This is carried on from my previous topic. The cases are in no particular order. Top Ten Infamous Murders 10. Dr Harold Shipman. Dr Harold Shipman was jailed for life in January 2000 for murdering 15 patients while working in Hyde, Greater Manchester. An official report later concluded he killed between 215 and 260 people over a 23-year period in Hyde and Todmorden, West Yorkshire. The 57-year-old GP was given 15 life sentences to run concurrently for the murders, and four years for forging a will. He always denied his crimes and was found hanged in his cell in January 2004. 9. Susan Smith. Susan Vaughan Smith of Union, S.C. was convicted on July 22, 1995, and sentenced to life in prison for murdering her two sons, Michael Daniel Smith, 3, and 14-month-old Alexander Tyler Smith. At around 8 p.m. Susan put her barefooted sons in the car, strapped them in their car seats and began driving around. She drove to John D. Long Lake and drove onto a ramp, got out of the car, put the car in drive, released the brake and watched as her car, with her children sleeping in the back seat, plunged into the lake. The car drifted out then slowly sank. At first, Susan claimed her children were abducted by a black man, but eventually her story unravelled and she confessed to their murders. 8. Fred And Rosemary West. Probably the most notorious British serial killers of recent history are Fred and Rosemary West, who abducted, tortured, raped and murdered an unknown number of women over a 20-year period. They buried many of their victims under their home at 25 Cromwell Street, Gloucester. Fred West eventually committed suicide before being brought to face charges of murdering 12 people, including his first wife and eldest daughter. Rose West was convicted of 10 murders at Winchester Crown Court in November 1995 and is serving life in Holloway prison in north London. 7. David Berkowitz David Berkowitz, better known as Son of Sam, is an infamous 1970s New York City serial killer who killed six people and wounded several others. His crimes became legendary because of the bizarre content in the letters that he wrote to the police and the media and his reasons for commiting the attacks. Berkowitz was eventually caught after receiving a parking ticket at the time and near the place of the Moskowitz murder. That evidence along with letters he wrote to Carr and the Cassaras, his military background, his appearance, and an arson incident, led police to his door. When he was arrested he immediately surrendered to police and identified himself as Sam. After being evaluated, it was determined that he could stand trial. He pled not guilty and received a 365-year sentence. 6. Ted Bundy Theodore Bundy was a serial killer who terrorized the nation from 1974 until his final capture in 1979. He was attractive, educated, and charming but also a brutal killer who raped and killed an untold number of women across the country. Bundy confessed to 30 murders but authorities believe the true number of victims totaled over 100. After 10 years on death row, Bundy was executed by electrocution on January 24, 1989. His victims were all female and mostly with dark hair. Some of the bodies were never found as the victims simply vanished without trace. Bundy also used to target sorority houses for victims, and even managed to escape from prison at one point. His conviction turned a popular theory on its head; the theory that all serial killers are unpopular loners. All American boy Bundy was far from that, but was still a sadistic sex killer. When he was being executed, crowds of people stood outside the prison waving signs that said, "Fry, Bundy, Fry." 5. Beverly Allit Another notorious serial killer was nurse Beverly Allitt, who suffered from a psychological illness, Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome. This means that sufferers will cause damage to others in order to gain sympathy and attention. Beverly also suffered from plain Munchausen; she'd faked illness and caused injury to herself on several occasions. In the spring of 1991, Allitt worked at the Grantham and Kesteven Hospital. Over a 58-day period that year, a series of mysterious deaths, illnesses and injuries struck the hospital. The common factor was that Nurse Allit always seemed to be there at the time that disaster struck. Two years later, the paediatric nurse was convicted at Nottingham Crown Court in 1993 on 13 charges of murder and causing grievous bodily harm. Nicknamed the Angel of Death, Allit killed four children and injured five others. Her main method of murder was to inject the child with potassium chloride (to cause cardiac arrest), or with insulin (to induce lethal hypoglycemia). 4. Mary Bell. Mary Flora Bell (born May 26, 1957 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England) was convicted in December 1968 of the manslaughter of two boys, Martin Brown (aged four years) and Brian Howe (aged three years). Bell was ten years old at the time of one of the killings, and eleven at the time of the other. On May 25, 1968, the day before her 11th birthday, Mary Flora Bell strangled Martin Brown. She was believed to have committed this crime alone. Between that time and the second killing, she and her friend Norma Joyce Bell (no relation), age thirteen, broke into and vandalised a nursery in Scotswood, leaving notes that claimed responsibility for the Brown killing. The Newcastle police dismissed this incident as a prank. On 31 July 1968, the two took part in the death, again by strangulation, of three-year-old Brian Howe. Police reports concluded that Mary Bell had gone back after killing him to carve an "N" into his stomach with a razor; this was then changed using the same razor but with a different hand from an "M". Mary Bell also used a pair of scissors to cut off bits of Brian Howe's hair and to mutilate him. Both Mary and Norma were charged with the murders, but Norma was aquitted. 3. Jon Venables and Robert Thompson. James Patrick Bulger (born 16 March 1990), a two-year-old child from Kirkby, Merseyside, England, was abducted, tortured and murdered in 1993. The perpetrators were two 10-year-old boys, Robert Thompson (born 23 August 1982) and Jon Venables, (born 13 August 1982). Bulger disappeared on 12 February 1993 from the New Strand Shopping Centre, Bootle, while accompanying his mother, and his mutilated body was found on a railway line in nearby Walton on 14 February. Thompson and Venables were charged on 20 February 1993 with the abduction and murder. Thompson and Venables were found guilty of the murder of Bulger on 24 November 1993, making them the youngest convicted murderers in modern English history. They were sentenced to custody until they reached adulthood, initially until the age of 18, and were released on lifelong licence in June 2001. The case has prompted widespread debate on the issue of how to handle young offenders when they are sentenced or released from custody. On 2 March 2010, the Ministry of Justice revealed that Jon Venables had been returned to prison for an unspecified violation of the terms of his licence of release. Justice Secretary Jack Straw stated that Venables was returned to prison because of "extremely serious allegations", and stated that he was "unable to give further details of the reasons for Jon Venables' return to custody, because it was not in the public interest to do so." 2. Jeffrey Dahmer Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer (May 21, 1960 – November 28, 1994) was an American serial killer and sex offender. Dahmer murdered 17 men and boys – many of whom were of African or Asian descent – between 1978 and 1991, with the majority of the murders occurring between 1987 and 1991. Dahmer was that rare serial killer; the one that murders outside his race. Most serial killers stick to their own race as far as victims are concerned. His murders were particularly gruesome, involving rape, torture, dismemberment, necrophilia and cannibalism. Jeffrey's apartment was searched after his arrest and there was no food there at all, save a jar of mustard; by this time, all Dahmer was eating was human flesh taken from the bodies of his victims. On November 28, 1994, he was beaten to death by a fellow Columbia Correctional Institution inmate; a black man. 1. Nikolai Dzhumagaliev Nikolai Dzhurmongaliev made it his mission to rid the world of prostitutes and managed to eliminate seven women before he was caught. Also known as "Metal Fang" for his white metal teeth, he would lure women into the dark end of a local park, where he would rape them and hack them to death with an axe. He also practiced cannibalism; he cooked certain parts of his victims, eating some and even serving the rest to friends of his at get-togethers. The Russian made a habit of preparing ethnic dishes out of his victims and serving them to his friends. His crimes were discovered when two drunks, who he invited over to his house, discovered a woman's severed head in the kitchen. He was found not responsible for his murders (which are believed to be at least seven) due to insanity, and he was committed to a Tashkent mental institution. He escaped in 1989 while being transported to another facility. He was re-captured in 1991 in Fergana. Dzhumagaliev is now jailed in the asylum. |
