Amy, along with Clara and Jack, had left for the spying mission. Amy had summoned up a light fog to effectively hide their movements from any watchful eyes. She made a beeline for the mall. "Well, as Clara said," she justified, "Teenagers often hang out in malls, so logically it should be the first place we go."

Once there, she saw a pink furry headband with a pair of pink sparkly cat ears on it, so Amy calmly froze the alarm system before smashing the window in order to grab it and put it on.

Clara was looking around, eying the locals for telling details that spoke of a life of neglect or abandonment. Such kids would be easy targets, after all.

When her friend smashed a display, Clara winced. "It would have been easier to steal the one inside the store."

"It doesn't match your look," Jack said idly as he walked past, grumbling a bit under his breath guess we're picking up pizza on the way home, great, a life of takeout food. He already knew walking around with these two was going to pull a few stares - well, at least, walking with Amy was going to - and he kept a bit of a distance.

Amy shrugged as she put on the head band. "The one in the store's on clearance so there's gotta be something wrong with it. Anyway, what's the issue? I'm, like, a villain. It's what I do."

The mall did indeed house groups of homeless teenagers. As long as they did not steal or bother customers, the teens were allowed to stay. In the past few months, several members of the community of homeless teenagers had vanished without trace, and their friends were very worried, but shy of going to the police.

Clara sighed and patted her friend on the arm. "We're doing reconnaissance, Amy; subtlety is part of that and-" she blinked as she spied a teen girl and a younger girl. Though neither looked bad, there were some small details that stood out to her: bags under the eyes; a pained thinness; faded and ill-fitting clothes; tense and wary body-language. The bottle-blonde stopped mid-sentence and grinned to make a great-white shark proud. "Bingo. Amy, food court, nine-o-clock. The teen with the braids and the girl with the oddly purplish-hair."

At the food court to their left, Adrienne quickly wound her box braids up into a knot and sighed. "It's too risky, Mari," she said to the little girl, scowling. Mariko, an eight-year-old, pouted and drew her brows together, clearly frustrated. She huffed and crossed her arms.

"But we don't have anywhere else to go, Adrienne!" she whined. "If what I can do can help-"

"No, that's final," the sixteen-year-old said in a low voice. "Not with the way things have been around here lately, I-" she choked up, "I can't lose you."

Amy looked round and grinned like the Cheshire Cat. "I hear you, girl," she replied. "I think that we ought to go and have a little chat, don't you think?"

Without waiting for Jack to say anything, Amy walked boldly up to the two girls who were inside the food court. "Hiya," she said with a disarming smile. "I believe you two will be able to help us. My name's Amy, this is my friend Clara and that grumpy guy over there is our chaperone."

Jack heard Amy and made a face but didn't turn around, just stared broodily at the food menu at one of the little food shacks. "... Does that have gluten?" he asked, squinting - not that he needed to, but he could at least play the part of "the grumpy guy" if he had to. "Sorry, can't read, left my glasses out in the car."

Adrienne looked up at the two teens in front of her, her brown eyes a touch wary but not outright suspicious. The child, Mari, spun and beamed up at them both. "I'm Kobayashi Mariko, but call me Mari! This is Adrienne!" she said, all but bouncing in place. "I love helping people!"

"Oooh, I bet you do," Clara said, eyes sparkling.

"Help with that, though?" Adrienne asked, eyes narrowing just slightly.

"Nice to meet you both," Amy said, smoothly, sizing both girls up at once.

She giggled and smoothed down her shorts, before fixing Adrienne with a speculative look. "We were wondering if you'd seen or heard of anything weird going on round here," Amy asked. "Anything, like, people disappearing or something like that."

Jack stepped away from the food counter to wait for his order to be ready, but out of the corner of his eye, he saw a figure slip out of sight... and not in a normal, Stepping into a shop movement, but a very specific sort of motion one would use when spying in the distance. He damned the fact he had to wear this eyepatch in public and glanced to the girls - they clearly had that under control - before stepping toward the figure he'd seen.

"Hello?" he called warily down the hall; it lead to the restrooms. Obviously, if someone was misbehaving and trying to hide, they wouldn't respond. He made a face and walked down the narrow hall, flipping his eyepatch up to scan around. Trace amounts of dirt on the floor lead to the emergency exit - which, apparently, had had its wires cut a long time ago, he noticed as the information fed into his brain.

He flipped his eyepatch back down, hearing footsteps behind him, and he stepped into the men's room quickly, going into a stall and shutting the door. Whoever it was followed him in and stood at a urinal... but he heard nothing. "...?" He squatted down, peering under the walls of the toilet stalls (and damning American bathrooms to hell and back for being so creepy)...

nobody???

He stared for a moment. Was he losing his mind?

He flipped his eyepatch up and froze, seeing a heat pattern of legs in front of him where he'd heard the feet stop.

Oh.

Oh, shit.

He got back up and kept his eyepatch up, trying to think. He hadn't brought a gun (mistake #1), he hadn't brought even a knife (mistake #2), this was probably a kid (problem #1), and it was a kid who could turn invisible (problem #2).

This was just a scouting mission, he reminded himself, he didn't have to take action here.

... but damn, this was going to be risky.

He put his eyepatch back down but cocked it a bit so he could peer out of a corner of it, flushing the toilet and stepping out with a forced, fake groan and leaning against the sink, feigning a grimace. "Knew that burrito was a bad idea," he muttered to himself, glancing behind him at the urinals. The feet of the person didn't turn around. He washed his hands, flicking water off of them as he looked around for the paper towels. Oh, right, modern mall, had a blow dryer.

... shit. The jet-like roar of the air dryer would mask the noise of an invisible attacker.

He swallowed hard and stepped over to the air dryer, flapping a hand under it to activate it.

It didn't.

"... is everything in this place fuckin' broken?" he swore. He was relieved though, just settled for waving his hands a bit and drying them off on the back of his own shirt as he looked over his shoulder. The figure had turned around and was clearly looking in his direction.

Triple shit.

He reached for the door-

And opened it easily, stepping out without drama and heading back up the hall.

Whoever that was, they were clearly just observing. Or a ghost. Or both.

-----

The young man in the men's room faded back into view, pulling out a small burner phone and flipping it open to fire off a text. Weird old guy in the mall, gonna keep an eye on him, boss. Guy tried to follow Persephone out. There's two girls talking to the two kids we were sizing up. The teen, called Hades by his comrades, disappeared from view again and lightly pulled the door open, peering up the hall. The man was just standing there, head tilted back as though in contemplation of the shops on the next floor, before turning toward the food court and heading off. Hades frowned. What a strange man.

Mari bounced. "Oh, I wouldn't call it disappearing..." she began.

Adrienne cleared her throat. "Some kids 'round here make some bad choices... and get taken. You know how it works, I'm sure... all those traffickers..." she gave Mari a pointed look.

Mari, in turn, frowned and blinked. If Adrienne didn't want Mari to go along with the offer, why couldn't they tell these nice girls about it? The eight-year-old was confused. Adrienne, meanwhile, could almost smell ulterior motives on the girls; something was off. They weren't do-gooders any more than she was.

"Unfortunately, I do," Clara sighed. "But were any of the creeps making offers particularly.. memorable?" she probed, fluttering her lashes innocently at Mari, whom she knew to be the more trusting of the two.

Mari began to nod, then stopped and looked at Adrienne. Adrienne was getting frustrated and leaned forward in her seat. "Okay, cut the crap. What are you after, what do you really want? Who do you work for?" Mari blinked and turned to the girls, eyes wide and unsure.

In his office, a man that seemed to be wrapped in shadows checked his phone. Though the little device glowed, it did not manage to light the scene enough to bring out any features, other than a pair of glowing green eyes that needed no help from the light of the phone. No sound was made as a reply was typed up and sent, and the light of the phone shut off, leaving the room to darkness once more. Even the glowing green eyes ceased to be seen as the figure closed his eyes.

If you can, photos of the new parties involved would be ideal. If not, immediately when clear of said parties, provide as thorough a description as you are able. Do not endanger or expose yourself while on recon. Remind your companion of the same.

Amy said, smoothly, "We'd be happy to bring you up to speed, but not here. You should come back with us to our base so that we can tell you everything you'd like to know. There's no need to be afraid; we're not gonna hurt you. That's not at all what this is about. But here isn't really a good place to discuss things; far too public."

Amy figured that if the two girls wouldn't come back with them freely, she and Clara could always bring them back by force. She knew that Adrienne wasn't telling them everything she knew, and she was preventing Mari from telling all, too. Amy knelt down by Mari and gave her the cat headband. "This isn't really my style, you can have it," she said with a smile. "Wouldn't you prefer to sleep in a bed tonight rather than out on the streets?"

~~~
Outside the side entrance to the mall, there were two teenagers. One leaned against the wall, smoking a cigarette. The other lounged on a nearby bench, checking her phone and scowling.
"I don't care what you say, Rian, but they've been in there way too long," the girl said in a posh English accent. She had long purple and blue striped hair that hung loose around her shoulders. Her eyes were a demonic red, but that wasn't the only thing about her that would make people think twice. Her skin was coloured a dark slate blue; while hair and eyes could have been dyed or contacts, there was nothing normal about her skin colour. Jinx was a very powerful mutant with the power to cast dark magic, and a sociopath besides. When her powers had manifested at the age of thirteen, Jinx, or Emily as she was known as back then, had had her appearance change at the same time. Her friends and family had shunned her, so Jinx had unleashed her dark magic on them. She had left the UK and gone to America soon afterwards. Able to alter her appearance to appear more normal, Jinx none the less didn't bother when she was out on a mission as the only people to see her were the others in the team.
The boy, Rian, turned to look at Jinx. "You're always so impatient, Jinxy," he replied in a lazy voice, lighting another cigarette from the butt of the old one, and throwing the old butt down on the floor. "Iblis told us to wait here til the others finished their recon of the mall."
Rian had short black hair, emerald green eyes and a chilled out demenor. He had run away from his foster mother years ago due to her alcoholism and physical abuse. He had the powers of fire and water, and could utilise them in a variety of different ways. He was often paired with Jinx on missions as their powers worked well together, but that didn't mean that they were in a relationship. Rian was messed up in the head due to having been groomed and abused by an adult woman when he was ten years old. He had never been able to hold down a relationship as a result, tho he doubted that even if he could that he would pick a girl like Jinx who not only had no morals but seemed unable to give a damn about anyone other than herself.
Jinx rolled her eyes. "I'm sure that Iblis would let us go in if Hades and Persephone were taking too long."
Rian considered this, then nodded. "Yeah," he replied. "Something might have happened to them. I'll message Iblis."
Rian threw the butt of his cigarette on to the ground and pulled out his own phone. He tapped out a message and waited for a reply.
The man in question was sprawled on a couch in a den not far from where the shadow man waited in his office. This man had bright blond hair and red eyes which held a hint of madness within. His hair was reminiscent of the flames that made up Iblis' entire soul. His phone beeped, and he checked it with a snicker, sending a reply back to send the two into the mall. Iblis didn't bother to ask his brother first; this way was far more fun. He liked Jinx and Rian as a team, and to keep them waiting outside seemed pointless, despite his brother's insistance that the two should not go inside and cause havoc, and that it would be better for the far more innocuous team of Hades and Persephone to handle the recon alone.
Jack stayed near the hallway for the bathroom, keeping one eye on the girls but keeping a steady ear on the hallway behind him. However Amy and Clara dealt with this, as long as it ended without much trouble, he didn't care.
He froze though, hearing a very faint camera click, and he spun around, looking around. "..." He spotted a kid, maybe ten years old, holding a phone near him and relaxed marginally. "Sup, kid."
"Uh- You look like a pirate, I'm sorry, Mom wouldn't believe me otherwise," the kid said sheepishly.
Kira just chuckled and shook his head. "Just ask someone for their picture first next time. Most people won't mind if you ask."
The kid nodded and bounded off, leaving Kira to his own devices.
Hades slipped toward the exit, sending The Shadow Man In The Office the photo he'd taken on his phone of Jack with the girls vaguely in the background. He supplemented the picture with a description of Clara and Amy, adding that Persephone had dipped out when she'd almost been caught.
-----
One of the dead planters near Rian and Jinx began to brighten up as footsteps approached, flowers blooming from the greenery as Persephone rounded the corner. "There you two are." The girl made a face at them and crossed her arms. "Thought you were on the other side. Sorry it took me so long to get to you." Persephone was a very skinny seventeen-year-old with dark olive skin and hair that was apparently dyed a brilliant red - until you got too close and realized she didn't dye her hair. "Hades is on his way to us, he's finishing recon. I was so close this time to talking to those two girls and convincing them to leave with me this time!" she growled. The plants shook violently for a moment before settling down and she rubbed her face, turning her head when she heard her boyfriend approach.
Hades faded into view quickly behind her. He was her total opposite - stocky, a head shorter than her with dark brown hair streaked with white and paler than death. "We need to go."
Adrienne was on guard immediately. "Uh-uh, no dice."
"Oh, c'moooon, Adrienne!" Mari whined. "I wanna talk to them, they seem nice!"
Adrienne blinked at the little girl. "Fine. You want us to talk to you? Take us to a restaurant or something; more private, but not some base, or whatever," Adrienne said, lifting her chin in stubborn defiance.
Clara blinked at that. "Uhhhh...." She didn't even know what funds that had.
~
Mephiles checked his phone, then flinched at the brightness. Hadn't he just changed the brightness? For a moment before he darkened it again, his face was lit up. A thin and pale but not unattractive face with sharp features, and perfectly groomed short dark hair. The light of the phone almost made his hair look dark blue, but it was hard to see in the mere moments before the phone was dimmed. He eyes the photo and read the accompanying descriptions, then smirked to himself.
Well done, indeed. This gives me a face to work with, at least. Return for a debriefing.
Jinx pouted, flinging her hair back. "You guys get to have all the fun," she said. "I'm definitely insisting that me and Rian get to go inside next time."
Since the four of them would be walking thru the streets together til Jinx could find an unobserved place to teleport them back to base, she performed a spell to turn her skin colour to a light tan, so that apart from her hair and eyes, which people would assume were dye and contacts, she would appear normal. Rian watched her with interest. He had seen this done before, but never got tired of seeing it.
"Why not go about in disguise all the time, if you can do that?" he asked Jinx, who shrugged and replied, "Cuz we shouldn't have to."
~~~

Amy smirked. When their belongings had been given back to them, Amy had had a purse full of stolen cash and credit cards. While the cards were useless by this time, the cash was alright and there were plenty of back street restaurants that wouldn't bother to check the serial numbers on the notes.

"I know a great place near here," she said idly. "It's a steakhouse and they do really great food. I'm pretty hungry myself; we could head there for a time. My treat."

Persephone rolled her eyes and wrapped her arm around her shorter boyfriend's shoulders. "I wish I could turn my plant thing off. That'd be great." She glanced at the planters that she'd walked past - they'd stay bright and beautiful for another hour before mysteriously dying again unless she stayed close by. Her small room at their headquarters was full of plants that never died as a result.

Hades shrugged, "On the bright side, you'd never have to pay for makeup to go to a comic convention, Jinx."

-----

Kira overheard Amy's words and inwardly groaned - did they even have money for this!? Oh well, couldn't hurt to dine and dash once. He had an idea of which steakhouse it was and started heading for an exit door in that direction.

Adrienne's flat black eyes still regarded them with mistrust, but she lost the tenseness to her. "Alright."

Mari squealed and clapped. "Food, real, good food!"

Clara laughed. "That's right, sweetie! We'll get you all fed, and let you have dessert!" Clara also tended to keep cash, but liked to save it rather than splurge. But this counted as important, didn't it?

Jinx scowled. "Hardly very comforting," she said, thinking with genuine pain of her old life before her mutation had kicked in. She had been the most popular girl in school, the one that people feared and looked up to equally. No-one wanted to get on her bad side, and everyone battled to win her approval. Not any more. She pushed the memories away and abruptly turned to walk down the high street.

~~~
Amy led the way to the steakhouse, which was on back streets. She asked for a booth, which hid them discretely from any prying eyes and passed menus around. "Make this a good dinner," she purred. "We deserve it."
Clara opened the menu with a little flourish.
"I want mozzerella sticks, for sure!" Mari declared with a firm nod. "And, uhhhh..... chicken fingers!"
Adrienne chuckled quietly and smiled at the little girl with warmth in her brown eyes. Clara noted this, and was glad the kid was so open and trusting; clearly, Mariko was the key to Adrienne. And they needed them both.
The little girl turned to Amy. "What're you getting?"
Adrienne browsed the menu, unsure what she ought to get. Finally, she settled on the barbeque ribs, and the tiniest smile appeared on her fect. [iMake the most of it, huh? I think I will,[/i] she thought to herself.
Kira just handed their waitress his menu without opening it - he'd been a creature of habit before his capture and that hadn't ever changed. "I'll have a steak with the salad on the side, rare please, and a Sierra Nevada pale. The green bottle one if you have it." He glanced around the edge of the booth - while he didn't mind the secluded booth, it bothered him deeply that he wouldn't be able to watch the room while he was at it.
It didn't take long for the food and drinks to arrive and Amy was making sure that the glasses were well topped up.
"So," she said, turning to the younger girl Mariko, "No-one can hear us here. Maybe you'd like to tell us what you can do? I'm all ears."
~~~

Back at base, Louise was fretting a little, glancing at her watch. "Wonder what's taking them so long?"

Diego looked up, not really interested, but thinking slyly that Louise's worry would be a good excuse for him to go outside. He had no fear of the threat of the bomb, knowing that with his powers he could null the bomb inside him any time he wished. He just figured that he'd go along with the charade for as long as it amused him.

Mari bounced in her seat and held up her hands. She grinned, and suddenly what appeared to be a live current ran between her fingers. "I can sparkle!"

Adrienne looked minorly alarmed. "Mari!" she hissed.

Mari looked ashamed, and the current stopped. "Sorry... but this isn't in public, right?"

Adrienne groaned. "Girl, people can still see..."

Clara's eyes shone with the light of fascination. A mutant, perhaps? That would make plenty of sense, really... how fascinating. But the blonde girl giggled. "i thought it was super pretty," she said to Mari. The purple-haired girl just beamed back in delight at the compliment.

Kira kept his mouth shut for the most part, letting the girls deal with it. However, at Mari's small display, he nearly choked on his drink and covered his mouth with the side of his hand, staring at her. "Uh, small warning, maybe don't poke me when you're doing that." Electric power like that could really fry him if he wasn't careful. Shit!

-----

Rosie poked her fingers together, biting her lip as she glanced between Louise and Diego. It wasn't hard to tell why Louise was fidgeting - and, quite frankly, something about Diego made her uncomfortable. Eventually she got up, grabbing her bag and pulling it over her shoulder. She took out her notepad and scribbled down, I'll go look for them? and held it up in front of Louise.
