I really thought I would post this here as I do want to have a more "advanced discussion" on this topic. dental experience. I watched this video posted on youtube and I am a wee bit disapointed at the lack of knowledge of dentistry from this individual. Reason being is because he is making loads of arguements with no educated statements. I understand loads of people feel this way going to the dentist, but since I am going to school for dentistry I must understand what is going on in a patiant's perspective at all times. The root reason why I am posting this is to educate people in dentistry. When I graduate I want to be a dentist whom has the most respect and knowledge and understand of a patient's needs. I don't want them to feel that they are going to a horrible place of no return..Also, if you see any words with this (*) next to ; its means it has a definition at the bottom. I chose to write several arguments against his statements in the snippet. They are: -He makes a statement regarding the dentist wearing a mask. My Answer to this-dental professionals wear masks because of many reasons such as: avoiding tooth structure flying in your face when you are working on a cavity preperation, saliva/ aerosals coming up from when you are using the rotary instruments and more inmportantly to protect themselves from possible diseases such as TB which happens to be an airbourne disease that could result in death. Plus I am pretty sure a patient would not want a dentist breathing on them while they are working in your opened mouth. -He makes a statement about the chair and the t.v. on the ceiling. My Answer to this- The flat chair is used for all dental procedures as its a safety percaution for both the operator and the patient. It is easiar for the dentist to see what he/she is doing when you are lying down. The t.v. is used during long procedures. Basically duing cavaty preperations and or root canals. -He makes a statement about the questioning. My Answer to this- We must ask these questions as it gives us an understanding as to how you maintain your own oral self care at home on your own. We have to know your brushing and flossing habbits so we understand why there may be so much palque(biofilm*) or tartar(calculus*). Also, questioning is done to keep records. Any medical documents are also legal documents. If anything was to happen during a procedure we must take note of what was said and done. Say for example your dentist asked you if you are experienceing any sensitivty and he turns around and drills the area od sensitivtyand you beleived he/she did the procedure without giving you anesthetic. That would be called (malpractice*). Where you would have a chance to sue him/her for malpractice. Say the dentist did administer a particular amount and wrote it down and has proof. How he/she has sometihng to back themselves up in court. So asking questions basically cover their butt's. -He makes a statement about "carving and Car buffing like instruement" . My Answer to this- The particlar instument he was reffering to would be called an exploer it removes biofilm and calculus. Also the "car buffer" is a rotary instruments that does rotations on tooth surface to disturb biofilm and calculus. There are thousands of different instruments for different things. Everyone whom has been to the dentist has all had an exploer in their mouth as its a majour instrument in all procedures. -He makes a statement about super soaker . My Answer to this- The super soaker is called a triplex syringe. It contains water and air the removes debris from your teeth that was created when removing biofilm and calculus. -He makes a statement about the foam and the vaccum . My Answer to this- the foam is called flouride and its used to help prevent future cavaties(carries*)The vaccum is caleld the saliva ejector and does exactly what it sounds like it does. It vaccumes all the debris, saliva and dental agents used during a polishing. -He makes a statement about teethy talk . My Answer to this- Dental professionals all over the world have codes and names and numbers for structures in the mouth. We do this to understand what tooth we are working by the number of where its located in the mouth and also by which quadrant. Every area has its own numbering system but basically is the same. For example in the states tooth number one in an adult's mouth would be the wisdom tooth on the top right. What if you don't have a wisdom tooth? Well, basically the tooth before it would be number 1. Sadly I only know how Germany, Canada and the U.S. does their numbering. Luckily Canada and Germany are the same they woul called the first tooth (ONE ONE). Reason being is that its in the first quadrants being the top right hand side and is the first tooth. Being one of your front teeth. ( the one on the right side) -He makes a statement about cavaties and how they hurt . My Answer to this- Cavaties don't hurt. How a cavaty begins to hurt is because its gone way too far. when a cavaty reaches to the inner most portion of the tooth beiging the pulp' that is when it hurts. If it has gone that far then now your looking at a root canal. Proper brushing and flossing techniques are your best bet to avoid cavaties. I want to make a statement that dentist's and dental professionals around the world are not here to make you feel bad and or cause you pain. Improper care of your teeth is generally the cause of the pain which is not our fault. We can only tell you the best ways to take care of your teeth when your at home, but if you choose not to then things like restoations, root canals and cementing happens. A good dental office does only preventive procedures instead of restoarative all day. A dental office with loads of patents only coming in for a polishing would be a dentist's dream. That would mean that you take care of your teeth and care about your oral hygiene and that in itself is rewarding to dental professionals. On a side note I want to post dental terms here that people may of heard, but don't understand. 1) Biofilm- biofilm is basically a fancy word for plaque. Biofilm/plaque is a gel like substance that is non-mineralized and is a matrix of colonized micro-organisms that is leftundisturbed or is not removed. 2) Calculus- is a fancy word for tartar. Calculus/tartar is hardened/ calcifed plaque. 3)Malpractice - is when a medical proffessional does any improper, negligent practice; misconduct or misuse on a patient during a procedure. 4)carries- fancy word for cavity Please feel free to make any arguments against what I have stated. I want to adress questions and or concerns abotu anything in dentistry. I always get into debates with my buddies at school taking other medical professions up as a career. However out of all my friend's and their professional choices none of them have gotten more hatred from the public then dentists. I want to assist in lifting that hatred away and create an understanding of the profession. |

I have mild dentist phobia as well as needle phobia. I make a round trip that takes about half an hour to a particular dentist every time I need to go. The reason being, that the dentist that I go to there is sympathetic to my phobias and always is very understanding, telling me what's going on and what he's going to do. I would never change my dentist, cuz I wouldn't trust a new one to be as good. |

I really don't mind going to the dentist, however, I do not like needles. I hate shots and I freak out everytime I have to get a shot at the doctors. Heck, I have to know ahead of time when I am getting a shot to prepare myself. If my dentist would every think about putting a needle near my mouth, I would freak. One time, I had to get a cavity removed or something painful like that and my dentist asked me if I wanted to have a shot put into my gums. I said no before he even finished the sentence. Instead, I squeezed the chair handles everytime it hurt. xD |

When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free.” by Catherine Ponder | |
