Odd thought just occurred to me as I am reading up on neurotransmitters. Thinking of scribbling in the margin this note or that and was wondering if real doctors do that in their medical books and then it struck me .................... .......................... where are our heros/heroines medical books? We've seen the inside of their apartments and usually, from what I recall, their bookshelves are minor and their tunes collection tends to be more extensive. For those who have offices, okay, we can say they keep them all there. But most of the residents don't have offices and it really doesn't make sense for the professionals to hock their books after each semester. How would Abby cowrite an article with Dubenko, ie even consider it, if she didn't have any other references? So where are their books? Where are their journals? Is that just one of those little details that the producers have overlooked over the years? ----------------------------------------------------------- (What did Spock tell Kirk when he discovered that his copy of the regs was out of date? Buy the book, Admiral.--(wtte), old joke) |

It's a TV show that is known for its attention to detail. Here's a detail that seems missing. It's got the potential for a plot hole. It's like a profiler going into someone's house and not finding the things that should be there to indicate that they live there, like food in the frig, cleaning supplies, and so forth. If this was a profiling show about a doctor, we might lock in immediately about the lack of books, notes, and so forth. -------------------------------------------------------- ("I had never seen this woman before. I was reading in the library when I heard this woman scream."--Kirk to the Inquistor, (w,stte), ST:TOS "All of our yesterdays") |

Neela always has books and journals all over her apartment/Ray's apartment/her bedroom. Luka does have a fairly extensive bookcase in his livingroom behind the couch and yes, Dubenko's office is lined with book cases. I think it's safe to say that the set dressers work it in where it's feasible or has a plot point. As for Abby's write up, it wasn't that she was doing a huge paper but more of a case summary of "Look at the weird crap that came into our ER, ended up in the OR and hey...it's a fairly common occurrance after a bit of research." She went inot it thinking that she and Dubenko were going to discuss the how's and why's of writing the paper (he made it a date instead) and she did say she was going to pull stats on body stuffing in Chicago so I assume she had access to plenty of matterials for reference. ER likes to pull the "Do a Medline" search thing a lot, making it seem as if all of the characters rely on electronic means for information. Then again, they do also have people like Hope and Morris in the lounge with various text books from time to time as well. It's just not a major plot point for them to constantly be hitting the books, it'd be very boring television. |

Unfortunately those books are usually poorly written, and not so interesting.. At least the Charmed ones are. As for the no books thing, I've never really noticed, I s'pose I was more enjoying it then noticing the exact details

Well, it took me 13 seasons before I noticed it! ---------------------------------------------------- (Discussing how the panther got into the hooker's room. "Walked up the stairs?"--one of the responders "I think I would have noticed."--Bordello clerk, (w,stte), "Cat People") |
