Clooney left six - count 'em! - seasons ago and Carol went five years ago. It's crazy to think any loss in ratings is down to them going. The writers need to pull their GD socks up and get down to some good solid character writing. They have actors much better than they deserve. I don't know how they do it with some of the material they're given.

I agree it has alot to do with the writers, but i also see why they would be bringing back old fave's to give a rating boost. even if it's only for 5 episodes, doug and carol (assuming they are brought back) fans will tune in to see why they are back and what happens to them....

I'm only in favor of this if it is down in the right context; between having the ol' timers return and do something completely ridiculous, and ruin what lasting, good memories there...I would much rather have them live their lives off the show. And if the writers want to close a chapter, then it should be left that way because trying to move in a new direction while still holding on to the past makes for an awkward storyline.

Plus, I don't think Doug and Carol even know half of the cast on the current show. Susan and Weaver - isn't that it? So they would stop by...say hi...there's really no purpose to such a cameo.

^^^ Good point you brought up there. Take Susan Lewis's return back in season 8. When she arrived back in the County General ER, it took her a long time to see a familiar face. There was no Doug, no Carol, no Jeanie, not even Jerry at the desk. All she knew was Weaver, Carter, Mark, and the nurses.

but then some of the guys like malucci would have no problem cause his character is so outgoing that it would make no difference and he would make it seem like he had never left!

Err...somehow I think when "Nazi dyke" is your "good-bye"...I'm not sure if that person is going to welcome you with open arms.

There was Mark of course, silly! But even so, when Susan came back, pretty soon after that Mark died, and so it was clear that the ship had sailed.

They need more attendings in there...the quality of teaching has declined; the current med students and residents are not as competent as the one from years past.

Well I hate to say it but the show has been on 11 season. It's still awesome, I still find myself doing everything I can to buy the DVDs or watch it on TV (Why else would I get up at 9 o clock in the morning?)

I think part of the problem is to many stars. They really can't go deep into one character without ignoring another.

Atleast thats the way I feel about it.

TPTB didn't get too into the med students for S11. This season was mostly about the 3 interns when it came to the topic of younger doctors. Of course there is no new med student that could ever match Lucy Knight, the only promising student Carter ever had (not to mention the only one that lasted 3 or more episodes)

I dont think the teaching has gone so bad as of yet. Susan, Carter and Luka together were a pretty good team. Once we get to next season, I might have a different opinion. They will be missing a keystone of the ER, whose shoes may prove to be unfillable

Yeah, I think a writer pointed it out that it's become a game of, "Look-there's-Mekhi Phifer-from-"Eight Mile"-and-ooh-there's-Shane West-from-"A Walk to Remember-and-that-chick-from"Bend it Like Beckham".

Oh wait, my bad, they already went through med school...supposedly. But at times they look like they've never seen a trauma before - and you at least get two years of field experience as a med student. <_< I meant there was a lot more supervision when Greene, Romano, Corday, and Benton were on the team (well two of them are surgical and there's a difference between that and ER, but there were just more attendings, period).

Haha - Luke looked so uncomfortable when Neela had that crush on him, he practically dumped her into Carter's care. Neela graduated from Yale - so I don't think that this crop of interns/residents can't make it...but just something is off.

If they really want to bring back old characters, they could start with ones who are still on the cast ie/ Weaver.

Ever since she moved upwards and Romano got squished, the actual shop floor of the ER has been missing a real "doer". They need someone down there who can annoy the hell outta everyone, and get stuff done. Weaver did that so well for 7 years, then she was just plucked out, and ever since the whole dynamic has changed.

I know Kerry isn't universally liked, but that's part of her appeal - she brings out so many feelings in different people.

Mark:- Dr Carter, you seen Dr Weaver?
Carter:- err usually she's everywhere
