Mark Greene was possibly the best character ER ever had (no bias there). He was first in the credits all the way up to season 8.

There were many plots centered around him, but here are some of my favorites:
-fatherhood and his relationship with rachel
-his divorce- i hated jen from day 1!
-the motorcycle/goatee/contacts phase

His exit was definitely my favorite and the most powerful. i haven't met a single person who can honestly say that they didn't cry in "on the beach".

So anyways here's a thread to talk about him!

Yeah Mark was a GREAT guy and you're right aout "On the Beach", I did cry my eyes out :sniff: and it still hurts :(
I always kinda ge the feeling that Mark's the character that TPTB have let suffer the most. I mean fist, his wife leaves him, then he gets sued for malpractise (Love's Labor Lost), he get's attacked, his second love, Susan, leaves him and heads off for Arizona, he hardly sees his daughter anymore, his mother dies and later, his father dies of lung cancer, he has a brain tumor and later dies because of it and his daughter is cosuming drugs :( I mean, this guy was soooo great and he had to suffer sooooo much

Mark was ER. ER was Mark.

There's no way around the fact that hes the strongest, msot lvoed character there ever was on ER. Whilst other characters are favoured, such as Abby, those are just passin trend for teenage girls looking for a Hero. Mark is the legendary character however.

His character went through jsut as much, if not more, then any other character on the show and he did it all with sarcasm and devotion to the job. No-one can replace Mark.

Oh for Deity's sake I'm tearing up now!

You know, there are two kinds of doctors: the kind that get rid of their feelings, and the kind that hold on to them. If you're going to hold on to your feelings, you're going to get sick every once in a while. That's part of it. Helping people is more important than how we feel. Hell, I've been doing this eight years, and I still get sick.

I've been watching all my ER dvds (up to season 6) and even though I know he will die in 2 seasons time I always say to my mum "I don't want him to die". Mark was the best character, its such a shame he wanted to fulfill other opportunities, ER isn't the shame without him and the other original cast members.

Mark Greene was a legend. I loved him with Elizabeth and when I heard he was going to die I was gobsmacked. Everytime I see that episode on TV or anywhere else I cry. It's so moving, Alex Kingston did an amazing job. As did Anthony. *hats off to them*

I totally agree, Mark was ER!

I cried when i watched the Beach and The Letter! When Carter is reading that letter its just so real, having watched ER from the beginning (thanks to the fantastic invention of DVD and video) I felt a part of his life and when Carter read the letter, i was devastated!

how many other actors can say that they came first in the credits for 8 straight years?

i remember watching a video clip of an interview with maura and goran about the time that season 6 or 7 was shooting. they talked about how they knew that anthony was leaving in 30-something episodes, and they were sad to lose him as a cast member. so anyways... i just wanted to point out that he made a difference...

as mark greene and anthony edwards

Yeah, no one ever has or ever will hold a candle to Mark, not even Carter. I loved Mark to bits and was blown away when I heard he was leaving. I was sure I would cry, but I didn't. It takes a lot ot make me cry, a whole lot. I didn't cry but I was in mouring afterwards. They did such a great job with his goodbye; "The Letter" has been my favorite since it aired May 2, 2002. There were episodes after his death where I would be seeing the chaos and conflict, and just think "if Mark were here, he would be able to fix this". I've never felt that with another character. With most others I wasn't as invested in them (Jeanie, Lucy, Corday), or it was time for them to move on (Doug, Carol, Benton, Romano.....Carter). Yes it was time for Carter to go, for 2 reasons: 1) He gave us 11 years of beautiful brown eyes and comfort, it would have been selfish to ask him to continue on, episode after episode. 2) He was so wrapped up in getting Kem back and being with her in season 11 that his heart and head were long gone before he officially left.

Since Mark's death, character's come and gone, but we still feel the void in some way or another.
"THE LETTER"
Carter : It's good to miss him, it's missing him that keeps him here."
Susan: "You should write for Hallmark."

I taped On the Beach when it was on TNT the other day, and I bawled my eyes out when I watched it. :sniff: My mom even started crying, and she hasn't watched the old ERs in years...
"Do me a favor, write 'Not this one idiot' on my arm..."

For me the first episodes of ER I really watched were the re-runs on TNT, which just happened to be in the middle of season 8 at the time. So my first taste of ER was Mark Greene's death, and I'll admit that I didn't really feel it, it felt to me like any other tragic storyline. But after I watch earlier seasons and built my way up to "On the Beach" I fully appreciated the incredible journey Mark had taken, and what a loss he would be to ER. I feel this proves that it wasn't just that one sad episode of the season, but a tragic end to a great character.

Although with that said I feel that this was the only way that Mark could leave the ER. He had had so many oppurtunities in the past that it simply wouldn't be in his character to pick up and leave--as he addressed in his letter to the ER...

I remember in one of Mark's final episdoes there was a homeless man screaming for "Dr. Greene!" and I felt he kind of spoke for all of us... yeah there'd still be all of the other doctors and the show will go on but Dr. Greene's absense will always be felt.
