story from RockSound.net

Back in March we said that The Automatic were "about to be massive" but we didn't realise it was going to happen this quickly. They signed their record deal almost a year to the day before this month's interview took place and yet in that time they've already become one of Britain's biggest new bands.

They should be on the brink of hysteria but when Rock Sound spoke to them for a major cover feature they were as cool as ever. "The weirdest thing about everything that's happened to us this year," says keyboardist Pennie, "is that it hasn't felt weird at all."

Part of the reason for their success has been the huge exposure of their single 'Monster'.

"I remember when we first took that song in to play our management," says vocalist and bass player Rob, "their reaction was totally different to anything we'd played them before. They were like (mimes bad attempt to hide looking impressed) like they were trying to avoid shitting themselves or something!'"

'Monster' might be their big pop tune but there's a part of them, mainly encapsulated by Pennie's manic screaming, that will always be a punk band. Even if they are nervous about having labels pinned on them. . .

"I think the word 'punk' can be taken the wrong way," says Pennie. "People might read it and go 'oh, they think they're punk but they're not DIY and they don't have mohawks and studs on their belts. They don't drive around in a little van.' I'd say we try and perform like a punk band and we love a lot of the things that go along with punk."

"I'd say we're more punk than Blink 182 ever were," says guitarist Frost. "If they call themselves punk we're punk!"
