They were standing at one end of a very long and splendid hall with a highly polished, dark wood floor. The peacock blue ceiling was inlaid with gleaming golden symbols that kept moving and changing like some enormous heavenly noticeboard. The walls on each side were panelled in shiny dark wood and had many gilded fireplacesset into them. Every few seconds a witch or wizard would emerge from one of the left-handed fireplaces with a soft woosh. On the right-hand side, short queues were forming before each fireplace, waiting to depart.

Halfway down the hall was a fountain. A group of golden statues, larger than life-size, stood in the middle of a circular pool. Tallest of them all was a noble looking wizard with his wand pointing straight up in the air. Grouped around him were a beautiful witch, a centaur, a goblin and a house-elf. The last three were all looking adoringly up at the witch and wizard. Glittering jets of water were flying from the ends of their wands, the point of the centaur's arrow, the top of the goblin's hat and each of the house-elf's ears, so that the tinkling hiss of falling water was added to the pops and cracks of the apparators and the clatter of footsteps as hundreds of witches and wizards, most of whom were wearing glum, early-morning looks, strode towards a set of golden gates at the far end of the hall.

A sign next to the fountain read:

All proceeds from the fountain of magical brethren will be given to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.

Seated next to the golden gates, beneath a sign saying Security, was a wizard wearing peacock blue robes. On the desk in front of him was a strange brass instrument that looked something like a set of scales with only one dish. There was a small slit on its base. A long golden rod, thin and flexible like a car aerial, sat beside the scale.

Through the golden gates there was a smaller hall, where at least twenty lifts stood behind wrought golden grilles.

After disapparating out of the shadows of Diagon Alley, the young Minister of Magic appeared in the Atrium of his Ministry, on top of the edge of the fountain of the golden statue. Although it was nearly early morning now, the Atrium was quite empty, except for a few stragglers and the security guard. Within another hour or so, the magnificent polished wood floor wouldn’t be seen through the hundreds of workers of the Ministry hurrying off to their designated locations.

The Minister jumped down from the edge, which was quite high compared to average height of man, and took a step away from the fountain. The few that were in the Atrium at the time of Lucian’s appearance had already gone back to what they were doing.

As a couple more minutes went by, Lucian began to wonder where Layla had gone. He knew that Layla wasn’t the type of person to get lost, so he figured that the witch had something to attend to in Diagon Alley. Lucian didn’t mind, as long as Layla didn’t keep him waiting there too long.

Consumed with boredom, the wizard slowly took a stroll around the Fountain of Magical Brethren, observing the points of exit of the water from each of the five creatures. The sound of water streaming out of the wands of the wizard and witch, the ears of the house elf, the tip of the centaur’s arrow, and the top of the goblin’s hat, and hitting the pool of water below soothed Lucian.

For a few moments, Lucian strode around the fountain with his eyes closed, his hand passing over the smooth black rocks. The sound of the tinkling water reverberated inside of Lucian’s head, continuing to sooth him, until he was in a near-meditative state. The time between every footstep the Minister took around the fountain seemed like an hour until he returned to where he began, whereupon he opened his eyes and continued to wait for Layla, though less bored and more tranquil than before.

A small pop signaling the appearance of Layla Nyx sounded less than a meter behind the Minister. Its shallow echo bounced off the cavernous walls, disturbing the early morning peace of the Atrium.

The young witch had a tendency to disrupt calm in most places she went, much to her dismay. Though she had always been in the spotlight, she had never truly grown accustom to the feeling of having all eyes in a room locked on her every move. At least when she was around Lucian, the staring was somewhat drawn to his presence.

"Sorry to keep you waiting. I really didn't wish to have to return to Diagon Alley to pick up..." Layla paused at the last word, her eyes scanning the Minister's face. She would tell him all about it some other time. After he had proven himself to her, that is. Quickly, she changed the subject. "Now then, we should probably get this all over with as soon as possible. Are you ready?"

As she spoke, a particularly genuine smile ran over her face at the agreement to be made. It had been quite some time since she had set foot inside the Ministry of Magic. At one time, she had been one of the most successful Aurors that the Ministry had in its arsenal. Soon, she would again hold a tremendously powerful position in magical government. More power and authority than ever before would now be hers. Simply the thought made her giddy.

As soon as the Minister heard a small pop behind him, signaling the arrival of Layla Nyx, he started to move forward after she said a few words, heading towards the elevators. “Yes, follow me. We’ll go to my office, as to prevent any eavesdroppers.” There was no doubt that Layla would follow him, so he continued on, slipping his hands into his pockets. The Atrium was slowly filling up as the two walked through.

Lucian noticed how Layla trailed off after she nearly mentioned what she had to pick up, which intrigued the wizard for a second. His interest was lost, however, when the Minister reminded himself it was not his business, at the moment anyway.

Soon they were near the Security desk, who had been staring at Layla as soon as he first saw her in the Atrium. As the two approached the guard stepped forward, still looking at Layla. “Ma’am, wa-“

“No, she’s with me. We have no time to weigh wands,” the Minister quickly replied, walking on past. The guard only nodded and went back to his position.

After a few moments in the elevator, the witch’s voice stated the floor level for the Ministry of Magic and Support Staff, to which Lucian stepped out, hopefully followed by Layla. A few more moments of walking in carpeted hallways with an eerie silence looming, and the Minister was standing outside of the door to his office, opening the door, allowing Layla to walk in, walking in himself, and shutting and locking the door behind him.

Lucian’s desk, in the center of the large room, was soon occupied as he sat down and took out a piece of parchment. “Now we can get down to business without any interruptions,” said Lucian. “First you state what you want, and I’ll state what I want in return. If we can both accept we have ourselves a deal.” Lucian took out a quill and dipped it in ink, starting to write on the parchment, only stopping until Layla began to speak.

During the latest piece of downpours, Jason apparated into the alley across the street from the Ministry's visitor's entrance. Opening the umbrella he had stolen from a newstand back in Nottingham Jason hurried over to the telephone booth, only to find a muggle girl standing inside and talking into the phone.

She only looked to be around fifteen and was chattering away with several puncutated giggles and laughs as she leaned against the door, apparently not moving anytime soon. And neither was the rain....

Giving a frustraited grow, Jason sneaked his wand out of it's pocket and flicked it towards the door. There was a quick flash as he girl fel out as the door hinges semingly gave way, pulling out the reciever on her way down. As entertaining as it was Jason bent down to help the girl back up.

"Oh! Are you alright miss?" Jason helpe her make her way steadily up before faking a sudden lurch and knocking her into the mud. "I'm terribly sorry about all this." Jason spoke concernedly as he "accidentally" stepped on her purse, pushing it's contents underwater. She growled something in answer before storming off.

Why is it always raining when people are in such foul moods? Jsson asked a passerby, who promptly sped up quickly so he wouldn't have to answer the qustion. "Point taken."

Picking up the severed phone chord, Jaosn hung up the phone and quickly repaired it as inconspicously as possible. Dialing 5-2-4-4-2, Jason waited and spoe into the phone after it rna through it's reworked speech, now deailing how many days the Ministry had been Voldemort and Accident free.

"Jason True, I here as a messenger from the American President to be delivered to Minister Avarell personally. So someone might want to give a heads up to anyone on duty in Level Two."

The long trek to the Minister's office gave Layla a moment to draw up specifics in her mind as to what exactly she wanted to be written in this binding contract. She had a feeling that, given Lucian's ego, he would try to get every bit of benefit he could out of this agreement. Of course, she was rather good with words, and with a bit of coercing, the contract would be to her advantage, or on equal footing at the very least.

Taking her place in a chair across from Lucian once they reached their destination, the young witch carefully read each word that was scrawled across the parchment. As he spoke, she nodded, not taking her eye from his demands.

"Alright, Lucian, I think it's my turn." As she spoke, Layla reached out and took the quill from him without response and spun the parchment around with lightning speed. In a flash, her adjustments were made, lines being made through some clauses and others of her own being tacked on to the end. Her handwriting seemed to have a particular flourish, and though it was beautiful, it somehow did not please the eye.

Her hand continued its artistry of words as she again addressed the Minister. "I understand that you have a position open as head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. I have a good friend of mine that I would highly recommend for the job. She would certainly be an asset to our goals." At this last word, Layla withdrew her quill from the contract, dipped it in ink one final time, and forcibly signed her name at the bottom.

"You'll find my corrections to be quite reasonable, I think. I promise, you will not be disappointed with my services. My colleague will be here soon for an interview. I'm also sure you'll find her to be perfect for the job." A small grin with a visibly different motive emerged on her face as she bid farewell to the Minister. "We'll see each other very soon, Lucian. Goodbye."

Pushing herself away from the desk and rising from her chair, Layla stepped out of the room. As she reached the lifts, she withdrew a small piece of parchment from her pocket along with her wand. With a small flick, words quickly spread over the surface, smoldering a bit as they appeared before dying down into a deep black in the same beautifully unpleasant handwriting as had littered the contract along with Lucian's. A charm placed on the parchment would allow delivery of her message, an exact replica showing up on its brother, which was in the possession of her dearest friend.

Reaching the level of the Atrium, Layla stepped out of the lift, her head turning up with a triumphant air. The small grin still graced her face. It was sure to leave a touch of unease in the minds of any who were not in on her plans, and those who she passed seemed to step back at the fear of this mysterious feeling.

As she drew towards the exit, passing the welcome witch's desk, she couldn't help but stop at the mention of a message for the Minister. After all, this was her business now. Layla had never heard of the man named Jason True, but she was quite certain that she did not enjoy the idea of anyone having an audience with the Minister at the moment without her consent.

Stalling for a moment at where she knew the visitor would soon appear through the visitor's entrance, Layla waited patiently for the man (though she was unsure as to whether he would get through or not after having dialed the wrong number for entry). He would not get by her without an inquiry, and he certainly would not be meeting with the Minister without her present.

Apparating down an alley just outside the visitor's entrance to the Ministry, Ms. Miranda Amber Hayden-Smith had come to the Ministry with very important business in mind. Since retiring from the muggle army, Ms. Hayden-Smith had been out of work and using more and more of her already stored wealth. It was a very costly business, pampering yourself, and so Miranda had come to the Ministry to find a way to replenish said funds.

In other words, she wanted a job. And under the Minister, no less.

Entering a toilet cubicle, Miranda stepped inside of the toilet and took out a coin. Miranda had found this coin tossed carelessly aside by some witch (in her purse which she guarded vigorously until she was violently knocked out, somehow), and thus she was able to gain entrance to the Ministry of Magic.

She ignored the wizard at the guard desk asking for wands, as she was obviously not a visitor, having arrived through the employee's entrance. She entered the elevator of the Atrium, and pressed the button that would lead her to the Minister's level. She was goin' a huntin'.

Stormy stepped out of the lift, being pushed to the side by an especially determined looking woman, and proceeded past other employees making their way to and from the central lifts. She was once again captivated by the size and architecture of the Atrium, leaving thoughts of her business completed in the Aurors behind. She nodded her head at the security wizard, though he didn't seem to pay her any mind, and proceeded back toward the visitor's entrance before catching herself suddenly. She chuckled and spun back around facing Taylor. "So, now that we're bonafide Aurors how you gettin' home? Apparate, floo or broom? I think I'll try my hand at apparating, though Paige never did show us where the areas were..."

Without even looking around, she retraced her steps back toward the security desk. Seeing he was busy with other work, she instead focused on a dark haired witch who just seemed to be standing there. "Excuse me, Miss? Stormy Kael. I'm a new Auror here and I was just hoping you could tell me where the apparation areas are?" She hadn't realized she still had yet to take off her visitor's badge when she said her name, but held out her right hand to shake the stranger's.

Taylor's eyes widened a bit as Stormy suddenly started spilling over with questions, she was glad the other woman had so many because it prevented her from having to answer any one of them. Her wide eyes fell into a smile as the lift stop and she got out. She had not tried floo powder recently, because from what she remembered of it you need to say your destination. Apparating was farely easier to do though she enjoyed flying very much. Plus she had not brought her broom with her, actually she would need to go and get a new broom as well as some books. She may actually go to Diagon Alley before returning home for the night.

As Stormy went about Taylor shrugged her shoulders. Stormy had quiet a bit of energy and Taylor was not sure what to make of it. Licking her lips she looked aout the Atrium.

At the sound of the young girl's voice, Layla whipped around to face her, a scowl still plastered on her face. The word Auror, however, piqued her curiosity. This was the new crop, and as a Ministry official, she supposed that she would be seeing more of them.

"Auror, eh?" the witch asked, her eyes scanning the girl with scrutiny. She supposed that she looked capable, but to what extent she couldn't decide. "I was once an Auror, and I was rather good at it, if I do say so myself. My name is Layla Nyx." A cunning smile passed over her, her eyes narrowing and shifting to the girl that Stormy seemed to be with before turning back to her.

"I would expect an Auror to be more observant," she continued, pointing at a man nearby who disappeared an instant later. "You can apparate and disapparate in the Atrium any time you'd like. That is, assuming you know how," Layla taunted slightly, though she retained her grin. She hoped this girl would have a bit of potential for something more than the average Auror.

Stormy's jaw dropped. "Lay-Layla N-Nyx?! THE Layla Nyx? You're a legend! I thought you'd disappeared! Though, I don't suppose anything short of death could stop you from comin' back if you wanted." She completely ignored the slight at her observation, though subconsciously stored the pertinent information to memory. She was too captivated with the witch in front of her to notice even the taunting tone she used. "Have you returned to the Aurors, then? Workin' alongside the great Layla Nyx was what I dreamed about at Hogwarts. It's a great honor to actually meet you!"

After a moments worth of silence, Layla's demeanor cracked into sprawling laughter. "Yes, THE Layla Nyx," she replied through her amusement. She had thought that maybe the girl would have recognized her name, but she certainly hadn't expected this reaction.

"No, I won't be returning to the Aurors, but I do have a new position with the Ministry. I guess in some way we'll be working together. We have to do our best for the benefit of the Wizarding World, don't you agree?" Her smile seemed to change, taking on a very knowing quality.

As she spoke, her hand curled in the air, gesturing gently along with her words. Her hands were graceful and obviously skilled, but there was some sort of unappealing quality to their movement. Very much like her handwriting, it was beautiful, yet somehow sinister.

"And how long have you been an Auror?" Layla asked, rather curious about the path this young girl had chosen.

"Just today, actually. Just got finished with the initial paperwork and a rather annoying training quiz." Her gaze shifted back to the lifts, an annoyed scowl tugging at her lips. With a sigh she reached into her jacket with her left hand, extracted her wand and began twirling it lazily. Eventually her expression brightened once more, the familiar motion triggering pleasant memories, and she returned her focus to Layla. "I suppose it's for the best to get them out of the way now, but it's still tedious. Don't suppose you had to deal with those, not with the Death Eaters running around keeping you on your toes."

"Say,"
she snapped to attention, her eyes shining with sudden inspiration. "You wouldn't mind stopping by Level Two sometime and giving us some tips, would you? Maybe you could even spare a moment to sign my autograph stone?" The last part came a bit shyly, though for Stormy that wasn't very shy at all.

Taylor blinked. Her arms fell into her muggle clothed pockets. Looking at Stormy then at Layla she could not understand the composure of the girl she had been walking with. Biting her lip she wondered if she should just sneak backwards onto the lifts and double check with Paige that she was all set for the day.

As the other two women went off in conversation Taylor thought it was a bit odd Stormy was asking the woman to talk to them when Paige had not even really addressed them as a group. She gave a half bow to the two women and headed back towards the lifts. After one opened she climbed inside and waited to return to the floor where the Auror's were located.

"Those forms really annoyed me, too. It gets far less tedious, though, don't worry." As she spoke, Layla's eyes turned to the other girl who entered the lifts. Nodding her head, she then turned her attention back to Stormy, her smile growing slightly at her final requests.

"I'm sure that I'll be stopping by quite soon to check out the condition that the Aurors are in these days, but at the moment I was waiting on a man who was supposedly entering through the visitors entrance. It seems that he may have been delayed, though. It certainly has been awhile..." she trailed off as she thought.

Without excusing herself from the conversation, Layla stepped over to the security desk. "Excuse me, but would you please notify me, Layla Nyx, if or when this Jason True person reaches the Atrium and hold him up at the security desk for me. I'd like to speak with him before he speaks to the Minister. In the meantime, I'll be on Level Two. Thank you." Layla spoke gently to the Welcome Witch, yet her voice held great authority.

With that matter taken care of, the witch stepped back over to Stormy. "Alright, I'd like to see a little of what you Aurors are doing these days. I do hope everything is going well since I've left," Layla said, stepping towards the lifts and assuming Stormy would follow.
