s very happy about it,” Caterina said after a moment and then she laughed, “But it’s okay…I’m 27 years old and I can make my own choices.” She put her hand on Weaver’s shoulder to reassure her that the decision was final and Kerry nodded in response. After a quick background check and physical they could get started and the happy couple could hardly wait.

Six months later Caterina was five months pregnant with twins, and she was really showing. She was now living in the Carter estate with Kerry and John because the both of them wanted to be involved in the pregnancy as much as possible. When Weaver came home that day Caterina was laying on the couch with headphones pressed to her swollen belly. The twins were two girls and the couple was very excited to be having one child let alone two.
“What are the girls listening to tonight?” Weaver asked as she made her way towards the couch, Caterina turned and looked at Weaver. She looked beautiful laying there, Kerry realized that it was true that pregnant women had a glow about them.
“A little bit of Beethoven and a little bit of Bach.” Caterina replied, turning her head to look at Weaver, “I think they like it they are moving around.”
“Oh let me feel.” She said excitedly and then sat down on the couch, she placed then placed her ear to the woman’s extended stomach and held her breath. She certainly could feel the girls moving around in there and she smiled, “Hi there it’s mommy.” Caterina watched the expression on Weaver’s face, she felt so happy that the woman was this excited. She did this because she liked to watch the joy and excitement on the parents face. Weaver on the other hand knew that she was missing out on actually giving birth to a child but at the same time she was glad that the stress was taken off of her and put on someone else. Caterina was considerably younger then her and she didn’t have to go to work while she was pregnant so the stress on her body was a lot less. Caterina watched happily as Weaver talked and cooed at the girls through her stomach, she couldn’t wait till the day she gave birth…little did she know that day would be one of the worst in her life.

A month later she was ready to give birth but she hadn’t gone into labor yet, she didn’t mind carrying the babies but at a certain point she just wanted them out of her. Romano was very happy to see his daughter have a baby but at the same time he was a little angry that the kids wouldn’t be his grandkids. He knew that he had plenty of time to see her get married and have kids but it was still disappointing. Surprisingly he threw Weaver and Carter a shower using his own money to buy them some rather large stuffed animals that he thought were cute. He took time out of his own day to throw the shower, Caterina was there of course while Weaver opened the gifts and when he saw the look on his daughter’s face and how happy she was for them he couldn’t be angry for long.
After the shower Caterina was heading out to her car which was parked across the street, she was moving rather slowly because of the weight she was carrying. She thought that everything was safe because there were no cars coming but as soon as she got into the middle of the road a car came racing down the street. The horn honked and the breaks were slammed down but the car still bolted into her almost at full speed. She was tossed into the air and landed about 15 feet from where the car stopped, the man in the car got out and ran over to her. She was bleeding pretty badly and she had a head injury, not to mention the fact that the jolt had caused her to go into labor. Carter came out a few moments later with arms full of gifts that had been given at the shower when he saw the accident. Amazingly Caterina was awake the pain of labor and the instinct to stay awake through it was taking over.
“Oh GOD no!” Carter dropped all of the things he was carrying and ran over to the street and got down next to Caterina, “Cat! CAT!”
“I’m going into labor!” She cried out and closed her eyes as she tried not to push, her head was gushing blood and she was breathing hard. Carter told her to lay back and he checked all of her vitals, when his hands went over her side he felt that almost all of her ribs on the right side had been broken and he was afraid of it puncturing a lung. He told her not to move around so much, he told her to lay flat on her back but when someone was going into labor that was rather hard to do “Carter I can’t…breathe!”
“Just stay calm and lay back…”
“Oh my god…” Weaver had been right behind Carter but she had stopped at the front desk to pick up her messages. She saw Caterina laying there holding her stomach and her head, Carter yelled at her to go get some help which she did quickly. The man who hit her was yelling that it was an accident, that he was so sorry but no one was really paying attention to him.
“Save…the…babies…” She whispered to Carter, her eyelids started to flutter he could tell that she was about to lose consciousness, “If it comes down to…saving me…or the girls…save the girls.” After she was done talking her head went limp in his hands and she was out to the world.

Moments later she was rushed inside to a trauma room, where Carter and Weaver were ordered to wait outside. Weaver didn’t want to wait outside she wanted to be in there with her friend and her unborn children but Carter told her to remain calm. He told her that Caterina had told them to save the babies if they couldn’t save her. There was blood on Carter’s shirt and hands, he was still in a bit of shock from the incident so he hadn’t cleaned up yet. Romano headed over to them, he hadn’t yet heard that it was his daughter in the trauma room he just knew that he had been paged for a consult.
“Why are you two just standing around?” He barked at them and he paused at the door to the room for just a minute, “Carter go clean yourself up.”
“You don’t want to go in there…” Weaver said gently and she then put her hand on Romano’s arm, Romano looked at her skeptically wondering what was in there that was so bad he couldn’t handle it. He looked at her hand resting on his and he pulled it away gently, over the past few months he has started to care for the woman and her children so he had gotten more polite with her.
“Kerry,” He said in a calm but rushed tone of voice, “Don’t worry about me.” Then before Weaver could warn him he pushed the doors open. Everything started to move in slow motion for him when he saw his daughter laying there on the table. He ran over to her and got down and tried to talk to her even though the other doctors were telling him she was out. He yelled at them to hurry up, that she needed surgery or she could die. They told him that she was also in labor, not to mention the fact that she had a fractured skull, six broken ribs, a shattered pelvis, and a liver laceration. He stayed by Caterina’s side for a moment but he knew that just standing there wasn’t going to be enough so he went over to the phone. He called up to Corday and asked her to scrub in, she quickly agreed when she found out who was in the room. He then barked orders at them to get her up to surgery as soon as she was stable, they had to repair her liver and fast, time was certainly not on their side. He came out of the trauma room looking ghostly pale, he looked at Weaver and Carter for just a moment before darting off towards the elevators. Carter ran after him and caught up to him as he was impatiently waiting for the elevator to arrive.
“Romano…”
“God DAMN IT!” He pounded on the elevator door and then decided to take the stairs, he was planning on scrubbing in himself to be with his baby girl, “What do you want Carter?”
“What’s going on in there?” Carter followed him, he was moving fast and although Weaver was trailing behind them she couldn’t catch up. For the moment Romano ignored Carter and continued up the stairs, right now he was more concerned about if they would let him into the operating room or not.
“She’s a mess,” He suddenly snapped at Carter and then broke into a sprint once he reached the floor that he needed to be on, “I’m going to save her.” He was glad that he was still in his scrubs from before, it would really cut down on the time he needed to scrub in. He looked into the prep room and saw Corday getting ready and he smiled. He knew that at least if he couldn’t be in there right away that she would be next best thing to him.
“Before she passed out…” Carter grabbed Romano’s arm tightly preventing him from moving any further, “She specified that she wanted the babies saved if you couldn’t save her.”
“BULLSHIT!” Romano yelled at Carter, it wasn’t that he didn’t believe that Caterina said that but there was no way he was going to let the girls live and his baby die. Since he wasn’t there then he could say that he didn’t hear Caterina say that, he was absolutely pissed that Carter would bring up something so selfish at this point, “I’m going in there to save my daughter and if your kids, that SHE is carrying by the way, also survive then that’s a bonus but don’t be trying to pull this heroic last wish SHIT with me Carter.” He pulled his arm out of the other man’s grip and burst into the prep room, Carter sighed and turned to look at Kerry who was now right behind him. Both of them could understand the position that Romano was in, he didn’t want to lose his daughter and they knew that he didn’t want the babies to die either but all of his feelings were conflicted. He knew that if losing the babies meant saving his daughter he wouldn’t hesitate to do that but how would Carter and Weaver react?

Hours later Romano emerged from the operating room, they were able to save Caterina but only one of the twins had survived. The surviving twin had been moved up to the NICU, but he wanted to be the one to break the news to them. He had personally tried to save the other child, he tried as hard as he could, but in the end she was lost due to a head injury that was irreversible. Since there had been trauma to the other fetus they didn’t know if she would pull through but at the moment she was stable and that’s what mattered. The specialist who had been called in to work with the now dead baby told Romano that there was nothing more he could have done or they could have done but he still felt extremely guilty about it.
“Kerry, John…” He said as he entered the waiting room, suddenly he wondered why he had insisted on being the one to tell them, “Caterina stable, she lost a lot of blood and broke a lot of bones but she is now resting in the ICU.”
“Oh thank god.” Kerry whispered and quickly wiped a tear away from her face, she most certainly didn’t want the woman to die, but she didn’t want her babies to die either. She looked at the expression on his face and he quickly looked away from her, he actually felt tears stinging his eyes and he didn’t want Weaver of all people to see him cry. He wasn’t just crying for the baby he was crying because he was relieved that his daughter was going to be okay and the stress had been so high in there the emotions didn’t hit him till just now.
“Okay,” He took in a deep breath and turned to look her in the eye, it was the least he could do to break the news, “We tried very hard to save the girls, I personally worked as much as I could and as hard as I could but in the end we could only save one. I’m sorry.” He reached up and rubbed his eyes slightly and then swallowed hard. Weaver’s lower lip trembled and she put a hand over her mouth but Carter was right behind her and he put his arms around her and held her close. They both went silent for a moment as they grieved for the lost child, and although the grieving process would take quite a while, they had to be concerned about the surviving twin.
“How’s she doing?” Carter asked, his hand traveled down Weaver’s arm gently and then his fingers interlaced with hers, “Is she okay?”
“There was some trauma during birth so the effects are yet to be seen, however she is stable and in the NICU.” Romano reassured them, he looked down at his watch, he wanted to get into be with Caterina as soon as he possibly could but he had to take care of this business first. Corday then entered the room, her hair was still pulled up behind her head and she looked like she might have been crying but had pulled it together to talk to them.
“I can take you to the NICU.” Corday offered, she knew that Romano wanted to get to his daughter but she completely respected him for being the one to break the news to the expecting parents. Kerry looked at John and nodded her head slowly, it was a miracle that the child survived and even if there were birth defects due to the accident they would love her all the same.
“Go see your daughter Robert.” Kerry said softly he looked at her and smiled just slightly and pulled her into a hug. They had both been through a lot but Corday never thought she would see the day when Romano would willingly hug Kerry Weaver. She hugged him back tightly for a moment and then pulled away, it looked like for the moment things were going to be okay.

It would be ten years before Weaver and Carter would see Caterina again. Of course they stopped by to visit her when she was making her recovery, and of course Caterina took the time to see the baby that she had carried for so long. After the accident though she wanted to get out of there for a while, it made her realize that she could have died and she wanted to go see the world and get some things out of the way before it was too late. When she came into the hospital next time she was carrying a daughter of her own, her husband was behind her looking just as proud as he could be. Kerry and John had named their daughter Hope, and she was now ten years old. Because of the trauma at birth she had been born deaf, which was okay with Kerry because she knew sign language. Carter knew a little bit but he had to take a few classes, but by the time Hope was old enough to start signing he was ready. The day that Caterina had come to visit with Kerry and John she was invited over to their place to meet Hope and have dinner, but he husband didn’t come along. He knew the situation of her being the surrogate and he was okay with it but he wanted to spend time with his daughter and give Caterina a chance to catch up with her friends. They had a great time together and she found out that her father had been a changed man when it came to Weaver, he wasn’t exactly overly nice to them but he was better. Things were going fine in their part of the world and things were going great for Caterina, and not once did she ever regret being the surrogate mother of such a beautiful little girl.
The End

Isn't it possible that, even thirty or forty years after the death of a child or a brother or a sister, one may half-waken, thinking of that person with the same lost emptiness, that feeling of places which may never be filled....perhaps not even in death?
