Real Hospital in Chicago; About the County General Hospital

Hi there

I recently went to Chicago and at the tourist information desk I asked where was the County General Hospital.
Ok, I was not aware that is was a fictional hospital, but the gentle guide told me that it is certainly a ficitional version of the Northwest Memorial Hospital. I went to that Hospital, located in Chicago Downtown next to the Michigan Lake, and of course, it did not ressemble the Hospital in the TV show, but I still was happy to see it. :)

By the way, I felt a little bit guilty  about going to a hospital as a tourist, it is still a serious place where highly-dedicated people work as hard as they can to help people in need. :med:

Anyway, do someone have information about the real Hospital that served as a model for the County General Hospital? Was it realy the Northwest Memorial Hospital, as the guide told me? Where do they shoot the TV show (external scenes)? Are these real streets of Chicago?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure the entire thing is shot on a sound stage. Even the El and the park, because seriously the logistics of flying the actors out to Chicago every time they film the outside scenes....
The eps in Africa were shot on location, but I think they're the only ones...

I was under the impression (from what I've read), ER is filmed on location in Chicago a couple of times per year.

Yes, they film in Chicago a few times a year, once each season (spring/summer/autumn/winter). These scenes are usually filmed before the actual scripts for the episodes they will be used in are written, so a lot of the time they can seem a little detached from what is going on in the episode, or at least they used to.

They seem to do a fair bit of external filming - they've just done one big shoot recently, and I know the park scenes from earlier in S13 were actually shot in Chicago. Maybe sometimes they use LA (for, say, random street scenes that could be anywhere). Scenes outside the hospital itself, however, are done on sets.
I would put some shipper message here, but I'm just not *that* kind of fan...
